He jobbed because the whole point of Naruto was that hard work by itself doesn't mean anything. It doesn't matter how hard you work, if you don't have a special bloodline, or a Sharingan, or a tailed beast trapped inside of you or the reincarnated soul of a space alien, your hard work won't make a difference once the chips are down.

If it's any consolation his teacher was the closest anyone got to killing Madara, not even Naruto or Sasuke did as much damage to him as Gai did.

to gaara? that was a fight he shouldn't have been able to win. Gaara was a monster child that didn't even have to fully transform to kill several fully trained ninja in his village. He had shittons of protection and Lee came in with ONLY physical ability which simply is not the best approach for dealing with him since he has sand armor to deal with.

Sasuke had to match lee's speed and physical power and THEN use a top level move designed for piercing targets just to damage him and even then, all he did was poke him in the shoulder.

Naruto only won because Sasuke drained a lot of his energy and Naruto tapped into Kurama's energy AFTER using that giant toad to battle against Gaara at his maximum power.

him losing to Gaara and Boneboy didn't hurt people's opinions of him, though. The fight with Gaara actually elevated him, I'd say. He's still one of the most popular characters, even got his own spinoff.

The early episodes with Zabuza and the theme of hard work beats all were so good. Kishi should've tried to end it early on a high note somehow instead of letting it become what it is now
