Having Fukurodani lose against Itachiyama seems like a smart way to make them menacing. Ushijama was chosen for Japan's U19 team because his way of play is pretty identical to how college volleyball and above is played, his brute strentgh is top tier but that's all he has (which is why Aoba Johsai were training with college teams) and because he was a third year.

Sakusa is already better than him and his team was favourite to win Nationals even before Karasuno beat everyone in Miyagi, in fact that line about Itachiyama being favourite to win it all came out during the Tokyo training arc with Nekoma and Fukudorani.

To be honest I'm really glad about this development. Mainly because people don't really change. Kageyama is a king, and he should accept that and use to his and his team's advantage. Like they told him, as long as he isn't an asshole about it there should be no problems. And if you reread the manga it's pretty obvious that Kageyama the King still was around but only manifested himself with Hinata who can handle that side of him and even bosses him around and takes the lead from time to time. But with the rest of the team it was different and Kageyama just tried to accommodate himself to them because that's what Ukai told him and because of bad experiences.

You could say that about any opponent in that case. Flat, 2D characters; protagonist or antagonist or mob characters or whatever aren't compelling or interesting at all. What point is there in having a difficult obstacle to overcome if there's no depth to it. I don't know if you've read Black Clover, but there are characterswho have just declared themselves the MC's rival for no reason and it comes off as forced and cliche. Compare that to, say, Bungo Stray Dogs, where the MC is in a Senpai-Kouhai relationship and there's an antagonistic rival character who is jealous of the acknowledgement the MC has received. There's a good reason for there to be conflict there, and we as readers understand why the rival character is acting the way they do, which allows us to empathise with them and ultimately care about what happens. You could, but that hasn't been the case in haikyuu until now. The other opponent teams such as johzenji, datekou, nekoma, fukurodani, and seijou characters actually have personality that is built up naturally and they feel like actual characters.

Ushijima has this dull presence the entirety he's been in the manga and then one flashback tries to give him depth. It might not have been so bad if it wasn't the longest arc in the manga so far.

From what I understand, winning the inter-high grants you access to the nationals. If you lose (like Karasuno), then you get a second chance during the spring tournament, which apparently is harder for some reason I don't remember. Somebody will probably be able to explain it better, because I don't even remember if that's how it works.

Both look like they're trying to be realistic and it doesn't fit the rest of the artwork at all.

I think it's weird how there's no sense of urgency in the manga right now. Like every single team in the tournament is as good or better than them but it feels like the author's ready to just line-up throwaway teams in front of Karasuno until they meet with one of Fukurodani/Nekoma/Sakusa, etc.

All this passing of the baton is a bit suspicious. So I wouldn't be surprised if they lost here, although at the same time there's been a lot of build up for that match against Nekoma.
