You could argue most of Bake "feels like filler" since the majority of it is meaningless banter. There's a lot of fluff scattered throughout, but the plotlines in Nise are incredibly important and continue to have a dramatic impact on the series up until the very end.

Tsukihi and Karen certainly aren't in the running for best Monogatari character, but they're fine for what they are.

Not seen any of the series since nise was airing and I was high as a fucking kite when I watched it, is it worth watching from the beginning and watching the new stuff as well? Really enjoyed the kizumono LN as well if that helps

Owari 1 is important for the series though. Since Koyomi Vamp there wasn't an arc that was about Araragi, it's always about the girls.

Owari 1 covers why Araragi gave up justice and became a loner, which would lead to the events in Kizu, and dealing with Sodachi was facing his own past mistakes he chose to block from his mind. It also properly introduces the antagonist of final season and her dynamic with both Araragi and Hanekawa, and also shows the events that lead to Hanekawa traveling around looking for Oshino. And even Araragi being good in mathematics, which is something mentioned in Kizu, is the reason for him to get in an elite school and also for him to be able to go to college.

And Sodachi is a recurring character in the series, although she is mostly an accessory character like the fire sisters, outside of being indirectly responsible for the whole story through her actions as a kid and teenager.

And people like me who considers it the best probably don't evaluate arcs based on importance to the plot, but in how good it is as a standalone.

Hitagi's dedicated arc in the Second season was incredible for the simple fact that she was CONSTANTLY put in her place and always had her BS called out on. I loved her character in Bake but the characterization they put her through in the second season is on a whole other level. In Bake, she had this air of authority and had control of the situation (aside from the first 2 arcs of Bake), but in the Second season, due to circumstances bringing her into a state where she was becoming desperate, her immaturity and stubbornness stuck out like a sore thumb and she constantly got heat for it.
