Seems like a round about way to do it, all the author needed to do was have Chika tell him the truth and he would have hoped aboard the expedition ship without a second thought and without any romance involved, but I think Yuzuru is changing because before he would use his guilt of not being to help Hatohara to excuse his feelings for Chika, but now he is not afraid of not denying that he does like her
It's obvious they will still both meet Hatohara and Rinji in the future though
