It's portrayed as some epic final boss fight with no pre-established rivalry. Ushijima is probably the lamest opponent in the manga so far as far as characterization goes. Character development that seems significant is neglected in favor of the status quo, more apparent in the training arc that happens after this match.

So the important stuff just feels like a waste of time in retrospect. Other matches usually have more emotional attachment to the outcome or the opponents but for being the longest match in the manga it was a lot of flash but no substance.

It might have been a little better if they took Oikawa's rivalry with Ushijima and gave it Karasuno 3rd years for more emotional impact. Then have Ushijima and Tendou acknowledge Tsukki's efforts during the match at the training camp instead of just ignoring him completely.

Tendou doesn't seem to be bothered by the fact he was bullied and he's not really vindictive, he just likes to tease people but that is pretty typical for lots of characters in haikyuu. He calls Hinata a monster because Ushijima is acting uncharacteristically hateful and he's trying to pin down the reason why.

And yeah Furudate says Tendou is his favorite character to draw because he's so expressive.
