Psycho Pass was fun, even if it went a bit too far up its own arse near the end and didn't reach the full potential of its concept.

The Dominator was one of the best parts of the show though. Everything about it was intertwined with the plot and made sense in the universe (even the gore explosions), while being aesthetic as fuck.

Strength isn't nearly as important with swords as people think. Swords are not for hacking. They are for cutting.
>>
>>150369043
Right, but the reach of your weapon is one of the most important factors, and merely holding off an attacker wielding a sword with just a dagger would be nigh impossible.
>>
>>150368646
The only acceptable response to this thread.
>>
>>150368524
The advantage of the dagger over the buckler is that you can stab the guy with a dagger.
That's useful when you manage to bind the enemy's weapon with your main weapon, but also in a case that is far too overlooked in fiction:
When you have stabbed the enemy and then your weapon is stuck and the enemy isn't dead yet. Rapiers in particular are easy to sink into human bodies, so it wasn't rare that somebody would get impaled all the way to the guard. At that range your rapier is completely useless even if it isn't stuck in some French bastard. And that's where you finish the job with your dagger.
>>
>>150369078
It's difficult, but there were treaties written on this precise premise. They recommend putting the dagger blade against your forearm in order to be able to parry blows with it while closing in.
>>
>>150369078
The whole point (pun unintended but welcome) of dagger vs sword is NOT holding them off, is agressively entering close and personal. Basically, you aim to sidestep / dodge / evade an attack, then inmediately enter close enough that the extra range is actually a disadvantage. Of course the rival tries to prevent you from doing that.

There were literally bulletproof shields that were used in the late middle ages.
I heard about gun-shields that were used in naval warfare. Basically extra-sturdy tower-shields with a rifle attached to them.

>Shield were large, unwieldy and had mostly went out of use centuries before rapiers were even a thing.
Except nothing of that is true. The rapier was born in the late XV century, and the shield was still in use for all that century (and even in the XVI - ask the Spanish Tercios about it). Also not ALL shields were large, and the only unwieldy shiwelds are the body shield ones that do NOT need to be "wielded". The most common kind of shield from the XIII century onwards (excluding specialized pavises and things like that) was actually quite light in weight

By the end of 15th century, shield were a rare sight, while rapiers really became a thing towards the rear end of the 16th century.
I'm not saying shields went out of use completely, pavises being the obvious example, being used as a stationary cover for archers.

This is a pointless discussion anyway because rapiers were never battlefield weapons, and even when shields were common they wouldn't have been carried in the daily context were a rapier would've been carried.

Earlier swords resembling rapiers did exist earlier in the 16th century, although its development into what we would call a rapier today and it's popularity came towards the end of the 16th century.

Shields will forever be able to parry and deflect attacks than any sword/dagger would. The funny thing is that while retards think more weapons will give you "more attack" or more avenues of attacking someone, you can be far more aggressive in attacking if you had a shield since you have the insurance of being able to ward off attacks better. Bucklers were small and barely covered anything and full size shields were not even much heavier than them.

Shield in offhand > Buckler in offhand or Holding single weapon in both hands (debatable) > Retarded dual wielding

If you actually tried doing something like that and know how much of an advantage the range is, you'd know that unless the person you're up against is retarded or has never seen a sword in his entire life, you'd have a better chance turning around and running. There is a reason why throughout the history of warfare people were continuously developing ways to get further from what they were trying to kill.

That's true, but you don't really need a shield if you wear a full plate harness on every part of your body. That's why they can wield poleaxes without worry. By the late 15th century, even a somewhat well-off men-at-arms could afford one, albeit in poorer quality than the nobles.

The issue with preferring daggers/bucklers over shields is not limited to weight, but also context and convenience. In civil life you don't want to carry shields everywhere, while eating or while meeting a very important person, if you're not a guard or something. Meanwhile, you can conceal carry a dagger in addition to your already openly-carried smallsword/rapier. Daggers used as a parrying or riposte weapon just came out naturally within that context of civil everyday life.

I don't really know if shields really fell out of fashion in the battlefield though, centuries before rapiers even a thing, like he said.

Well yeah, that I definitely agree with. Hell it's not just shields, most if not all battlefield weapons were very unwieldy and impractical to carry around in daily life. I might be wrong but I don't think people carried around bucklers either though, I'm pretty sure they were mostly a dueling thing.

That's the funny part

Underneath plate Armour, which was designed to defend against cutting and stabbing blows, knights wore mail and leather. So assuming a katana managed to cut through this plate armour (It most likely wouldn't, some TV show showing a katana cut through some shitty cheap cuirass isn't very accurate) the mail and leather would provide more than adequate protection due to the nature of a Katana as a Cutting weapon. Also lessened mobility is a meme, armourers went to great pains to design armour that protected the wearer but also allowed them the ability to move.

The Katana wouldn't be been very useful if plate armour was commonly used in japan, but because Europe has much more iron than Japan, that doesn't happen.

No, they wore gambeson underneath the plate. Mail went into the areas where the plate was insufficient. But most areas of the body had multiple layers of plate and no mail underneath.

Right. But the better the plate got, the less mail was used. Because mail doesn't really add a whole lot to plate.
You can't cut through plate, and mail doesn't protect against bashing.
>>
>>150372854
Mostly correct although knights did not wear leather but they wore gambesons which were many layers of hard cloth. Gambesons just by themselves provided a lot of protection and peasants who couldn't afford anything better often went to battle just in gambesons and helmets.

Plate armor itself wouldn't have been just hard but literally impossible to penetrate with a katana, or even a western made sword. You'd have to go through the gaps to have any chance. Even a full blown horseback lance blow could glance off if the blow wasn't head on.
There's a reason blunt weapons became popular.

>I might be wrong but I don't think people carried around bucklers either though
I only knew that people talked about it being a dueling and a battlefield equipment, as on the battlefield it might be preferred by archers or pikemen who wouldn't bother themselves to carry shields on their backs while marching, etc. There were also smaller shields. People tend to think that shields are always the big-ass kite ones, the tower shield, or pavises, when smaller ones existed.

However, the fact that it was used as a dueling equipment in an unarmored context, different than armored one which used shields, swords, polearms, etc. (even all at ones), might imply otherwise. Why would swordmasters include sword-and-buckler instructions too in their manuals then, if it wasn't for civilian self-defense?
>>
>>150373025

I think it depends on the period, Most Armour i've seen/read up upon is around the Norman conquest, so I accept that I could be wrong.
>>
>>150373116
Mostly a myth.
To puncture through plate, the crossbow has to be pretty big, the plate has to be very close, and the bolt has to hit at a good angle.

I don't think they would be able to penetrate the really good armor at all, except maybe in its weak spots.

Knights almost always wore a full mail shirt and coif. The shirt usually went down to the thighs. Some extended right to the wrists while some were short sleeved.
Anything above the waist was usually covered with plate, a layer of mail and gambeson. In fact it wouldn't have been uncommon for the neck to be protected by multiple layers of mail and padding due to the aventail. Later the neck would be protected by an additional plate, aka the bevor.

The coif is another matter entirely. Taking off your helmet (or at least raising the visor) was a necessity in battle at times. You didn't want to be unprotected during those times.
But as I said, in general mail was where the plate was insufficient. They had special mail sleeves for people whose torso was already well protected by plate, but whose arms needed additional cover.
Mail is heavy. You don't weigh yourself down needlessly if you don't have to. Not just that, but given mail's non-rigid nature, it's going to weigh you down at the wrong place, your shoulders. You don't want that if you don't need it.

It's not like swords were particularly useful anyway. Armoured combat disqualifies most swords because plate deflects just about everything that doesn't carry enough force to smash bones, which is why in just about every culture swords were just sidearms while polearms and maces took the main stage.

Katanas were sidearms, taking a back seat to spears and bows and only really so much popularity due to being a status symbol and main duel weapon in peacetime.

All swords are bad at cutting armored opponents, not only katana. Never did I say that Europe didn't abandon cutting and emphasized thrusting as time went on. Besides, what you said has nothing to do with armors, because they abandoned them too gradually, until standard uniform army happened. Only like dragooners or something that still wore cuirasses. They chose 1796 pattern cavalry swords over basket-hilted backswords or broadswords. 1908 pattern was made exclusively for cavalry thrust, and very unwieldy as an infantry sword, so it's useless to generalize it to any kinds of situation involving cut or thrust debates. Furthermore, it wasn't about armor at all, because nobody wore it anymore, except for some early bulletproof vests (which were useless against anything other than pistol rounds anyway). Slashing opponents were less risky because if you thrust them you might lose your sword stuck inside your opponent while on high speed. There were basic techniques to avoid that situation, but it remained riskier and harder than cutting. People always bitched whenever they changed the design towards more cut-centric or thrust-centric. People always bitch anyway. Not to mention differences of army tradition between each countries.

It's all about usages and contexts, really. The same with katana. Although, I'm not sure why the Japanese still brought them during WW2, whether it's useful or not, etc.

Curiously, on /his/ (and maybe elsewhere) there seems to be some butthurt reactions towards Matt Easton, because everyone seems to take for granted that his opinions are the authoritative ones. He might throw some opinions, but most of them are so believable that it's hard to argue against him. It's not like Metatron who always presents safe consensuses, experiences, or facts. Matt often speculate and spout opinions, the most apparent being his movie fight scene reviews. That, or he's a skilled salesman or something.

But then again, it's mostly because of him that I'm fucking crazy about 19th century swords now. I actually prefer straight patterns more, by the way. Don't know why I don't bother with earlier century basket-hilted backswords instead, because honestly they are the same shit.

Shit is getting off-topic now. As expected.

Short answer is, it's complicated.
Longer answer, they're excellent cutters and great at what they were made to do, just not the magical end-all, be-all of swords that Japan likes to portray them as.
They're strong, but not invincible. They will cut flesh and soft armor, but won't cut armor made out of metal. They can pierce metal armor, sure, with a good stab, but you can get a better stab with a spear.
Oh, and before anyone throws around terms like "pig iron," that's misleading. Japan did have shitty pig iron, but that's why they used the smithing techniques that they did, including the folding. That knocked impurities out and in the end, they were left with great quality steel.
Not quite as good crucible steel that the middle east developed and the Vikings used for the famous Ulfberht swords.
They're making the katana from Kill Bill, but this is a nice little video that gives a decent rundown of how katanas are made from scratch using traditional methods.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNuEDtnVdeM
Here's a good documentary about the Ulfberht sword that also covers a bit about the metallurgy of medieval blades. Not much on katanas, but I still recommend it if you have an hour to kill

The hammer being higher up is to allow you to manually cock the thing. The firing pin would still be lower on the hammer and strike the correct chamber.
Here's a real revolver that fires from the bottom cylinder.
See how its hammer still comes up to allow the finger to set it?

The main problem you'll have with them as a weapon is that they are a two-handed weapon (by grip and by weight) with the blade length of a one handed weapon. Against somebody with a European sword you'll either have a reach problem or be fucked because he can use a shield while holding a weapon as long as yours.

The archer needs serious muscle training. But ask /fit/. You don't need decades to build up bulk.

Training to hit individual targets is a different matter. But you can get satisfactory results within weeks/months of training.

The thing that katana apologist like to ignore is that modern depictions of Katanas are based on those made hundreds of years later than Viking swords, and absolutely could not stand up to any of the contemporary weaponry available throughout Eurasia.
Had Japan elected to drop it's policy of isolationism any earlier than it was forced to, the country would have been destroyed by foreigners with far more advanced technology and larger populations.

Medieval steel was pretty shit until the industrial revolution.
There was no magical "Toledo steel" that some people believe in.
If it wasn't crucible steel, it was shit.
Japs learned their folding from the Koreans anyway. That did get the best result short of firing the steel in a crucible.
Europe did move on from its medieval period by the time Japs got to their own equivalent circa 1400. Just in time for the Sengoku Jidai. And the Japs did open themselves up to European traders for weapons that went beyond swords: guns.
Then closed themselves off again after the Tokugawas secured the shogunate and decided they didn't need any filthy, dishonoroburu roundeye's superior technology.

Sybil controls the populace and keeps them at a very low level of stress by taking away any concept of personal control. The investigators do not decide to kill criminals, Sybil decides. This detachment from the killing process allows investigators to kill what we would consider innocent people without raising their stress level (they aren't killing anyone, Sybil is) and the dominator gun plays into this. It is ludicrously powerful for what it is used for, and is designed so that there is no chance of the target surviving a single shot, further enforcing the concept that Sybil is a perfect system that makes no mistakes. If someone is to die, they die, no wounding shots, no mistakes. Sybil says you die, and you die, Sybil says you live and you live.

To arm investigators or enforcers with less powerful guns would allow a crack in Sybils system of control. For example, an investigator could choose to shoot a suspect in the knee to wound them instead of going for a kill-shot, overriding Sybil's judgement and undermining the system that the population has surrendered control to.

(Yes I know one of the criminals survived for a few minutes after getting his arm blown off - he was still guaranteed to die and this typically doesn't happen)
