Honestly this series is such an anomaly. The story kicks it into high gear after four volumes, whereas many other LNs would usually enter the stagnation period at that point. It has top tier artwork, with an artist that really knows how to make illustrations feel dynamic and really fucking cool unlike many others in the industry. Has a healthy balance of plot and romance. Has an MC with an actual personality and motivation. And yet with all these things going for it it was relatively unpopular, and the anime adaptation that could have boosted it was a half-assed failure whose only redemption were character design and OST.

While I'm happy we managed to get a good conclusion and all rather it being hastily cut short, it frankly boggles my mind how this series ended up getting this many volumes out. I guess the publisher really liked the work or something?

More like having a plot in general helped this series be better.

The other two follow the same formula of "introduce new girl, solve her problem, add to harem, move on".

While with Anti-magic, all the girls were introduced early on, their subplots were mostly resolved, and then the overarching plot took precedence. It actually had a good story that didn't just move onto the next random "MC solves this girl's problems and she falls for him!" shit like other LNs do.

The plot structure definitely helped. The series was about a group of kids accomplishing objectives instead of the overdone tourney being the main premise of the series. Nevermind the fact that they're inept until Ouka steps in and Takeru gets Lapis, the fact that the tournament in the series is just a stage for Haunted's formal introduction is ever so beyond what the other two.

If AMA was written a few years earlier, back when urban-fantasy stuff like Index was the craze, it might have been a bit more popular. I especially appreciate the effort the author at least set up for the magic system. Nothing all that new but the existence of technicality and the likes shows that he somewhat cares.

The novel content is also a bit of letdown if the anime showed anything about it. All that milling around at the start and all Ayato fights is some dude who controls puppets and looks like a complete loser and some less than stellar fights against Kirin, robots, and whatnot. At least AMA's novel-end fights were exciting and thematically, way more grand.

So is there a flashback to Ikaruga and Takeru back in middle school, I just want to see how it was for them since they mention that so much in the series. I always have this picture of them being a pair of sad kids who were stuck together and licked each other's wounds and tried to make things better for each other without understanding things until Ouka beat Takeru and made him understand emotions.

Why both Asterisk and Rakudai thought the whole plot being a fucking tournament would be a good idea? Tournament arcs in manga are good because we already know what the characters are capable of and for the off chance that we might see a fight between the MC and one of his friends. Also both series having minor to no differences in powers made it lame as fuck. Some of the fights in Rakuda were cool as fuck but the characters leave next to no impression. On the other hand I struggle to remember any fight in Asterisk. Even then Antimagic outperformed both. Ouka vs Mari, Takeru vs Orochi, Onii-sama vs Haunted, heck any fight between important characters ends up being amazing.

I'm glad Antimagic is ending in such a high note. Sure, the god thing was cliched as fuck but the road to it was a wild ride. The other two bored me to death.
