Let's be honest. it's not Kayo's fault. It's the author's. He is a hack. That was a major FUCK YOU to the fans and he knew it. Which is kind of a big point in the manga. The ability to move on and appreciate life. Kayo was a character that was meant to contrast Yashiro who couldn't move on with his life. His life basically stopped when Satoru's stopped and he lived in some sort of eternal limbo because he wanted Satoru to wake up so badly so that he would be able to move on. When he realized he couldn't move on without him he decided to kill himself and Satoru.

Yashiro was terribly miserable and lonely all of his life because he has no friends, his whole persona was a fabricated lie. Kayo was similar in a way that she was lonely and had no friends and was miserable as a result. When she met Satoru she was able to open up and form relationships that would allow her to move on with her life and live to the fullest. Yashiro just hang on to Satoru as hard as he could because Satoru gave his life some sort of validation and because he became some obsessive with Satoru he is somehow "best girl"
