Not gonna lie, that flashback scene was really good. Throughout the series, Tamako's dad is presented as an old, serious bitter man who only thinks about the mochi store. Then, we are shown how much of a romantic and idiot he was in his high school years.

I would probably rate Slam Dunk as slightly above average rather than average, but my point still stands.

The execution of this entire episode was just extremely great in every aspect. The directorial style of it reminded me a lot of Osamu Dezaki- I mean the rest of the show had some small Dezaki-isms as well, but episode 59 in particular seemed to borrow from his style.

Well you either watch it for nostalgia or you don't watch it at all. One of those shows that really left an impression on me as a kid, and with a new sequel OVA coming out felt like re-watching it not too long ago.

Despite the 90's goofiness and general ridiculousness it deals with quite some heavy and philosophical themes which is cool.

Episode 8 was good too. Not as good as 15 but it was my second favorite episode of the show.

DxD's S1 finale and S2 finale were so far beyond anything else in the series. It was a really awful series to watch too.

The problem is I watched SMJ first. And I loved it. Then the first half of J to X turns into a show aimed at children. And not the good kind like CardCaptor Sakura. Just a episodic show about taking care of a baby. It was an insult to what SMJ tried to do.

Not really, maybe you watched it too long ago and remember very little? I say that because as I mentioned, the entire thing has that 90's goofiness and over the top-ness all the way through, the first season also has a first half that is very episodic and extremely retarded.

There's one episode where they have a 'Marionette' contest with Faust's 3 bitches, they have a cooking contest, ice skating competition and something else equally retarded.

It's always the second halves of both seasons that pick up on the actual seriousness of the story.

Slam Dunk just barely hit the point of being "passable", I don't want to hear any bullshit about it being an amazing classic therefore it cant be posted in this thread.
The pacing is slow as shit as a result of being intentionally stretched out with flashbacks, expositions and long shots of literally nothing happening, the animation is terrible (Especially during its first quarter), the writing and direction has no respect for subtlety (Flashbacks and exposition employed every 5 seconds to fucking hammer in the point), and most of the main cast is underdeveloped and overlooked by the end (And that's not to mention its shitty inconclusive ending).

Slam Dunk is only a "legit good classic show" if you're 10 and haven't seen anything else. Ashita no Joe is a legitimately amazing classic, Hajime no Ippo is a great classic (Excluding the sequels), Ace wo Nerae is a very good one, Touch is also a good classic. Slam Dunk just dumbs itself down too much though unlike all of the previously mentioned anime.
Slam Dunk deserves credit for being what established a lot of modern sports shounen and it's one of the absolute best selling anime/manga of all time, but i'm not going to refer back to it if I want to show an example of a well written or well produced show. Its strengths only barely make up for its many, many weaknesses so for that it's only "slightly above average" in my book.

Ashita no Joe is a legitimately overrated turd, not even memeing right now. I wasn't really expecting much from it but god damn if it isn't the most overrated shit hyped around /a/. The one thing I will give you without any argument is that the boxing makes no sense, more so in the first season than in the second. But the series mainly focuses itself on being a character drama more than it does as a sports series given that 85% of the show takes place outside of the ring, much of that dealing with things unrelated to boxing.
Joe being an anti-social brat at the start is part of the point -- and that's also what his character development focuses on curbing, that's not a criticism of the show.
The last thing you said is just objectively false though. The only ones who treat him like a god are the kids in Namidabashi that respect him because they obviously see him as cool (Who wouldn't? He teaches them how to properly steal and gives them free shit). The show implies pretty heavily Danpei is just using him at the beginning, and Nishi only respects and hangs out with him in prison because Joe is kind of the only thing stopping him from getting beaten up by every other inmate there. But literally everyone else in the show hates Joe, especially in the beginning. The authority hates him, the poor at Namidabashi remark on him as being a loudmouth, hyperactive brat, all of the Juvie inmates hate him and try to kill him, and the boxing commentators and other boxers are not at all shy at showing their distaste for his shitty brawling boxing style and arrogance. Eventually in Ashita no Joe 2 people like him more because, lo and behold he doesn't have nearly as shitty an attitude. But even then his over excitability and generally being a giant autist gets people hating him, like Jose Mendoza who at first calls Joe a "Yellow Sheep" and all of the Hawaiian fans who call him a yellow bastard after his stunt during the Sarawak fight.
