Start at the beginning of the Sanctuary saga is a classic. Then go for Asgard (another good arc), Poseidon is meh but kinda short. The entire Hades saga is great.

If you liked the show try Omega, it caused massive butthurt in spicland.

There was nothing good on TV at the time and Saint Seiya had blood and shit.

Skip to the 12 temples saga. The beginning has too much filler.

Well I can say it's because it was the first anime (at least in south america) that was more violent and targeted toward teens.

At that time we had Ramna, Sailor moon, Saint seiya and some other random shit. A bit later we got DB/DBZ. If Dragon ball came out before Saint seiya, I can see Saint seiya being a lot less beloved.

I guess there's something for everyone. SS is huge on China, way bigger than in Japan, and chinks love stories about honor and homoerotism, see wuxia flicks and heroic bloodshed. Rose of Versailles and Grendizer were huge hits on France years before SS and they happened to have the same character designer, Shingo Araki, and they also have a melancholic dramatic tone so there was a continuity. Latin America likes melodrama and machismo so that's it.

I can see why some fans are mad at Toei for changing the ending of Kanon stopping the lance and I think it was not only important for the next arc but fitting the twins theme (Saga chose to kill himself by harakiri, Kanon chose to repay his sins by being impaled and joining Athena) but back on 1989 the staff thought that was it for Saint Seiya so they probably wanted to give Seiya a last chance to be a hero before going off the waves and there was no reason to foreshadow a redemption to Kanon because it was confirmed that was the last episode. They never expected 13 years later the show would continue and people would still continue discussing it 27 years in the future

Thankfully the "13 years" timeline is mentioned only a couple times in the entire story so it's easily ignored. Because yeah, it makes not one shred of sense.

It does make more sense than Saori's grandfather drowning in pussy to produce 100 sons (God knows how many women, but SILLY, WOMYNS CAN'T BE SAINTS) in THE SAME YEAR (roughly).

Japan is ridiculously big on preserving tradition, so even when you've shifted protagonism to a younger generation, whenever a classic hero is brought up it's hyped as the ultimate badass.

I understand respect for previous heroes, but it gets in the way of the narrative when they outshine the actual protagonists. In Omega it got ridiculous by the end, when some of the old cast kept "dying" and then it turned out they were just napping under rocks.

Silver wasn't all that bad because they had more variety mixed up for the new characters, Pavlin is absolutely nothing like Shiva from the old anime and so on. That was good.

With the gold saints I thought they'd have struck gold (pun intended) with Ionia but then a lot of the characters just were concept rethreads and that's boring (Cancer with Meikai Ha and being a dick, Virgo is the mandatory eyes-wide-shut buddhist pretty boy and so on).

But since they were just trying to do everything at once (retell the old arc with Martians as enemies having been a bait and switch, come up with ANOTHER hidden antagonist out of the blue and retell the old arc as weirdly as possible) it sure suffers a lot from uneven parts.

S1 still has better character moments hands down though.

I like each season for different reasons but I feel that S2 ended rushing stuff probably because of schedule too (it had days off THE ENTIRE YEAR, it's why the episode count is lower - Seiya vs Titan for one was way too short).

The ending for S1 was a lot more 'full circle' than S2's, though I do like the Saturn fight for its craziness (the armors are shattering like hell with each blow and ROLLING CRUSHING a small star is awesome).

They italian dub went out of the way in this regard, they used verses from the works of famous italian's poets and the tone was almost like that of a poem. Nostalgia aside it's like true SS never came to Italy.

Brazilian f/a/ggot here. Although we don't speak Spanish in Brazil, I can give you my two cents on why Saint Seiya is hugely popular here.

The reason for that is because it was one of the first Anime (or "japanese cartoon", as the normies at the time would call it) to be shown around our monkey infested beaches. It also took a lot of people by surprise because of the blood, something that you wound't see in other shows back then.

It grew a cult following and it remains hugely popular here, with the games being released in Brazilian Portuguese and shit.

The concept was really original for it's time and so was the plot, it's not Kurumada's fault that every hack in the last 20 years keeps copypasting his works.

Ring ni Kakero is the same, it was the one that started the whole battle shonen thing and so you can see people using RnK's plot points in every battle shonen, if it was released today it wouldn't be famous but that means nothing since it was released back in the 70's.

I love how Kurumada had no issues having genuine assholes on the good side of the war which only accentuated the boy scouts that had most of the spotlight.

Saint Seiya was very popular because we didn't have anything better.
It was the fist anime in Monkeyland, but it was the first anime with blood and people LOVE blood here.
I was 9 years old whe SS was on TV. I never liked it, the plot was stupid and for a long time I didn't like anime, because I thought that all of them were like Saint Seya (we had a lot of SS's clones on TV) or all about fights.

All my grow up friends those have watched the Hades's arc have said "I didn't remember it was so dumb before".

Excellent soundtrack. Dare I say, the original series has one of the top 10 orchestrated soundtracks in the history of animation. Frankly 90% of the hype comes from the ost alone. Not the openings and shit, but the actual fighting songs.

Decent action, gorgeous watercolor backgrounds, gayish designs, slightly edgier than Dragon Ball.

It's also peculiar because in Spain was absolutely uncommon to chanbge songs. Even in shows like Dragon Ball where they dubbed the song, they kept the same. (Well, what is more common that it should be is to keep the first OP and ED for the entire series, like they did with Keroro). Spic here, and let me tell you that aside from from the action, the marvelous soundtrack and of course nostalgia,Kurumada was able to convey a real sense of dread in most of the battles.You knew the sacrificies the characters made had a real weight to them since there was no revival button (like in say Dragon Ball),so when the characters died you knew they would stay dead. that coupled with the fact that there was always some kind of ticking clock scenario always gave the manga/anime an actual feeling of urgency. Plus it had one of the OG shounen badasses in pict realated,who didn't mind treating his opponents the way they would treat one of their victims.
