I dunno about that. Aside from the amount of shading details, the subtle different color choices and the thickness of lines are really what set apart the two versions to me >>150163110

There is also how Yoshikazu highligh with dots shapes instead of lightning shaped. The way he colors pupils is also pretty recognizable. Same for the skin color, it's different from the usual. Look at the way he shades Kazuya's and Kiriha's nose, nothing more complex but still different.

All those stuffs really makes Yoshikazu's covers nice looking and much less bland. That Anime cover is really lacking some of the original's identity. It's all about little things.

Incoming "nitpicks"

The eyes are the first thing, and the first warning flag for this adaptation. Unless you are doing a complete overhaul of the designs (rarely necessary) and sometimes even if you are (see: MP100), you don't fucking touch the eyes. The most obvious victim in this promo shot is Kiriha, who has gone from having a roguish, confident look, to simply "cheerful".

Color palette, a painful reminder of the digital age of anime - stick to fairly stock palettes, don't match the original work just find the closest "safe" color. This is mostly in regards to hair colors, as Tsugumomo isn't a series that adheres to specific costumes and their associated palettes, characters often have multiple outfits within a short span of time.

Anatomy. Yea, this one could be, well, not nitpicky but at the very least an unrealistic expectation given the high standard of the original work. But at the very least, whatever the fuck is going on with Kokuyou's face, issues like that should be avoidable.

Kukuri is barely recognizable. That's really all that can be said about it.

On the upside, good to see consistency in Kazuma's design with regards to how he appears later in the series, even if the first point about the designs still applies.

If anything, the worst thing about the key visual is that they chose to redraw existing art instead of making something new to avoid these comparisons and make the anime style look better.
