I don't understand how this series is even popular here? The animation style makes it unwatchable for me. In my personal opinion they went a little overboard on the sharp edges and goth style of the series and I'm pretty sure if Nightmare Before Christmas had an anime counterpart this would be it.

Lelouch had his heart in the right place, but even he wasn't completely for what most people wanted (See his talk with Kallen in R1, about how the Japanese might be better off being under Brit rule)

The guy ain't perfect, and tends to think in a really binary win/loss manner (Since he believes the only way to succeed with his goals+get vengeance for his moms murder was to destroy Britannia, while Suzaku was wanting the more reasnable 'why don't we just fix the system and not kill people'?)

However, with his mother dealt with, and Nunnaly now in charge, his motivations may change.

The difficulty with R3, is probably trying to find a good, reasonable antagonist this time around. With Nunnaly in charge, it'd be hard to retread him as Zero unless something happened to fuck up Nunally

I wouldn't say the authors 'fucked up' with Euphie. It's a shame what happened to her, yeah, but, it's a fictional story. That whole fuck up on Lulu's part was to highlight how dangerous frivolous talk and use of his power can screw him over.

He fought the good fight, but his worst enemy was himself and his binary win/lose way of thinking. You know, how he saw the BK's as pieces of Chess, rather than people who are unpredictable. It's sort of one of his great failings - Despite all the miracles, he doesn't foster trust much, he pushes people to the side, he's rather aloof, and seems rather uncaring to the people he works with.

If he trusted the BK's a bit more, if he was willing to risk everything by revealing bits about himself to a trusted few, he could have easily had a few trusted people take care of Nunally, and thus she wouldn;t be kidnapped in the end sequence of R1. Thus he wouldn't abandon the BK's over what could have been seen as trivial reasons when they needed him most.

His tactical and brilliant mind juxtaposed with his resoundingly cold and stupid/aloof decisions is what makes him compelling

It doesn't change anything. I would have been fine with them ending the show with Lelouch being legitimately dead forever, but the way they did it him being alive is the only thing that makes sense.
