マンガスレ/Raw Manga Thread

This thread is for the discussion of raw Japanese manga.

What are you playing? What are you looking forward to? What have you finished? You know the drill.

Yeah, I've heard it before, but I mean, wouldn't 神のみ知る mean the same thing?
>>
>>150380390
All it does it make it sound more pretentious, which fits Keima's character.
>>
>>150382566
Remember in Shinto there are traditionally lots of gods, so if you said that it would be the world any old god knows. He wants to specify the one true God, that is, of course, Keima.

You mean the translator not understanding what he read and just making shit up?
>>
>>150400173
It doesn't really have much to do with perspective. The translator clearly had no idea what アルキメデスの原理 was, and decided not to google it and just made something up that he felt made sense. It's a flat out mistranslation.

It is entirely to do with perspective, which is being confused to the lack of understanding of the reference.

What's this I hear about DJT getting axed? I literally haven't even noticed. Was it during that weird rule sticky bullshit? I avoided that like the plague.

Anyway, I gave up my rune grind four years ago after three months, so I'm not exposed to raw manga very often, but a friend of mine became absolutely obsessed with Sora no Manimani and was begging me to get him the raws since translations died at like volume 4/10. I read the remaining six out of curiosity, though I could only really recognize hiragana and sort of guess what was going on. It wasn't bad.

>>
>>150400452
Why was it even brought up in the first place?
>>
>>150400340

>>
>>150400678
I haven't done a scientific test on it so I can't say that for sure. Manhua always puts me off because there's something off about the art and their stories tend to be really melodramatic. Not like manga can't be like that but I've never read a manhua that I liked.
>>
>>150400571
>>150400732
Aside from the bottom right and bottom second from the left panels, it is fine. Looks like the translator confused カヌレ with canopy or something (I assume), thus throwing off the second panel from the left. Unfortunate, guess it goes to show the power of how a single important word can change the entire context something.
>>
>>150401014
>Aside from the bottom right and bottom second from the left panels, it is fine.
The bottom panel is entirely wrong. It's not the only mistake in the translation this guy did either. The whole thing is full of mistranslations and broken English. I think the guy behind it didn't fully speak English or Japanese.

Start practising whenever for fun but a good time to really expend your efforts into translation, if you want to take it seriously, is with say at least the ability to pass N1 with high scores, or the JCAT equivalent, on top of having read at least a dozen full length Japanese novels and a few hundred volumes of manga.
This is worth reading for a bit of an insight, extracting what relevant information is present:
https://shinpaideshou.wordpress.com/2012/05/23/the-realities-and-benefits-of-translation-as-a-full-time-job-an-introduction/

Let's discuss why vocab-based learning methods such as Core are superior to kanji-based methods like RTK for the purposes of reading raw manga.

Vocab means you learn the words you need to be reading manga right away - you can literally learn a few hundred words in an easy manga like Yotsuba and then read it. With kanji, you have to learn the kanji first and then the vocab, inserting an extra step before you can start reading. And of course you want to be reading as soon as possible for maximum engagement while learning.
>>
>>150430872
What "doesn't interest you" in manga? Perhaps from there I could give you recommendations.

>>150431181
That's quite a lot. May I ask about your experience regarding the language? What made you progress the most and after how many titles/volumes did you realize you had become "pro-efficient", or perhaps "advanced"...?
>>
>>150431645
No.
>>
>>150431645
I think both are important. Especially doing some sort of Kanji study to clear the fog regarding what kanji are and how they're made up (radicals, etc...).

I also don't especially like pre-made decks like core. True they're needed at first because diving into reading without anything to back it up is incredibly frustrating, but after a while one should definitely start mining his own words from the contexts they've encountered them. That way the brain has more stuff it can associate the word with which makes remembering it much easier. Also worth mentioning definitions from core and such aren't on par with rikai in my opinion.

This is coming from someone who did both RTK and core10k.
>>
>>150431772
Yeah, for the sake of reading manga i think that's a great idea, also there are very good tools to import from manga and straight into anki cards. So there's no reason not to get started in reading after you've learned enough to get by.
>>
>>150431672
>What "doesn't interest you" in manga?

I just prefer anime to manga, and I don't want to read popular manga because when it eventually gets an anime I'll already know what it is going to happen and that ruins it. There have been series where I watched the anime first and then wanted to read the manga, but the art style is always worse in the manga.

Also, I find reading manga on the computer is irritating because of having to zoom and scroll a lot, especially with raws. If I had a big tablet or a portrait-mode monitor that might solve most of the problems.

Maybe "doesn't interest" was the wrong thing to say, because I'm sure there are hundreds of good stories, but I think I just don't like the manga format. Why am I hanging out in a raw manga thread? I have no idea.

>>
>>150432238
Personally, I find that I enjoy certain things in an anime and other things in manga.
In anime, I tend to focus a lot more on atmosphere and voice acting and often not pay attention to the dialogue at all, but when I'm reading, the way its worded has to be really interesting and fast paced. I love word plays and puns and banter when it comes to reading. Also some things are just better to look at when its a highly detailed manga, such as supernatural stuff in my opinion.
>>
>>150432346
It was for Claymore and Glass no Kamen, which are two I remember wanting to read the manga. I meant for the ones that I've compared, I'm sure there are some that are different.
>>
>>150432238
Why don't you just do it the other way around and read the manga first, then follow it up with the anime as a reward/"upgrade"?

You don't have to read the whole thing in one go either; just read the chapters associated with one episode, then watch that episode, etc.

I can't say how common this is, but some anime/manga pairs really correspond almost 1:1 in terms of dialogue and pacing. For example, I'm reading Nisekoi right now, and episode 1 of the anime was almost identical to chapter 1 in the manga (~ 60 pages), episode 2 corresponded to the next 3 chapters (~ 3 * 20 pages), and so on.
>>
>>150432718
Not him but for having tried to do anime + manga at the same time it was just meh.

It's better to do one or the other and then, like one year later or something, watch or read the other left. To each their own though.
>>
>>150431772
I don't agree that kanji study is important, because I never did anything like RTK and was fine. So if I had taken the time to do it, I still would've had to learn vocab and thus started reading later. Clearly an inferior path.

Core and Rikai both use the same dictionary you know, jdict. But yeah mining decks are definitely superior to Core once you've got the very basics down.
>>
>>150432896
Good for you, but it's very common for people to express having a lot of difficulties regarding kanji.

>Core and Rikai both use the same dictionary you know
I know, but core often just puts 1 definition, this is what I meant.

But it's not like RTK is the only way to overcome those difficulties, if you read more and get exposed to those kanji more, you'll get used to them. The difference is reading helps other skills as well, while RTK only benefits that one specific area and neglects the others.
Sure, you can do both, but the time wasted on RTK is still time not spent reading.

Sorry for the super late reply, I had to take care of something.

>May I ask about your experience regarding the language?
I took it in high school because I have some JP heritage but had no knowledge of the language at the time. I think it was probably the equivalent of a term or two of college-level Japanese. Then I lived for a year in Japan (on working holiday, in tourist-facing retail). Then I read books and looked stuff up when I didn't understand something.

>What made you progress the most
Giving up on understanding every single word.

>and after how many titles/volumes did you realize you had become "pro-efficient", or perhaps "advanced"...?
I wouldn't say that I'm advanced, most of the stuff I read is rather lightweight. I've just read a lot of it over time. My progress was pretty slow and steady with manga, so I didn't really have any moments like that. I got more significant and noticeable jumps when I started reading light novels.
