Nothing happened. We got a little background of the relationship between Mamiko and Kumiko, but that's it. The whole episode was filler.

The season feels unfocused - there's no overarching plot to balance out all the drama that's going on. In the first season you had them trying to make the nationals and Kumiko's nascent romantic life, but now there doesn't seem to be any story other than the interpersonal drama of different characters who are completely forgotten once their episode(s) end.

It feels like something's missing. Like a car with only three wheels.

Shuichi giving Kumiko a late birthday gift is symbolism that its never too late to pursue sonething/someone you want.

Because they really had to jam two novels into one series, so a lot had to be compromised.

I really don't like the way they had to tell this series, but I can see the conundrum even if they could afford to go two cours.

It seems like both arcs could've been told right over something like 16 or 18 episodes, not a full two cours. Anything more would've been dragging on.

It doesn't have to happen in the novels. It's part of adapting the work, especially if you're given a pile of shit to work with (not that I'd know about the quality of the novels).

I don't think you can deny that a lot of this series has been weaker, even if what's shit has been a direct adaptation.

Half of the first arc is told exclusively in sepia flashbacks, and in the last episode, the whole "a month has passed" time skip is weak. That's something that definitely couldn't been addressed better given more episodes.

I kind of want to see what Memedori and whozuki are up to, even if they're side characters in the novels. You can't give them that much time in the first series and just throw them out. They just turn up to do the ED in a lot of episodes.
