Slaine did nothing and wrong and deserved better. Pretty much the only likeable character in the whole series.

If nothing else, it was interesting to watch a mecha MC that doesn't win battles by pure YAMATO DAMASHI but with calculations and planning. And the aspect of inferior old mechs going up against god mode ones and winning was a rare pleasure.

But Saaz liked Slaine. He was alone after his wife died and had no successor or family + he already liked Slaine and remembered his father well. Then Slaine saved his life in episode 12 and chose to fight for Vers if it's necessary to save the princess. They both knew Saaz probably wouldn't live for much longer so I'd say Slaine had pretty good chances.

it takes a remarkable amount of talent to make a show so devoid of likable characters, with a completely nonsensical plot, with utterly garbage 'fights', with horrendous visual direction, and with nearly zero redeeming qualities whatsoever.

The last episode of S1 was the only thing worthwhile because it was basically just a giant 'fuck this shit fuck everything' moment that immediately got undone by the first episode of the second season. So even that sucks in retrospect.

It's got good/real military structure and a very well done feudal system. If you don't like it for the "mindless action movie" feel, watch it for the military/feudal system.

I recognize this anime is pretty shit but its still one of my faves.

They dropped the ball hard going from S1 to S2, not just because every single person who received a fatal wound survived but because of how most of the cast ended up being completely irrelevant.

What was particularly galling was the way Inaho was used. In the first season, it's acceptable that he gets results against the Orbital Knights due to the fact that the invasion has just begun and only a handful of people on either side have actual combat experience.

Fast forward to the second season, and the status quo hasn't changed at all--every damn person in the cast is still completely powerless and has no idea about even the basics of taking on the Martians if Inaho isn't around to tell them to use artillery. This is in spite of the fact that all of the main cast by that point have enough experience to be NCOs/senior officers and that the Earth forces as a whole should be full of up-and-comers like Inaho who've emerged from obscurity due to the ability to produce results.

Between this and how the show never introduced a credulous rival to Inaho on the battlefield (Slaine only fights him twice over the whole series and never gets the upper hand) made for a pretty damn boring and disappointing show for anyone who doesn't fancy self-inserting as an autist who has an obsession with eggs.

The ending was also horrible, but that's a different matter.

How could anyone not like A/Z?

Good OST, OK visuals, had promise but ended up going downhill really fucking fast. Eggs never really got much development, along with most, if not all characters actually, PTSD guy was pointless as a character, Slaine went full autist in S2, the girl who wanted the egg got shafted, and a ton of other shit. It was fun to watch it get worse and worse every week, but overall pretty eh.
