I was able to follow the plot just fine after some confusion through the first few episodes when I had no idea what the fuck a psycho frame was or what a newtype is, or what the one year war was.

Something about the original just seems unappealing to me, the only reason I started watching Reconguista in G was because the character designs were done by the guy that did the character designs for Eureka Seven.

I understand why you'd find it unappealing but you really should give it a shot, there's a reason it's such a huge classic.

Also ignore anyone that says ZZ is bad and that you should skip it, it's actually pretty great even if you're not the type to like the first 15 or so episodes because of the new tone.

How much of a problem is the stock footage?
It's one of those things that takes me right out of the experience when I notice it. For example in Eureka Seven they use stock footage of the scub corals way too much over the course of the series, they even use it in the movie too.

Unicorn is one of the series with more backstory, if you don't want begin with the original try one of the alternate universe. Seed or 00 are good places to start.

Every other Gundam Series that is not in UC timeline, you moron.
Almost all Gundam series have their own setting, except for those that are in UC timeline and Seed Destiny, which is a sequel to Seed.
