acceptable as long as it's in japanese and you don't bother reading shippuden
>>
Starting on よつばと. There's plenty in each chapter that I don't quite understand though. Would it make sense to read a translated version afterwards to make sure I've got the gist of it correctly?
>>
>>150086777
No, you don't know enough japanese to know whether the translation is doing the right thing, and it wasn't translated with japanese learners in mind. Yotsubato's story is simple enough that you'll understand the gist anyways, and any confusions you have will reinforce any realizations you make about what someone is saying later on, making you learn more.
>>
>>150086803
Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks.

I can almost always follow the story anyway but every now and then I'll find a few words that I don't know that end up with me having little idea of what is being said in that panel. I'll just keep adding those unknown words to my deck for now.
>>
Am I allowed to ask questions about the language in here?

if so yes

Which is a better choice for first time trying to read raw manga? An easy manga I'm not too interested to read otherwise or a difficult manga I'm interested in reading? Weighing out the sides and on one hand I'd be less motivated with easier but less interesting works, but on the other hand the difficulty and work for the higher level manga might hamper my enjoyment if I just read it translated in English.
>>
>>150087645
Both, and continue reading the one you feel more like reading.
>>
>>150087645
Depends on how easy and how hard you are talking about. Depends on what kind of person you are. Depends on your resolve. Depends on a lot of things.

つぐもも
ダンベル何キロ持てる (found it on /fit/ of all places)

I also briefly followed ケンガンアシュラ, but that got kinda boring after a while because I realized カルラ will never get to breed with MC.

It's obvious why simplistic VNs are popular in DJT. They show simple sentences in small chunks, one, two, three lines at a time. Clearly that's needed when DJT gets stumped by anything that seems longer.

Came to this thread earlier and was fucking disappointed to see that it started as some hiding place for DJT. I used those threads rather frequently in the past too, but the posting quality really dropped as time went on.
Glad people started posting some raw manga afterwards.
Also for on-topic matters for anyone interested in some cute gal stuff I recommend 星野目をつぶって、rather straightforward and somewhat cliché but at least makes for a comfy experience.

Recently burned through much of Mizu Asato's work. Plenty of short series and single-volume compilations with a lot of cute romance and lewd stories.

Also huge amounts of sex and toilet humour. I'm no fan of that, but there's something about the way she does it that I genuinely enjoy or at worst can easily endure.

This is from 男三女四, which got some attention recently as a translation effort spawned here.

I just discovered 明日ちゃんのセーラー服 (pronounced Akebi).

It's a lovely coming-of-age story about this country girl who faces her insecurities as she tries to fit in in the girls' school of her dreams.

The art is full of visual porn about the girl and her environment that confronts you with the fact that you're a sick fuck because you find it erotic even though it's perfectly innocent.

This is from chapter #2, which starts with 4 (four) pages of nothing but Akebi tying her hair into a ponytail.

Published monthly at http://www.tonarinoyj.jp/manga/akebi/ .

Seems like a good place to ask.

Trying to rip Watashi no Kairos by Karaage Tarou from ebookjapan. It mostly worked but either keeps running into an uncaught exception when it's around 150 pages, or doesn't even start properly. Using mindl.

Pic related, one of the ripped pages.

Karaage Tarou (or Karaagetarou/Kara'agetarou/Karaageya/Karaage's Shop) has drawn a lot of non-H full color Touhou doujinshi in his oddly storybook-like art style. He/She is also a good writer. I want to try getting this book downloaded since it's one of EBJ's ACTUAL good-sized raws, but this shit keeps burning me.

Anyway, mindl author here. I've been getting a couple of complaints about EBJ, and I'm not too surprised. It's a shitty method of ripping that relies on EBJ not changing even the slightest of things or it'll just all falls apart. The worst part is I can't seem to reproduce the errors either, so it's hard for me to fix them. Since you've got 150 pages already, you could just do it the tedious way of going into each canvas through your browser for the rest of them and ripping it that way.

For what it's worth, I'm working rewriting the whole thing and I'll be looking into finding a way more reliable way of ripping EBJ.

That's like that FF method of screencapping or something, right?

Kanjitomo works just fine for manga. Also, it's not so hard to keep a tab open with kanji search and just draw the kanji or do a radical search.
>>
>>150093359
I am using Kanjitomo, and even the script that makes it less of a pain in the ass, but it still is nowhere near as convenient as texthooking a VN, especially with the anki import feature.

Press F12 with Firefox, then do this. It'll put the image (full resolution) on your clipboard in the form of a data URI. You can paste this into a browser to display the image, allowing you to save it. I'd recommend saving the strings in a text file first before you try pasting it into the address bar because of the fact that they're massive and tends to freeze both FF and Chrome (at least on my end).

Alternatively, you could just use Python or whatever other programming language to decode the strings you get, since they're just base64 encoded PNG files.

Not quite, but here's a quick script I wrote now that can convert those URIs into images:
https://gist.githubusercontent.com/MinoMino/b346c0926411f7834fb7d50b15b2da9c/raw/837f6de850714565815745ea84610b1cdb03a078/decb64png.py

So if you, for instance, have a textfile called images.txt with one URI for every line, just put the script in the same folder as it and run:
python decb64png.py images.txt

That should decode all the strings and output all the images in that same folder.

Why don't we just use distributed P2P like normal people?

>>
>>150112896
>distributed P2P like normal people
While I would hardly use the words "distributed P2P" and "normal people" in the same sentence, this is actually an idea I've been kicking around for a long time. I used to operate a Freenet node, which has all the facilities to ensure an absolutely bulletproof operation, but it might be overkill for what we're doing. Or it might not be, I'd have to investigate.
>>
>>150112989
Freenet only allows single-part file downloads, which makes it unusable for large multimedia. GNUnet allows chunking, much like torrents.

Here's a chart I stole from the GNUnet website and colorcoded.
>>
>>150113213
I understand that, but one thing that's conspicuously missing from that chart is any talk of a distributed filestore. One of the unique properties of Freenet is that it's not reliant on seeders. As long as a file continues to be in demand, it will remain accessible on the network, even after its original uploader is long gone. This is not an attribute held by most filesharing networks. Considering some of the problems we've seen on Nyaa, I think this added robustness is very valuable for what we're doing.
>>
>>150113866
GNUnet has a relay cache system. Seeders are still the ideal way to distribute a file, just like in Share for example, but GNUnet caches relayed data based on supply and demand, much like PD.
>>
>>150113907
At least in theory. I haven't checked the actual design document on that part of it. But it does have a DDS cache built into the network.

Would AnoHana be a good starting point for someone who hasn't read any raw manga but still knows a little of Japanese (Went to Jap lang school for 2 years or so) ?

I'm asking because I don't really like reading on pc/phones and I want to start buying raw manga (with furigana) so I can read them on the bus.

A Japanese grammar reference from the A Dictionary of Japanese Grammar books to help with looking up things while reading raw manga. Spent a while cleaning up the markup and moved all three volumes' main entries to an additional single full reference page:
http://djt.neocities.org/bunpou/full_day.html
Offline copy with necessary images:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/8dppbpqczwm0rcn/Grammar+Reference+Offline.zip
Might start back up converting the rest of the images therein to searchable and copy/paste-able text. It is sitting on the first volume and a handful of the second volume complete.

By the way, if anyone feels like grabbing some free digital raws, Rakuten is having a 450円 off deal for all new accounts. Here is a list of everything in the 400~499円 bracket, to give you an idea of what you can grab.
http://search.books.rakuten.co.jp/bksearch/dt?maxp=499&mt=0&o=0&minp=400&cy=0&h=100&g=101904&e=0&v=1&spv=2&s=1&sv=30

It's also a story that spans 10 years, so MC starts out as a loli but she'll be totally legal by the end of the story.

The words used are a little advanced and mainly deal with religion terminologies so it was a little hard to follow sometimes.

I hope a scanlation group picks it up eventually so more people can enjoy the story, or I might just do it myself eventually.

>>150148527
Ah that kind of sucks, I can't stand anons from other boards, they are too リア充 for me.
>>
>>150148623
Basically, when you make a list of three or more objects in english (like "this, that, and the other"), the comma before the "and" is called the "oxford comma". Unless you use the oxford comma at all times, english text becomes ambiguous:

>I want a pie, apples and sauce.
"I want a pie with apples and sauce"
>I want a pie, apples, and sauce.
"I want a pie, and apples, and sauce"

Unless you use the oxford comma in all three-item lists, the reader cannot know whether the first quoted example means the first or second meaning. This is only one reason why the oxford comma is "mandatory"; there are many more.

The only people against the oxford comma are news publishers that want to save a few dollars on ink.

>>
>>150148865
>That means the same thing, dingus.
"A pie with apples and sauce" specifically refers to a single dish centered around a pie. "A pie, and apples, and sauce" doesn't. You can send someone to the store to get "a pie, apples, and sauce" and not get "a pie with apples and sauce" back.

The yakuza childhood friend subplot feels kinda redundant in this manga. It's like it's only there because the author just loves writing about yakuza.

Yes, definitely. I read something considered "advanced" not long ago and while I wasn't noticing myself improving while reading, when I got back reading "beginner" or "intermediate" manga I noticed how smooth it had become. I can read those more or less fluently now although I would struggle before.

Beginner would be pretty much anything with 振り仮名. It doesn't necessarily have to be よつばと although if that's what you want to read then go for it of course, just know that there are plenty of manga out there who are as easy if not easier.

For example ecchi manga are good to start with, especially since they're compelling.

Intermediate would be manga without 振り仮名 and treating a particular subject, like magic themes, or SF themes, and such.

Advanced would be the same as intermediate but this time with a writer writing in a more refined and "adult" way (see : 青年 manga).

Just my opinion.

Most of my actual beginner manga have no furigana and don't stuck to elementary kanji. It's weird. Stuff written for kids has difficult spoken grammar, stuff written for middle/highschool students has "normal" grammar but slightly harder kanji.

Easy: SoL, the most challenging being the occasional word plays

Hard: Hard Sci-fi due to terminologies and stuff

Lunatic: Kumeta's stuff and similar works due to needing to know not only word plays but also cultural references as part of the key story. Also, seinen and josei stuff that has somewhat more prose.

Yeah what I said shouldn't be taken literally, happens that some manga without 振り仮名 end up being easier than one who has them.
