It's shitty but I can't really think of a good way around it that doesn't involve either splitting up the text or weird tl gimmicks like adding the dash or cut off word only once they are surprised or something stupid like that.

I'm a pretty fast reader myself, though I know I'm not the fastest by far. That said, I've seen people here say they can barely keep up or can't keep up with subs, so maybe in their slowness they finish by the time the actual words are finished being spoken, so the surprise is still there.

You'd be surprised friend. Some of the slowest readers are native English speakers. I see college students still read by putting their finger on words as they go.
