Why don't more current anime watchers take a look at older shows, especially with how good they can look on BD remasters?
>>
>>149829376

>b-b-but it's not airing, I can't blog about that on social media
>the art looks icky, digital is way better
>there is no Jewtube review made by my favourite Jewtuber person about this
>you can't make good memes from these
>leddit doesn't have a thread about this, so it must suck

A few reasons.
>>
>>149829614
It frightens me that these may be real responses of some people.

Now have a picture of this beautiful digital anime they love
>>
Every time I try to watch an older show for the sake of watching an older show I get a little bit of satisfaction from the clear evidence that like with all other media, people blinded by nostalgia are just that, blinded.
>>
>>149829376
>Why don't more current anime watchers take a look at older shows,
You don't even know how many do. Why are you complaining?

The reason why you get so little discussion of old shows is because /a/ is decidedly forward looking, always checking out the newest trends and leaving shows behind left like last season's waifu. Elsewhere you have a) the casuals who don't yet know about most anime and just go with what they learned about through aggressive advertising and who'll drop anime before they even begin to understand it and b) shit communities more concerned with the social game than with anime.
Old shows are still watched, but there is just no good base for discussing them.

For me it's usually the sound. It just doesn't sound crisp and can be a turnoff. I have a hard time starting older shows because of this. Of course the animation quality can be a factor too.

I've watched LotGH and GTO and had no problems with them. It's just picking up the show that's hard because i have to change my mindset so much from modern anime.

So far all I watch is old 80s and 90s scifi shit, because that is my fucking bag.

Good thing they made fucking heaps of that shit back then.
>>
>>149829863
Don't use emoticons on /a/.
>>
>>149829785
As someone who watches 80s and 90s stuff, how can I be blinded by nostalgia for anime I never watched when it aired or never even knew existed? I didn't start watching animu until 2001, which was after the digital era had already begun, but a lot of old stuff looks great. It just depends on the budget and production team.

This. Try watching two 80s anime with an urban setting and distinguishing any aspect of their sound production apart, including soundtrack.

Older shows are only good for certain genres. Modern anime has come close to perfecting the cute girls doing cute things genre, which as we all know is the apex of anime.

Did people in the 80s call each other scififags, fantasyfags and mechfags rather than yurifags, fujoshits and haremfags?

No, too few titles. So it was Yamato people, Bubblegum Crisis fans, Ranma people, etc.

Everyone I know refuses to dig deeper for more shows once they watch everything on there unless they're recommended to them but even then, they have to have premises that appeal to them in a way Western media does, otherwise they dismiss it as bad. I recommended Giant Gorg, among other things, to a guy bitching about how anime only revolves around fanservice, and he watched the opening and started bitching about how unrealistic and unsafe it was that the protagonist was riding on Gorg's head. /blog

I'm not interested in old anime anymore, since I watched it years ago. Now I just wanna see something new.
My tastes changes though, so perhaps in a few years, I might on a whim decide to watch some older anime show I haven't seen yet for a genre that I'm currently interested.

I find it's a shallow reason to dislike or dismiss something. For example, that "modern day cute girl shit" can be done poorly or well just like literally any other kind of show/movie and you could enjoy or even love a show you'd categorize as "modern day cute girl shit" at a glance.

This isn't to paint something as cute girl shit to troll it on /a/. It's for my own deciding purposes with what to watch. 99% of the time someone's going to know cute girl shit when they're looking at its premise

New anime is bad. The medium has turned to shit to such an extent that the only value new anime has is its illusion of freshness to newfags, which is worthless for fans who have seen the same tired tropes done better in other series.
>>
>>149845966
New anime does the same old tropes better than the old shows did, because those concepts have been refined over the years, and it packages them in a much more visually appealing package. Therefore, in a modern context, old anime will always be inferior and worthless for anything but nostalgia.

When /a/ talks about something that's finished it's because the complete narrative is still interesting enough all these years later.

As much as I love old ova art the vast majority of them are incomplete adaptations (or rushed butchering) of some other source material. That doesn't leave you a lot to talk about. Plus there's just way less anime until the 90s ushers in the production committee era at the end of the cel times.

So for every LotGH out there there's three Venus Wars. Makes it hard to have anything to say.
>>
>>149846115
Refining tropes doesn't exist. You bank on an illusory progress when not everything gets better for building on the tropes of past works and much can become considerably worse as the urge to top past works with ever more stuffed into one show leads to trainwrecks like Valvrave and Cross Ange.
>>
>>149829376
The new will always dominate today's conversation, especially nowadays where it's easier than ever to watch and discuss new anime as soon as they air. Doesn't mean folks aren't watching old anime, just means they aren't able to achieve that level of real-time communal experience.

Renaissance was in many ways step back from the achievements of the middle ages. It was the reason Latin died as a language. It's the main reason for witch trials. It's why the church started opposing science.
I'm not going to say it was all around shit. But in many ways it was.

It was a step back insofar as the church stopped supporting the sciences, or in that people suddenly started burning witches.
A lot of knowledge was also lost when the renaissance elite decided that nothing that happened in the middle ages could have had any value, leading them to discard many scientific scriptures. Fortunately by that time the press had already been invented, so the loss wasn't catastrophic, but a lot of knowledge was simply LOST.

>>
>>149852972
I'm not the same guy. Take a look at the unique IPs.

I already know you're an idiot when you claim some degrees of necessary consequence of historical events. Not to mention some bombastic, overly-simplified claims that all related to the whole renaissance period. The lack of clear historiography doesn't help too. Without proper method, you can just cherry-pick and claim stupid things ad infinitum until you get 'the last reply standing' medal left on this thread.
>>
>>149853256
>I'm not the same guy.
irrelevant when you defend a stupid position.

You can complain about cherry picking all you want. But it seems you have no arguments. None. At least try to argue in favor of the rediscovery of the antique world and the discarding of so much that happened in in between Rome's fall and some guy's idea when the world started turning again. The depreciation of the time period is so strong, we still have no name for it that doesn't reflect it.
When has ignorance ever been a good thing?

There's still the occasional anime that tries to do storytelling just like many of those older shows. Not every anime is going full tilt to try to sell merchandise to otaku or using the low road of tits and ass to market its merchandise.

Occult Nine is this fall 2016 anime season's stand out for story telling. But it lacks the positive raves of those fans who look primarily for lots of miniskirts and pantsu in choosing which bluray to buy.
