As far as suffering that a real person could deal with, vanilla Okabe is already way up there and Kurisu has some pretty major baggage too. Zero Okabe is basically surviving on antidepressants and the need to not make Mayuri worry and even then he's a pitiful husk of a man.

I saw the anime back when it was airing, but since it already adapted the true end (and I got spoiled on some VN things in the threads anyway), I never bothered playing the original VN. Picked it up recently at steam sale, but my friend gifted me the S;G0 VN.

Needles to say, I'm more tempted to play through 0 first since it's all new content, rather than sit through 50 hours of the original VN.

I will play the original S;G either way - can I play through 0 first, though? And then come back to the original after completing 1-2 endings of 0.

What really interests me about Zero is what it could mean for an actual sequel. Kurisu and Mayuri both living and her time travel paper being destroyed averts WW3 and renders SERN unable to cheat to world domination but the Amadeus research still exists, the dangerously brilliant mind of Kurisu is still in play and all sorts of things could happen. That's the brilliant part of a well thought out time travel narrative. You can use it to reveal things and play with them independently of what 'really' happens.

Really all that the original locks down is roughly how long it takes for Okabe to turn back to time travel as a tool and that at some point a video is sent to 2010. Believe me when I say that Zero will blindside you. I thought I was pretty deep in spoilers but it's got a lot of tricks up its sleeve.

That's my main reason for wanting to play through 0 first. I pretty much avoided all spoilers (I only know whose daughter shows up from the future later on (and I'm not talking about Suzuha here) ), so 0's story should surprise me quite often, whereas playing through 0 fist basically boils down to "oh hey they didn't mention that in the anime huh. cool".

Even though I know I know it was coming, I still got quite emotional during the first Amadeus scene. I can't wait too see just much will the unavoidable despair later on make me suffer.

I'm really enjoying the feeling it's conveying that something is wrong with the world. Life goes on, but even then it's apparent that you've gone down a dark path, and not just because you know that this is basically the bad end of the true end.
