How come this holds up so well?
Does it?

It holds up really well if you like the whole fantasy dungeons and dragons type setting.
The humour and parody parts are quite light hearted too which helps.

Because they had fun with it and enjoyed making it.

2D ages well. Hand drawn ages even better.
Megumi is one of the best VAs of all time.
The author hit al the right notes--excellent world-building, characters, and narrative.
And lastly, there's been a dearth of good fantasy anime so Slayers has had very little competition. Fantasy has made a comeback in the guise of Isekai, but we saw very little of it for a long time.

Amelia is of course the best girl.

Nailed it. Especially the world building. Also, I loved how in later season they couldn't use some of the most powerful spells anymore, because they killed that particular Lord. And I think it was one of the first high fantasy shows to state the obvious: you can't harm a demon with a spell that draws power from that demon.

I think Shabranigdo was so hard to fight because you couldn't really use Black Magic against him. With 2 exceptions, of course.

I liked the whole thing they did with the monster race as well portraying them as ancient powerful being as opposed to just run of the mill trash the heroes kill.

It's too bad the anime never delved into the God race.
>watch the first movie
>they upgraded lina now looks like she has a decent pair of tits
>in walks naga
>literally fucking balloon monster tits
Lina just can't catch a break.
Also, that fucking soundtrack.
Can I get away with just watching the OVAs? Series is a bit of a time investment.

Yeah, make sure you watch the movies too.
Or I suggest you stop watching the tv series after the second season.

There is nothing wrong with Try. They tried a little too hard to emulate Next, and some episodes made no sense, but overall it was a nice try. If after Next you still want some Gourry and Zelgadis and Amelia, just try Try.

I know, I still liked Try a lot.
Revolution and onward was a fucking joke though, for the most part.
DRAGON BUMP
Reminder that Naga is the best.
