How do you do it /a/? Casual here, I've seen 200-something

How do you do it /a/?

Casual here, I've seen 200-something series now but it's already becoming difficult to distinguish between shows, they all just seem to mix together.
The only shows I can ever focus and recall are the ones I'm currently watching.
So how do you all do it?
>>
I'm just not retarded.
>>
>>149891261
We don't actually watch anime. We just post on /a/
>>
Take a break. It helps having a hobby other than anime.
Anime is still my main hobby.
>>
I don't think 200 makes you a casual. It makes you an enthusiast.

Going by what I see on my anime list, 200 series watched is probably the average.
>>
Mysql
>>
700+ here. You do get the same tropes over and over again, but there are so many anime per season these days that it's usually not a problem to pick some shows that are at least a bit different from last season's.
>>
Once you get over 200 I think you can safely say you aren't a casual anymore.

I certainly struggle to like, immediately bring to mind every series I've watched, but if one is specifically mentioned I can remember what it was about, and if someone says "That anime where the guy has a pink chainsaw" I can recall the specific show based on relatively non-core details like that.

Not everyone has an eidetic memory, and the overwhelming majority of anime as a whole is awful. Even of the tiny proportion that actually gets translated and subsequently watched by anyone is around 50% irredeemable garbage. If you tried to remember all of it you would go insane. I would say about 25% of what I've watched was largely unmemorable apart from one or two things, and half of that in turn is stuff I would literally prefer to forget watching.

I would say it helps not to be watching too many shows at once, have a small handful from the current season and bingewatch one older series at a time no more often than twice a week. I start to lose focus if I'm still watching more than 6 shows without concluding one before I start the next.

And >>149891295. I have /tg/ shit in the works, which tends to bring to mind and reinforce my memories of various shows without outright adding to the muddle of different anime.
>>

The ones who treat watching anime as some kind of game that unlocks achievements instead of something to have fun with.

In an attempt to appear wise and knowledgeable, they will even watch anime at increased speed.

>>
Sounds like you're watching anime for the sake of watching anime my friend. Try taking a break for a while.
>>
>>149892187
60% of human population has autism so it isn't that rare
>>
>>149892187
Watching anime at increased speed seems actually to be really common among many young people who mainly use youtube to watch anime. That's why many of them miss really obvious moments.
>>
>>149891261
There's a lot of good shit out there dude, just take it easy. Like others said, watching loads at the same time isn't a great idea if you really want to enjoy the,
>>
By having no life.
>>
>>149892187
I remember there was a thread about it about 2 years back and there was a *hideous* number of /a/ posters who did this. Tons of people who routinely watched shows at 150%, even up to 250% speed.

I experimented with watching Sidonia at 115% speed, but that was because everything is awfully slow in that show anyway, it slightly reduced the framerate issues that the show had, and its OP sounds better at that speed. I would never consider this to be a routine thing.
>>
Stop watching forgettable trash just to stroke your "i've seen 1000 series, i'm an anime expert" e-penis that know one cares about.
>>
I have a list, but I sometimes still have no idea what some show was even though I've apparently seen it. I watch anime normally, so nothing like watching it at increased speed or anything.

Overall I don't think the series I've forgotten are even worth remembering, so it's not really a problem. If you don't remember anything from the series you've seen in the past, then you obviously are watching nothing but crap.
>>
Forgetting things is also a side-effect of simply becoming older.
We're not even talking senile-old, simply that your brain starts categorizing entire years as unimportant and uneventful, which is why the older you get, you simply wonder how time flies by.
>>
>>149892392
This. At the end of the day, anime is entertainment, not a contest.
>>
I don't watch shitty shows that have no distinctive art style or narrative.
>>
>>149891996
a lot of people here actually keep track of watched series.
for me it has function of quick recall, the number of series watched is void since vast amount of it are movies, OVAs or shorts.
>>
I have completed 87 shows, but I have also dropped around 200 shows. Does the fact that I only finish shows that are above avarage, make me a casual?
>>
>>149892764
How are you so bad at judging whether you will like a show or not? Do you not even take a look at the genres?
>>
>>149892844
I usually pick out a batch of shows that seem interesting. If a show fails to impress me in 3-7 episodes, I drop it. And after that, I'm only left with above avarage shows to watch.
>>
>>149892943
Then that says more about your ability to determine what "seems interesting"

If after near 300 titles you can't have some semblance of your own taste, you either don't like anime or don't even know what you like
>>
>>149892117
Most streaming sites keep track of your anime count you fucking retard.

At this point you might as well finish it if it's 1-cour.
For most shows 1 episode is enough to tell if you want to watch it or not. The 3 episode thing is bullshit anyway.
Starting well and going to shit is common, but starting shit and ending well happens pretty much never, and if it happens /a/ will let you know.
>>
>>149893184

>>
>>149893265
>>149893324

>>
>>149893372
Or, just dropping it forever. If you're reaaly REALLY interested in the plot you could just read up on it
>>
>>149893336
You can read a manga while watching that anime. Or fill out your tax return form. Perhaps clip your finger and toe nails. Cook something to eat.
Stuff like that.

But those 100 minutes of pain will make those good anime seem even better.

Trust me.

>>
>>149891261

I sometimes get burnt out and don't watch anime for months

If you were willing to watch 7 episodes of a show, then it was interesting enough to watch it.
>>
>>149893523
Same.
>>
>>149892364
I do this only for filler in shows with several hundred episodes, simply because I only care about what's actually canon but don't want to miss something I might enjoy seeing. No one actually "watches" it like this, you just put it to half the screen and browse /a/ while watching it through your peripheral to get the gist of it
If it's less than a hundred then I don't
>>
>>149893579
I dropped YOI this week because it got way too gay for me.
>>
>>149893239
>Sunk cost fallacy
I think I have actually dropped a show around episode 11 out of 13. I have too many other things I could be doing to waste my time watching an anime I won't enjoy.
>>
>>149893438
I tried it this summer(Qualidea Code), but it didn't work. Most likely because I also watch a lot of shows that I consider really mediocre/average, but not bad enough for me to drop it and they make the good anime seem even better.

I've probably dropped more shows than I've watched. /a/ mocks me for having seen so few series, but a lot of that is because I'm very selective of what I watch.

>>
>>149891261

It's always better this way. You will never get the same experience backlogging your way through anime until you burn out and move on. Sharing a hobby with a group of like minded people will always be better than slogging through hours of something you don't give a shit about other than to post on /a/ about watching LOGH for the 4th time and having the thread die after 2 posts.
>>
>>149891261
Stop watching anime, go to the gym, and become a functional member of society.

Then become an alcoholic, lose your job, gain 30 pounds, and move back into your parents' house.
>>
>>149893705
>deciding that you don't like something at episode 11
I mean, fine, but watching 11 episodes shouldn't happen in the first place.
>>
>>149892364
I actually sped up a tiny bit while I was watching HxH. I only did it for about 1 minute and only during one of the slower parts in Heavens Arena. I don't know how anyone could actually watch any show at an increased speed.
>>
>>149893730
Kill yourself
>>
>>149892392
I watch some shows solely so I can fap to the characters. I'm not sure if it's worth it.
>>
>>149891261
Yeah, 200 shows is a bit much to call yourself a casual anymore. I've only watch around 600 anime series myself but I've considered myself an otaku for a pretty long time.

I think the distinction casual/otaku is more a matter of how well you understand the medium and its industry, how passionate you are about it, and how you share the values of its community (for what that means, /a/ isn't even a faithful representation of what otaku are, it's itself just a community among others).

About your questions:
- stop binge-watching
- look for more interesting shows that will leave a strong impression on you rather than watching another shitty battle-harem (don't ask here, /a/ doesn't do recommendations)

Then, maybe you were gifted with a shitty memory, but here I can't help you.
>>
>>149891261
Just watch airing shows.
>>
>>149893978
Wouldn't it be better to fap to porn doujins of those characters?

>>149892987

>>
>>149893109
Literally any which isn't borderline retarded.
Holy fuck there are even extremly casual sites which give you fucking Naruto ninja titles according to your watched episode count.
>>
>>149894211
So the more anime you watch, the shittier recommendations are unlocked?
>>
>>149894236
Well it doesn't fuck your up recommendations but your profile. You're called Ninjamaster and shit like that. And when you get passed the Naruto titles you get titles like Otaku no Senpai and shit like that....

They basically fucked up a decent simple feature with these shitty rankings.
>>
Use some website for tracking only what you watched, like: MAL, Hummingbird, AniList etc. or even Notepad...
>>
>>149894369
Thus, the activity of watching anime has become like a shitty video game with title achievements.
>>
>>149893239
There were plenty of shows that when I saw the first episode I thought that the show was shit and wanted to drop it but decided not to because of the 3 episode rule. And after watching those additional 2 episodes I saw that it was actually good/worth watching and completed it whole.

This.
>>
>>149891261
I've seen around 300 anime, but only 150 of them are TV anime, and many of them are sequels, so I'd still consider myself a casual. I have large gaps in anime to watch, stuff that is important that I haven't seen. You can't say you are hardcore unless you have seen some of the less mainstream stuff from the early 2000s. Stuff like Saikano, and Arjuna which I just started on. If you don't have a number of these shows, you are still pretty casual.
>>
>>149900014
You're not a casual if you have watched 300 anime. You don't have to be an oldfag with over 2000 anime watched to be considered an anime fan. But you're surely in the lower range here on /a/.
And it's not a contest, once you have a minimal required knowledge it's more a matter of how you feel towards anime.

Casual means someone who have watched a few dozen shows, read the popular manga, thinks everything Ghibli made is a masterpiece and owns only Hatsune Miku or SnK merchandise, that kind of things.
>>
I started to get into anime a few years ago and started using myanimelist to keep track and get recommendations and opinions on anime. I have only seen 74 so far but I remember all I have watched pretty clearly. I made sure before picking each other I liked the storyline and read reviews on how they would be. I think that might be the best way to go about it. Pick ones you might really enjoy and you might be able to remember them. It also helps to watch certain ones around holidays or your favorite times of the year. I can fondly remember certain anime's just be thinking of memories of around a holiday or time period. This also goes for movies and tv shows too.
>>
Why are some people so intimidated by people who keep track of the general amount of anime they've seen? I don't keep track of the exact number but because I have a natural tendency towards OCD it isn't that hard to remember about how many series I've seen. Yeah, I lost track of the exact number long ago, but I have a rough idea. It's not that hard or obsessive, so there's no reason for anyone to get triggered by someone else saying "I've seen about 200 anime" unless they are in fact a newfag who doesn't like to feel inferior.
>>
>>149901877
I don't get either why some people get triggered by this. I use MAL because I like to watch some series at a really slow pace of a few episodes a month. And I tend to drop some series only to get back to it later.
I wouldn't be able to keep track of what is the last episode I watched for these series without using MAL or something similar.
>>
>>149902265
Same. If I didn't use a list site I would have to write down what I am watching just to remember.
>>
>>149891261
There are less than 100 anime actually worth watching
>>
>>149904558
It depends. If you limit yourself to really good stuff, maybe. But there are many anime that explore some interesting things, and are still pretty good. If you want to watch all the interesting anime that's also enjoyable, 100 anime may not be enough.
>>
>>149904558
