I didn't hate it because of the rotoscoping. I hated it because of how half-assed the rotoscoping was, the pacing being slow as shit, and that Nakamura was the only interesting character. Even in the manga, Saeki had next to no character until the season wrapped up, and while I won't fault the original source material or the anime for making Kasuga unlikable (since you aren't really supposed to like him anyhow), would it have killed the author to make him a little bit less spineless and dull?

Also, if you're going to employ rotoscoping, get an animations staff full of talented people instead of a Toei Animation-tier studio like Zexcs.

This is one of my favorite shows, it's a really great show about how far you can push the characters, and though the situation isn't normal, it all plays out as if it was happening in reality. Rotoscoping ruined it. How the characters looked is one thing, but the movement never looked right. Having each new frame at an exact regular interval with a low framerate is a cheap and nasty way to do it; if it had a higher framerate or they made a more careful selection of which frames to use, it would have been better. But beyond that, there's lots wrong with it pacing and composition-wise, but I'd have to go watch it again to go into detail there, and fuck that.

Am I supposed to think this looks bad. The face looks perfectly fine, have seen way worse when normal animation has to cut corners. The animation in the wemb is smooth as fuck and there are a lot of subtle movements, and at no point do the characters look weird despite the moe character designs which is a pretty great achievement. They even made sure to animate the shadows so the characters stand less out from the background.
