Personally, I think that on a world-building level, Dog Days "" was fine.
Teaching us about the dragons, the continent, showing the immense sky whale, other spirits and minor monsters living in harmony and peace, that there are other nations and such was a nice thing.
But as >>150172100 said, the cast became just too large.
Also, the dramatic battle that season 3 started with got handled too cleanly.
It loses all tension when everyone still gets turned into a cute little furballs after getting hit hard, despite it being a battle against the freaking demons nearly corrupting the entire dragon continent.

Season 2 was all fun and too much character. Such a shame because season 1 was so magical.

It did start like it would look to be more serious, but it then turned out that it was less serious and dramatic than season 1's big battle against the great demon.

Sales weren't actually that bad for our current era.
A fourth season is always possible.
Ultimately, it depends on what a production committee expects to gain out from a fourth season, and if market analysts predict that it would be a good time to make a continuation for it.
