Serious question to people who spam "Read" as their advice. Other than possibly ease of look up (text hooker/rikai) what advantage do you think reading has over just watching anime with japanese subtitles?

books usually have a much higher density of information that's conveyed through language, so you learn more language by reading them
that's not to say anime is a bad way to get practice in though
books obviously don't do you as much good in the listening department
also english subbed cartoons are the sole way I absorbed any grammar for the first five months of learning the language before I opened an LN

The main one is the pace at which you go. With anime you have to go at a set speed, which is likely to be far too quick for a beginner. With reading, you get to go at a pace suited perfectly for you, so you can make sure you have enough time to properly appreciate and understand the sentence, and not waste time when you're ready to move on.
And, although this is just my personal opinion, quality moe VNs tend to be better written than easy SoL anime.

Yeah I can see how that would be a prob...
>With anime you have to go at a set speed, which is likely to be far too quick for a beginner.
What? This is the exact opposite of what I would think. You can always pause anime or drama. But at some point the density of sentences drops to quite a bit below what you could go through by reading for the same amount of time, just due to all the time between sentences,
>And, although this is just my personal opinion, quality moe VNs tend to be better written than easy SoL anime.
I definitely completely disagree here. Sol anime tend to be about comedy, and many are quite funny. I almost never find moege funny. The VNs that have done best to make me laugh are leaving the moege territory (Grisaia, Oretsuba) or are absolutely 100% not moege. Dies Irae and Muramasa were funnier than any moege I've tried when they actually had scenes focused on humor.

>What? This is the exact opposite of what I would think. You can always pause anime or drama. But at some point the density of sentences drops to quite a bit below what you could go through by reading for the same amount of time, just due to all the time between sentences,
Well, if you're at this level you're really not a beginner anymore, right? So yes, reading is superior to anime for intermediates as well.
And moege, while they have comedy and it should be funny, unlike SoL comedy anime it generally isn't the primary focus. The primary focus is on developing loving and heart-warming relationships. I don't know what moege you've read, obviously there's a lot of trash out there, but the best ones are really good.
With that said, a better writer will be more enjoyable than a worse writer, so yes Dies Irae's going to have more enjoyable writing than Twinkle Crusaders. But if you're at that level, you should really completely ignore study altogether and just read and watch whatever you want, like I do.

Is this why you learn how write them/learn radicals?

A number without a measure word doesn't make sense in chinese, every noun quantity that is stated in mandarin needs a measure word after it. The only exception is when you say "3 days" or "3 years", because days, years and some other quantities are measure words themselves.
The most common measure word is 個 (个) and if you don't know the particular measure word you can always use it.
One difference in chinese is that the specifier (This, that, which) will have a measure following after, so you see 個 all the time, but you don't see that with japanese specifiers (sono,kono,...) . Both definite and indefinite objects have a measure word following after in mandarin.
The measure word can tell you what kind of object you are dealing with, like there's one for animals, thin objects, glasses/cups, books,.... Works the same way in japanese i think, but sometimes its not as obvious in japanese because 一杯 which means 1 glass is written in hiragana いっぱい, but i have noticed 本 used for books quite often.
So to answer you question i would say there's probably the same amount of measure words in each language, but chinese uses them more because of the specifiers. 個 is the default measure in chinese so you see it all the time but im guessing it's more specific in japanese
if you're interested i can tell you're more about mandarin

Brazil. We haven't any school programs of the sort, but there is a Japanese franchise called Kumon here that teaches kid reading and math. In big cities there is also an optional Japanese course.
Most of Kumon's method is self-study, though, and I've wished I had Kumon in my city for a long time. Nowadays I live in the capital and there are plenty of them around, but I have decided I don't need to pay a self-study language course in order self-study. I will only loose time and money going there.
Generally I recommend this kind of thing to people who don't have enough discipline to learn and need an extra push. Putting your money into something, having some colleagues and a teacher make some people more dutiful to their learning.
When I was in University, though, there was a Japanese class I wanted to attend, but it clashed with my regular classes' schedule.
Hearing some testimonials from my colleagues who took it, though, I don't regret it that much - three months of self-study are worthier than the entire 3-semester course they give you. Hiragana took one semester with 2 classes a week, just to give you a scope.
Also bear in mind education is free, there is NO WAY in hell I would spend this shit-ton of money Americans burn into tuition fees for something this meager of a curriculum.

You COULD start off teaching in Japan and branch off into something else, but job hopping is frowned upon in Japan so think carefully before doing that. There's a saying that "Teaching is what gets your foot in the door"
HOWEVER, If you're taking Engineering or Computer Science, Japan will heavily want you. Japan is technologically advanced, computer science is desperately needed. So yes, definitely computer science major. Very good major to have.
If you happen to get married in Japan, japan's workforce is bleeding up the ass in certain jobs that work visas won't let you work, things like Farming. If you get married these would be very easy jobs to get but not very high pay.

The tl;dw is that college does NOT help you learn language, you can ALWAYS learn as fast or faster on your own, a group environment like that is actually more detrimental than not. The best way to learn a language does not need anything but native material, a dictionary, and some grammar guides that can be found for free online. College offers nothing.
Language schools in Japan, however, are really good because they FUCK you in the ASS if you don't get good fast. Like they put a fire under your ass and beat the shit out of you. They don't do anything you couldn't do on your own, but they force you to do it a minimum of 8 hours a DAY (not a week like college), so you'll get gud fast.

My dear anon friend, the grammar guides ARE the instruction from a native. Googling stuff and seeing yahoo answer results ARE the instruction from a native. Reading native material IS the "instruction" from a native. Let me tell you, I've had 0 direct help from natives aside from maybe a stealth native replying on DJT and now I'm fluent enough to read books without a dictionary and casually watch anime without subtitles (though I read so much more that my listening comprehension isn't as good as it could be). You really, really don't need direct native instruction. Just ask yourself. What can ONLY a native DIRECTLY talking to me teach me? Not vocabulary, dictionaries do a great job of that. Not kanji, likewise. Not grammar, guides and google will answer just about everything. The closest thing that you would "need" a native for is pronunciation, but that's a really minor detail and something that you should only really focus on after getting really good with the language anyway.

I did like 30-60 minutes of anki a day for 2 years before stopping. If you read a lot, I don't think you'll need Anki much, but you really do have to read a lot (I do a minimum of about 3-4 hours a day just because I like to read).
The immutable fact about language learning is you have to put in the time. There're methods more effective than others, but at the end of the day you have to put in an absurd amount of time. That time exposing yourself to a language gradually sticks that language in your head. If you spend a lot of time reading, you're going to start recalling the words, it's just a fact.

Well, maybe you can manage it, but, from my experience, it almost inevitably becomes too burdensome and you end up being shit in every one of them or overlapping information like sentence structure or idiomatic expressions, especially when they're closely related (this is not the case, though).
I've read somewhere that, when you're studying a language, your brain stores that information in a certain place; but, when you're studying multiple languages at the same time, your brain ends up storing all that information in the same place and the learning process turns into a complete mess because you're not able to compartmentalize all that information properly anymore and end up not making any progress at all.
>>150058697
My statement there is highly contextual.
One, Japanese pronunciation is among the simplest in the world. Even without giving it much focus, you can easily be understood by natives. I studied for alone in my room for 2 years before speaking to a single Japanese person yet I could still hold a smooth, comprehensible conversation with one despite completely untrained, amateur pronunciation. Two, a lot of pronunciation in Japanese in particular has to do with being comfortable using words and thus being able to say them fast in a normal sentence. If you're a beginner then there's no real point, all your pronunciation training will be defeated by your stammering and hesitation when thinking of what word to say.
>>150058108
The japanese should either embrace chinese characters or get rid of them.
with respect to characters, the only logical thing the japanese do that the chinese dont is have a script for foreign words. Is this sentence's grammar correct?
私はこの贈り物がお母さんでくれた。
>>150064658
How did you reach that conclusion? It would be more logical that you are the crossboarder here, as you don't even know the circumstances of this general.
For those of you who read manga on a tablet, what app do you use ?
>>150060199
they're speaking only of the consonant part, not the vowel part
>>150064693
「私はお母さんに贈り物をくれた」
Would be more accurate. Your sentence is too rigid. But it's still correct.
>>150064282
>and read text with a hooker
are hookers common where you live?
>>150064799
Doesn't 「私はお母さんから贈り物をもらった」 sound more natural, though?
>>150064917
The other two are wrong so probably
>>150064917
That sort of sounds like it could have been a gift from your mother given to you by a third party. It's unclear who the 'gift from mother' actually came from.
>>150064980
No, it doesn't. That'd be 「私はお母さんから*の*贈り物をもらった」
I guess
>>150064705
>as you don't even know the circumstances of this general
There are no circumstances. A mod once said one thing then a mod later said another thing.
Fuck off with your non-/a/ bullshit. Just because moderation is terrible doesn't give you permission to vomit all over the floor here.
>>150064799
Nah, くれる means to give, not receive, so 母さん and 私 should be switched. In your sentence it almost sounds like you gave something to your mom, except くれる can only be used when oneself is the recipient so it's simply ungrammatical
>>150064360
You can tell yourself that all you want, but VNs and LNs are cheap trash with no value that all but the most retarded manchildren read past high school. While manga is culturally rich and important on top of being useful for learning the language to a variable extent.
Idiots "read" LN/VN with text hookers by hovering over every word and fooling themselves into thinking they know Japanese. Intelligent people read actively through news and real conversations, as well as manga and literature (which obviously excludes LNs and VNs).
TV anime or drama with Japanese subtitles is fine for beginner/intermediate listening practice, of course it's mostly mediocre, but it's not like there are easy to find suitable alternatives like with reading.
Has anyone here used the rance series to learn?
>>150065016
Yeah, you're right. Using から in that sentence without の makes it incorrect.
>>150065203
No, it doesn't. Seriously, is this bait?
から is a particle just like に
>>150065190
all→none but the most retarded manchildren
>>150065183
Yeah, I only now noticed, but I misinterpreted the sentence. With で he actually meant that his mother gave him the present, not him that gave his mother the present.

>>150065466

You have to be 18 years old to use this site.
>>150065358
No, it says that から is more appropriate than に if the giver is non-human, but the opposite does not necessarily hold true i.e. it's ok to use に for a human giver, but it feels unnatural for a non-human one.
>>150065494

>>150065571
Reminder to not reply to anyone that gives a shit about how people communicate when they're not using slurs and meme magic
>people seriously replying to fucking jamal
爆笑wwwww
>>150065528
It isn't explicit but based on the fact that they use に for all the examples leading up to a non human giver and then use explain から and use it for a non-human/no-direct contact scenario I think it is implied. We should ask someone who knows for sure.
Perhaps から can be used to imply emotional distance or physical distance from human givers as well. In which case you might sound like a dick using から for your mother.
How many "again"s do you guys typically have to do on an Anki card before you guys get it down?
