You realize they have more than enough influence and advertising resources to pay off a newspaper to run fluff pieces to plug their works right? The Newtype Awards are literally considered to be something that Kadokawa and Aniplex give to themselves for example. "expert" could just as easily be marketing speak for "interested parties" as in this award should go to us.

The Cool Japan Fund literally ruined late night anime through streamlining everything through ACJ and it's "talent" pool, putting all the decision making in the hands of a couple of big producers and making it's fanbase hilariously dumbed down and lacking in standards in the process with the drip feed of canned self serving hype marketing news the industry powers spew out to favor their own interests and which the fans eat up without question. Thanks to it all we really get almost every season now are shitty LN and Mobage ads in 12 episode chunks with the same generic casts, same tropey annoying waifu characters and same crappy staff of amateur directors/writers and music production teams. At least the people that actually gave a shit about anime are starting to find success elsewhere either working in games, doing live action or working with Western companies that still have some level of creative ambition. I'd argue the only people actually still doing their jobs in the late night anime sphere are the character designers though.

To be somewhat fair I don't even think Toho knew how huge a hit it was going to become. The Aniplex marketing machine is no doubt scrambling to do everything in it's power to play down Toho's successes in 2016 and find a way to leech off it's success at the same time. For example suddenly they're really interested in some of the staff that worked on it for their own projects despite never working with any of those people before and never even mentioning Your Name in any sort of it's own promotions before it became a hit. Since then any time anybody that had anything to tangibly do with Your Name like a character designer or animator has worked on one of their seasonal projects they've been sure to name drop the film almost as if they feel like they're somehow responsible in any way for that movies success.

The entire reason that movie succeeded by the way is because it didn't take a typically Aniplex like approach of just hiring whoever is trendy or favored by Toho to work on it at Comix Wave and just put people in their positions based on qualifications the traditional way. It also didn't try to appeal to movie goers with benefits campaigns or popular otaku people but made an educated bet on what they figured everyday Japanese people would want to see in a big budget animated movie. No movie could have that kind of box office just by hitting up the sort of otaku layer that Aniplex is always milking again and again. That's why that movie is nearing the 20 billion yen mark and Anthem of The Heart which was supposed to be their play to inherit the Ghibli heyday box office legacy barely cracked 1 million despite having about the same level of aggressive advertising and a tie-up with a mainstream music act to make stage greetings across Japan.
