Last few episodes were filler and have nothing to do with the series. Also at that time the director (Anno) stopped working on it. It shows. The constant recaps each episode and 2 whole episodes of recap shows they had big budget problems... Creative ye? They were copy pasting manga panels on screen and showing power point frames. Well, its kinda creative for the budget they were working with, but its still shit.

Does it matter? Not really.
Did Tsurumaki do a good job on the episodes he directed? Yes.

Is the show better for it rather than being a straightforward adaptation? Unquestionably.

I'd take budget and other problems behind the scenes any day if they result in things like paper cutouts, burning the cels onscreen, and the manga style that would later be used in FLCL.

Dude, the manga is generic as fuck shoujo with way too much drama and shallow characters.

What Anno did was transform this petty idea into a superb story about self definition. The whole point is about discovering oneself and finding your niche in the world, while developing friendships, love, and life skills.

The comedy is top tier while always conserving enough seriousness to evoke emotions and nostalgia. And even the later eps where they stop giving a fuck are great.

It's a pitty we'll never get anythign clcose to a 2nd season, specially because reading the manga to know the rest of the story is just not on the same level.

And then everybody gets pregnatn before age 20 and it's just sad.

It's an amazing anime despite the production issues. It's more of the mangaka's fault than Anno's fault.

The main guy was kinda of an edgelord, but the background characters were pretty cool.

My favorite are the short girl that falls in love with her new step brother. The sisters of the main girl were pretty cool too. And the dude that literally helps raise his best friends daughter just so he can fuck her is one of the most sensible characters in the series.

Tried watching the first few episodes and read the first few chapters of the manga afterwards. It felt like the typical shoujo stuff and I didn't like the fact that like 20% of each episode was taken up by recaps/previews.

I gave this a 10/10 even though the production was soo bad, goes to show production doesnt mean much when the story so good.

It was made during time when Japan had big economy problem so budget was trash.

I read the manga back in the day, good classic shôjo stuff, not as iconic as marmalade boy but fun on its own right, albeit very monotonous when it comes to the male MC, I know it's just a shôjo but goddamn arima is an edgy faggot, if it wasn't for his dad he would be absolutely unbearable at the end.

That said, how's the anime?, I'm more than willing to give it a go, as long as it's fun.

The anime is miles better than the manga. Gainax and Anno really tried to do something else rather than just a simple shoujo adaptation.

It focuses mroe on characters and the self image. The edgyness get over the top at times but it has a nice contrast with some great comedy. I highly recommend it.

I read the manga after watching the anime and, I don't know, it wasn't bad but it just wasn't the same. The anime took the same events but greatly enhancing them with a more psychological approach to it, to the point of introspective narrative like the last 2 episodes of Eva. The manga was romance shoujo while the anime was more like psychological drama in a romance shoujo setting. There are a couple of pretty shitty episodes towards the end that are unrelated to the main story and add nothing, but it was when production was shitting the bed, so it's to be expected I guess. Despite what some people might say, watch all the episodes and judge by yourself.

I didn't like the conclusion of the manga either. I felt it was pretty dumb and pointless. Instead, in the anime we get no conclusion at all. Fuck yes.
