Kindle is pretty much the only source that deliberately murders image quality. Pick Google Play Books or Kobo or something that actually allows a publisher to save the images in the original non downscaled resolution, and with JPG quality 98 instead of 40.

Why is Ryuuou no Oshigoto even that popular? From what I can tell it has a loli heroine who moves in with the MC (presumably alone) and judging by the later volume covers this probably turns into a harem of sorts, but being a shogi series I wouldn't expect this level of fandom.

This. It's basically Ano Hana in SAO where the main heroine in a group of childhood friends supposedly died, I say supposedly because the fourth volume's cover suggests otherwise, six years prior during their party's raid on an endgame which prompted a sudden shutdown of their VRMMORPG so now the players of the renewed VR world are hunting this digital ghost of hers for their own benefit.

Got good reviews, though only a few, and the covers gave me a good feeling about it so I picked it up in my last batch of books. Nothing particularly standout so far and the sequence of events are a tad convenient for moving the plot but it still holds my interest halfway in. I'm already expecting a Nagai/Okada adaptation in the next year.

It's not even so much that. Rem and Megumin are the new popular characters. Both had popular anime airing this year, so it's to be expected that they'd rank high. Yukino placing 4th is still good all things considered. The bigger cause of concern is that all the other Oregairu characters have been bumped out of the top 10.
