I'm doing a little programming experiment. Are these sentences understandable without further context? I don't understand any of this since I'm just starting out.

Why is it that the Japanese need kana and furigana growing up. But the chinese start with Kanji right away?
>>
>>149981154
Because Chinese kanji (Hanzi) have basically one reading.
>>
>>149981154
chinese reading is less random so that's ok.
>>
>>149981154
Don't quote me on this, but I'd imagine there's a lot of "grown-up" characters that children can't read. Many simplified chinese characters (Japs use traditional) sort of have phonetic component so they're easier to read/learn in general.
>>
>>149981576
It's chinese in general that still has meaningful phonetic components. Simplified chinese is less regular. Kanji are selectively simplified, but the phonetic hints aren't very useful anyways.

Japanese accentuate words by changing the pitch, not the intensity of the sound like English does, so if you want to speak properly you need to learn how to say the words with the proper pitch accents. For a listener that makes almost no difference as far as understanding the words go, save for a very small set of words which differ only by pitch accent, like 橋 and 箸, but it's still good for your listening to be able to catch on pitch accent.

>>149996319
Telling people to start reading early is not the same as telling them to ignore didactic material. Reading as soon as you can start having a grasp on the text is indeed extremely beneficial.
>>
>>149996237

First off, the idea is do a basic grammar guide before reading. Second, it's not just reading and listening, but reading and listening with the intent to understand what's being said. That means looking up unknown words and grammar. That's the meaning of learning japanese.
>>
>>149996237
>If just reading or listening with no previous knowledge was enough to learn a language the entirety of /a/ would know Japanese by now.
No they wouldn't, because active listening/reading is a lot of work. It DOES teach you Japanese, maybe not the most efficient way but it can get you good way faster than classes can. But it takes too much effort for most people to do it.
>>
>>149996390
Don't try to deny it. It happens. See >>149996144

You're just retarded, dude. Obviously someone who doesn't know kana or grammar shouldn't try to read. That's why the OP of EVERY SINGLE THREAD has a link to the guide that recommends LEARNING KANA AND READING A GRAMMAR BOOK

Stop projecting. I've been reading for a while now.

>>149996612
I'll repeat myself. If you don't think this happens then you don't come here often. It's in every thread. People tell each other to go read without even giving a fuck where they are at.
>>
>>149996714
Everyone who is posting in this thread is capable of reading, period. If you aren't you should be reading the guide instead. So no, it is never wrong advice.
>>
>>149996662
Nobody is telling that person to read. The point is, learning grammar and kana is such a small part of the learning process that it's irrelevant. The bulk of the learning comes from reading. Everything else is marginal, save for maybe doing some anki for base vocab, but even that doesn't take 10% of the time you should spend reading if you ever want to get good. When a person tells you to fucking read he's assuming you're not an idiot and you won't try to read something you're incapable of understanding.
>>
Just study a language like Chinese where you don't need to study grammar at all.

>>149996662
Don't be retarded. Nobody is prohibited from coming here until they finish a grammar book.

The shitposters in these threads who frequently tell people to read or watch anime instead of studying grammar, using Anki, etc. don't care about the contents of the OP.
Problem is that these shitposters all too reliably get fed the attention they want and anyone who tells them to fuck off is hounded down by the shitposters who spend god knows how much time in these threads. The anon you are responding to probably thinks the shitposters are serious, which is also unfortunate.

>>
The thing is, it doesn't matter "where you're at", because if you still haven't reached the level where you can start reading simple content, what you need to do is very obvious and literally outlined in the guide. If you're asking for advice here, it's safe to assume that you already know a few hundred words and most of the grammar covered in Tae Kim's guide.

You don't have to finish, but if you haven't even begun to read a grammar book you should gtfo. If you read something in a grammar book and you aren't sure so you have a question and come here and ask that is totally cool.

Let's put it another way. What information could someone possible gain here without having begun reading a grammar book other than 'go read a grammar book'? What could they possibly contribute? What questions could they even ask?
>>
>>149996755
>save for maybe doing some anki for base vocab, but even that doesn't take 10% of the time you should spend reading if you ever want to get good

I'm going to comment that although this is basically true, phrasing it this way leads to some big misunderstandings. Even if you do all of Core6k before doing any reading whatsoever, it shouldn't take more than 300 hours total time in anki. Considering it takes a couple thousand hours to get good for reading, that means that even if you are an "anki addict" you will probably not spend more than 15% of your study time in anki by the time you get good.

If you have decent retention it just isn't possible to spend too much time in anki, because anki just won't give you enough cards to spend too much time in it. You can whine about people who do 1000 cards a day or something but those people probably even end up spending less total study time to get through their Core phase, and are much more comfortable reading after it.

Let's fix this. The definite guide to Japanese in two sentences:

If you can read, fucking read more.

I would, I'd have to edit it to remove personal information, so I'll just describe it instead.
- I stopped adding cards a while ago so I should actually be at a higher mature count now, something like 1500, if it were a shared deck.
- I still have retention under 80% because many of my cards are leeches, but my mature retention is 99%
- Right now I do something like 100 reps per day for this deck. All old leeches.

目覚める more literally means to awaken
also e.g. to have the scales fall from your eyes with regard to something
often used with に like 現実に目覚める
目覚める has a stronger literal image of waking up than 覚める which is more "awaken" in the sense of sobering up from something and is often used with から

Not really. Unlike that guy, I don't have trouble understanding japanese words that are explained with english terms.
>>
>>149998727
that doesn't really say much because english resources for learning japanese rarely go very far in explaining the grammar, and when they do you're no longer using english terms but japanese terms because english has no such thing as e.g. a "bound particle"

I wouldn't say english grammar is impossibly complex or anything, but there are still many seemingly foundational areas of the language in which even native speakers and sometimes native writers can't seem to get their acts together

like "that" and "which" in relative clauses for instance
or figuring out whether their indefinite pronouns are singular or plural

What's the difference?
The only anons who ever really did anything of note were the anons who did the original guides; the anon who put the cor and original djt site together; then the other anon who overhauled it all after it went abandoned and made the grammar site. It's basically fine to stay in a read only state as it is, it already covers everything a learner needs.
To be honest I don't really know why it isn't set up as an entirely offline archive with a mega link or something as the OP, so beginners download that and have everything they need at their fingertips. That is how it was put together originally, so anyone could grab it and use it. Having things centralised only makes it easier to target for takedowns.
Unless Japanese changes dramatically overnight it's pretty much a complete beginners kit as is.
