No time loop, and NGE has nothing to with religion besides a few shallow name drops. It's not that it's badly done, the references just aren't DEEP or anything. The real meat of the show is the character interactions and their mental problems. It's all about individuals and how people differ and relate, and that's why the ending was the way it was and not whatever it is people wanted it to be.
