You say not to post Ghibli, but then you post a movie by another big studio that is loved by millions?

Questionable.

A real underrated movie is Happy Birthday: Inochi Kagayaku Toki.
>>
>>149764764
Not nearly as big as Ghibli and I just say that because everyone knows Ghibli movies, theyre mainstream as fuck. You'd be surprised how many plebs on this board haven't even heard of The Wings of Honneamise let alone have seen it.

I'll check it out even though it looks depressing as fuck
>>

Never seen someone else mention the retard girl movie on /a/ besides me.

I would probably go Nijiiro Hotaru, Gauche the Cellist, Junkers Come Here, Shin-Chan Adult Empire underrated in western anime fanbase.

This is actually underrated. Especially consider the popularity of GitS, with this being comparatively unknown despite the same director.

Memories Magnetic Rose. It is one of three 40 minute mini-movies in the Memories set. They are all well animated, Cannon Fodder in particular is very unique and experimental, but ultimately only Magnetic Rose is a true classic.

A lot of these don't strike me as obscure enough to be underrated. Admittedly it is difficult to come up with obscure anime films that have worth but things like Honneamise, Magnetic Rose, Angels Egg, Dead Leaves and TIme of Eve just seem too obvious.

>>149765541
I really quite liked it too actually whilst recognising it for the same, something about the fantasy world bit and the kinds of designs it involved was just really interesting to me a whole kind of lost culture type thing.

Gotta be Ghibli for me. I don't think people appreciate Spirited Away as they really should. It's a masterpiece and a hidden gem desu

I don't think a lot of those early Toei films are underrated (for the most part not rated at all) they are interesting and enjoyable and more people should watch them but mostly quite flawed. Definitely obscure for your average /a/ poster though.

I wonder if it ever would have been finished if they let Ohira make the entire film instead of swapping him out for Sato. 6 months to make 3 minutes was a bit much.
>>
>>149766204
I think there are a lot of people on this board who are open to world animation. Not everyone of course, but there's a definite interest that I've seen from time to time. I think a lot of the early Toei Doga films are great and worth watching flaws and all, but in my opinion only Orochi and Horus are genuinely fantastic.

>>149766253
Shashinkan and Midoriko, and yes, "what the fuck" is the correct reaction.
>>
>>149766029

This is The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon, right? Kind of hated this movie because the main character was absolutely terrible. Animation was solid though.

>>149766131

Shashinkan is wonderful though.
>>
>>149766374
Terrible how? I'd not say he's a good character or anything but he didn't bring the movie down for me. I love classic adventure stories, and the set pieces for this movie were fantastic. So many great scenes, I remember the first time I watched it I kept rewinding and watching certain parts over and over. Awesome soundtrack too.
>>
>>149766372
They are definitely some of the better ones and obviously Horus is an important work in the development of Japanese animation. I did say "most" not everybody so maybe someone will take a look at it yeah.

>>149766374

I can agree that it had a lot of cool parts all throughout it, but the kid was such a brat the entire time, I couldn't handle it. He was just a major dick to every single character in the story. Sadly, it did ruin the movie for me. Thinking about it, maybe that's really the only thing I disliked about it, mostly.

>>149766548

The one that's a part of the Genocidal Organ trilogy? I watched it with a friend a month or two ago. We were both pretty disappointed. It was like a cross between Psycho-Pass and Ghost in the Shell that wasn't as cool or as interesting as either. Sadness.

Good choice right here. Both a strong emotional and rational take on what it means to be an intelligent and independent entity worthy of recognition. I'd argue the bots were perhaps too human, especially the older models, but still one of my favorites.
>>
>>149765340
Garakowa is obscure? I wasn't checking the boards at all when it came out so I wouldn't know.

It was very good but too much a product of it's time, that is, trying a little too hard at making an "intricated" storyline and otaku-pandering.

I'd still recommend it over 90% of the TV shows that aired this year.
>>
Whatever happen to that sakuga as hell Toyota sponsored movie that never got released? Like year or so back and the characters were fairly simplied and it had killer color schemes.

Also Cencoroll 2

Magnetic Rose is amazing but it isn't underrated

Cannon Fodder was cliche

Stink Bomb is underrated and it was really funny.
I couldn't stop laughing, the animation was top notch, the music kick ass and the action was over the top and ridiculous

So, Stink Bomb is my favourite anime movie (short) because I'm not pretentious to only like serious and gloomy shit

The Yoko Kanno ED and lack of continuation drives that home.

>>149767072
It's surreal that GitS was actually a step down for Oshii after Patlabor 2. I guess the core messages of both films just have different lasting impacts, Patlabor's being more relevant and prescient.

Odin and Genma Taisen are not other underrated, they're reviled. But I think both films are worth checking out for how off the wall they wall they get and because they're the epitome of blowing a ton of money on a project.
>>
>>149773445

I love it, but it's one of those button pushers for me that I can totally understand why others wouldn't get. It follows that first book like 1:1 but without a continuation it just kind of sits there as nothing but an advertisement (Bastard!!, Please Save My Earth, The Weathering Continent) Too many movies and OVAs of that era did the same thing and it's really depressing knowing that some of them will never be picked back up. Or worse, if they are they'll get Arakawaface making them unwatchable.

I dunno, was the new Arslan worth it? I just think it looks hideous.
