Lum is mai waifu.

I love it, it is my favorite anime and Lum is my favorite female character in all of anime.
There was a streaming event for it a month ago or so. Well it ended like a month or two ago.

Everything that the writer of Urusei Yatsura shits out is gold. I'm more of a fan of Ranma 1/2, but the first anime I ever saw was a joke-dub of Urusei Yatsura back in the mid 90's called "Lum The Invader Girl" on BBC3. If you've never seen it and you want some fucking top quality laughs, I seriously recommend you go and watch it on YouTube.

I must be the only one who doesn't really find Lum sexy. I think she looks pretty at times, but can't bring myself to think of her as sexy (or obssess over her) like most of the fandom seems to do.

I think a lot of it has to do with how timeless and classic she is. She's like the Audrey Hepburn or Marilyn Monroe of anime/manga. Lum's the one anime girl you could get a tattoo of because she already has that pinup appeal.

I'm really glad this was one of my first anime because I really don't have the patience to watch a 195 episode series now like I did back in the beginning days.

I kinda like Maison Ikoku, but the prolonging of the relationship for 4 years always annoyed me. Like they were both into each other but for some reason it just never happened. I felt like if it cut out maybe 7 volumes of stuff it would have made for a much better series. Seems to be Takahasi's style b/c Inuyasha had alot of the same problems. Should I watch Urusei Yatsura? Will it have those same issues?

It does, sort of. The romance between Ataru and Lum doesn't move forward a whole lot, with the former being the main reason why. Personally, I don't mind it too much because they are still in high school. And, to be honest, they have the emotional maturity of people half their age.

With all that said, Urusei Yatsura also doesn't have a plot. It's an episodic comedy series at it's heart. This, I think, is the real reason why people come back to it so often. That and all the girls being great.

Why don't newer mainstream anime try weird and experimental things like this show did?

I love UY, Ranma, and Maison Ikkoku, but UY is truly something special.

All three manga were already great, but the UY anime is just an absolute gem and a masterpiece.

Also, does anybody have a link to that website full of high quality UY scans and artwork? It was a pretty large collection/database.

Somehow I always fail to save it. It was full of stuff like this.

However, it gets a massive quality jump at about episode 57 or so. In terms of directing, writing and animation. Those start feeling like Mamoru Oshii did them.

Supposedly Rumiko Takahashi really didn't like Beautiful Dreamer because Mamoru Oshii took a lot of creative liberties with it and I think he left after that.

Personally Beautiful Dreamer is my favorite Urusei Yatsura related thing PERIOD. So I'm on Oshii's side with this one.
