The characters have no clear motivation for anything. At one point they literally lead the enemy to a mobile suit and get in it with her so they can be kidnapped, but not on purpose.

I didn't get the story to well while it was airing so I didn't really care for the show, but on a second viewing where I was able to marathon stuff it comes together more nicely
