Easily the best show of last year, in my eyes. Really enjoyed it. Even when everything's working against him, Ikuhara is still so fucking great.

Both Penguindrum and YKA were fights to get made, and how could studio possibly not matter when you consider the production issues with them? Penguindrum collapsed in its middle episodes, YKA was barely corrected, and both seem to have been cut down in length. Utena was a fluke, only possible because his team was pre-assembled and it was made in Eva's wake.

Oh, of course I didn't mean stylistically either, unless you consider crappy production a style. I don't have a source because there isn't one, only my own speculation based on the length of time they were in planning for vs. their episode count and the content feeling cramped and too tightly constrained. Could be he's lost his touch, but like I said, really seems to me that he had to make compromises to put his ideas out there.

I mean, there were already many contrivance to keep the plot going as it was, I can't imagine it being 25 episodes unless a bunch of new material was introduced. The only parts that felt rushed were Ginko's and director's backstories.

Not rushed - cramped. Very little breathing room if you compare it to his past works, Utena especially. I think Ikuhara's an ambitious guy with a ton of ideas, here crammed into a small time frame. I'd put money on him having wanted at least another cour to do his thing. I'd be extremely surprised if it were planned from the outset as 12 episodes.

Utena changed mine as well. I watched it when I was younger and really enjoyed it but I didn't know why. I didn't understand what the show was getting at for a lot of its runtime. It caused me to sit back and think about what I like about media since I mostly thought about things in terms of how a Youtube reviewer would talk about something because I was an idiot who couldn't think for himself, and none of that was applicable to Utena. I also started to think harder about what I watched. I rewatched it a year later and it blew me away.

It was a mess.
The premise was great, the visuals were nice and the VA choices were perfect - especially Aoi Yuuki as Mitsuko.

However, the relationship between Ginko and Kureha felt very forced. The whole thing pretty much relied on a past event, even though during the present Kureha had strong feelings for Sumika.

The show goes on and Ginko is shown as not really a good person, especially by allowing Sumika to get eaten, completely out of jealousy. And yet, despite all the ugly things she did, Kureha forgave her and returned her love.
Hell, Kureha started as "remove bears" (since they ate her mum and her lover) but then she became completely wet over Ginko, simply because she recalled her past; like, in a single scene she made a 180, character-wise.

Kureha's feelings for Sumika were far too strong that they undermined the relationship she was supposed to have with Ginko, as in, you're never given a single reason why her relationship with Ginko is supposed to be more special (being the main couple and all), or even Kureha properly moving on from Sumika. Even the image of Kumaria ended up being Sumika's - i.e. the idea of love for her was Sumika.

I also don't think the show every properly addressed what the Invisible Storm was supposed to be. At first it simply seemed anti-gay sentiment, later it seemed the need for gay people to keep the status quo (i.e. purge the gay people who are being open about their feelings, so that they can enjoy their things in secret), but then even the bears got involved in this.

Another thing that had no particular meaning attached to it was the Court of Severance. Who were they, and why they could grant wishes such as turning bears into humans was never explained - though, things like this one aren't uncommon on Ikuhara's works.

To be honest, I can overlook nearly anything, but Ginko and Kureha's relationship. That should have been developed properly and they should have avoided giving Ginko such heavy sins.

Lulu was a treasure.
