She probably didn't tie them that tightly and they came undone. Some people think she's resentful because she reminds her of her overbearing mother, but I think it's because Kaori hasn't been a true friend to her. Her whole deal is to win over Asuka's mother so she can play with them again, not actually be concerned with how Asuka feels.

Asuka's a wounded animal. She keeps her friends at bay and wears a smile, but she also resents them for staying away. That's why she invites Kumiko over - she sees right through her and won't shy away. She can let her guard down around her because she knows she's genuine - she went to bat for Nozomi even when Asuka bared her claws and told her to fuck off.

The best explanation I've seen is that the scene shows Kaori isn't really Asuka's friend and just doing mindless nice things because that's how she is. In the previous scene Asuka was saying that she has giant feet and her shoes barely fit, and the implication is that Kaori doesn't know that and ties them uncomfortably tight (though honestly after rewatching it that's partly speculation, this is the furthest she goes with it).

The main problem with this (and that I have with the entire episode) is that it's been emphasized that Asuka is extremely reluctant to talk about herself even with her "friends" that are desperate to get her to talk. In this episode for almost no reason she just decides to open up to Kumiko despite having been equally reluctant up until this point.

I wouldn't go that far. They're seen hanging out together in their free time in a number of episodes. People are complicated and their motivations, interactions, and dynamics aren't usually straightforward.

Kaori is pretty hands off. Remember, she tried to get Kumiko to deliver the goods for her, but she's obviously close enough to Asuka to know her mother's tastes. She's probably giving Asuka her space out of respect or fear, and Asuka probably resents her for it, even if she's the one keeping them at arm's length.

When you're depressed you want to push everyone away, but you desperately want a friend. It's that contradictory nonsense that gnaws at you, but like I said, people are complex.

Asuka is annoying and has had too much screen time.

My take on the scene with Asuka and Kaori

1st way of looking at it is the way most people have seen it, kaori is a mother figure and asuka doesn't like that

But I think it goes a little deeper than that personally... Not only Kaori but alot of the "friends" that Asuka have put her on this huge pedestal. They are always seeking for her approval and we see this with Kaori and buchou. So I believe the scene symbolized that Kaori isn't really a friend to Asuka, it's more of a master/servant type of relationship, Kaori won't let Asuka tie her own shoes because she's too "great" to bend down and do it herself.

Which is why we get that reaction from Asuka, she is a person not this amazing perfect being, she worked hard to be good at stuff, which becomes even more clear when Asuka says she worked ridiculously hard to keep her grades up so she can keep doing what she loves. She invites Kumiko because Kumiko treats her like another person, she doesn't treat her as a perfect girl and puts her up on a pedestal, she can actually have a genuine conversation with someone.

I think Asuka desperately wants control over the decisions over her life, so that she can at least have influence over the desired outcome. The show has been hammering home the fact that she is suffocating from the tight leash held by her mother, and it has led her to prioritize maintaining control over every remaining aspect of her life that's still hers. Yet every time the outcome has been negative due to unwanted interference due to selfish reasons from her mother, and due to this she resents unsolicited interactions that she does not want.

In this arc, her situation with the club leads her to decide to reach out to Kumiko for help; once again, on her own clearly stated terms, because she wants it, and she has confidence enough in Kumiko's respect of her autonomy. Kaori butts in for her own selfish reason without her approval or knowledge and with the shoelace tying shits on her autonomy and intrudes upon her personal space. Considering what we know about Asuka it'd be impossible for her not to get pissed off about it.

The 'theory' that Kumiko is intentionally given warm/earthy colors in contrast to Reina and Mamiko's cooler, blue-ish ones.

Seems like it's to show that being Earth, she needs to have a Water to achieve harmony with herself, that's why it is shown that she wants to learn music, from when her sister is at her best during that school performance. Then all those hypocritical bad choices meant her sister is no longer special to Kumiko, that's why she always geh at and becomes separate from her.

Later another Water appeared, appearing all special and gifted much like her sister, that's why Kumiko looks up to Reina after that hill episode and started practicing more seriously.
