The BL industry is set up like hentai. There is very little way of making interesting stories. I do think that the doujinshi circuit did help the industry art- and story-wise but they are out there making money. Only if you were a big shot in the genre, you can try to go a non-romance overarching story which make fujobaiting series so popular but your next volume depends on the sales of your last one so everything needs to be wrapped up in a single volume.
