What do you get anon?

The walking dead
>>
>>150155178
DVDs were out by then. Bad choice.

Battle Angel
>>
>>150155178

There are one of these in the Park City mall in Lancaster, pretty Neato.
>>
Probably some shitty Funi DBZ dubbed episodes.

There's a chance that I'd come across Ranma or something, though, and buy it two years earlier than I actually did - I would have recognized it from the Super Nintendo RPG, which I enjoyed.

I moved out of my parents house in '98 and by 2002 I was living on my own and buying my own anime. Mostly from the Virgin store that was across the street from my apartment.

I remember when I bought Excel Saga asked to see my ID (I have a babyface). I couldn't figure out why until I watched the last episode.

So if my mom was buying me anime I'd ask her to buy this one and demand the cashier ask to see her ID.

>Mostly from the Virgin store that was across the street from my apartment.
Did you find it ironic around the time?
>>
>>150155580
At the time I didn't think much of it but looking back I wonder what people who weren't from around there would think when I'd say, "Oh I'm gonna pop off to the Virgin store for a little bit and check out their goods."

Shit, son. Just one?

Probably a Ranma OVA or pic related. I'd try to keep my power levels as low as I could even if I was dying inside to get me stuff like the Dragon Ball or Sailor Moon movies.
>>
>>150155231
and personally with the late teen refined tastes I'd acquired at that stage without 2nd thought would've taken out (don't shoot pls don't shoot officer I'm white!) Sponge Bob Squarepants. Dead seriously not a shit post but is if you view it with an eye not influenced by previous influence of "this thing belongs here since this is what is said and those other things go over there" but in some ways if there was an anime that absolutely didn't take itself(or it's fans) seriously it wouldn't be Walt Disney type cartoons it'd be nonsensical comedic genius like Spongebob (Genuine no shit post and I say this with the authority of a junior one brown stripe belt 8 week manga afficionado;)
>>
Dragon Ball Z every month. This was literally my childhood.
>>
Probably Escaflowne movie or AKIRA.
>>
Literally did buy this around that time.

Yes. The Tenchi Muyo movies off of Direct Connect.

This.
Everything else about OP's scenario is accurate for me except the year, however.

And it was Ranma 1/2.
>>
>>150155178
I bought the Sailor Moon R season, Doom Tree Arc box set on VHS. It was the dub.
>>
>>150155178
Looks like those blockbuster cancer threads have finally made it to /a/
>>
I remember getting dubbed Ranma tapes back in those days
>>
>>150155178
By 2002, DVD's were becoming common, so if you were buying VHS at Suncoast it was probably clearance discount stuff. Still a year away from torrents, and mail order Netflix was available. A good choice would be something that is not being released on DVD.
Ranma is probably a good choice since it was past peak popularity and Viz never did the DVD's. Or some of the Central Park Media OVA's, since a lot of those got orphaned. Urusei Yatsura or Oh My Goddess were good. ADV was doing a good job releasing their back titles on DVD like Evangelion and Nadesico.

James Bond Jr.

Anon, I found out yesterday that there's a fucking Xenosaga anime. This industry will never cease to amaze me.
>>
>>150156931

People miss the nostalgia of going to Blockbuster and getting a film, along with the snacks and microwave popcorn. It was a process.

You can still simulate it if your public library carries movies.

>>

oh shit I remember this place had a hentai section
>>

I bought so much fucking manga there, since with the card you basically got one free for every two/three you bought.
>>
>>150157342
It makes me wonder what a Xenogears anime would've been like. The anime of the Evangelion of video games.
>>
>>150157303

In 2002 or now?
>>
>>150157090
>20 dollars for two episodes dubbed, or 30 for the same two subbed
>30 for 3-5 episodes both dubbed and subbed, often with subs in 2 or 3 languages
A 26 episode anime would be 12 vhs for 240 dubbed or 360 subbed, vs 6 dvds for 180 getting both. Granted that's full retail, and only idiots paid full retail.
>>
>>150157431
3 or 4 years ago.
>>
Anime and manga was obscure in my country back then. And the people into that stuff were almost part of a non-existent underground community.
At most they only showed dubbed Pokemon and Dragonball on tv once a week
>>
>>150157396
It's fantastic until the 3/4s mark. From that point on it's just a different character each episode narrating what happened, how it happened, and why it happened without any visuals until they get to the final fight which is fully animated.
>>
Naked children interest me.

Sorry, but that was back in 96-99. I started switching over to DVDs as soon as I realized I can have both dub/subs.

Was this decent enough for someone who's never seen it to watch it today? It did have groovy music.
>>
>>150157212
It's super low budget and terrible. It's seriously one of only two anime I've ever dropped (the other being Futakoi Alternative); I tried to watch when it was airing and gave up by ep 2.

I'd tell mom "N-No, I'm too old for anime now".
>>
I didn't watch anime in 2002. I didn't watch anime until I got to college in 03 and was introduced to it.

In 2002, I was probably buying Godzilla vs Biollante.

Hey Futakoi Alternative was fun. A lot better than Futakoi was.
