I just watched the Cobra first movie. This is fucking amazing. I watched the series first and liked the direction (Dezaki shines the most in Cobra imo), but the movie is another fucking level. Too bad I don't really like overall Cobra's character designs, stories or Cobra himself, but there were nice moments though.

Gotta watch the Golgo movie now.
>>
All the 90s D&D campaign animes.

Rune Soldier, Slayers, Record of Lodoss War, El Hazard

It's bad. Dezaki really isn't a great director.

I got the ROV BD to replace the Live Evil rip I had and my GOD it looks amazing, I already have the Cobra one and I was going to watch that one soon.

Also I really recommend Mainichi ga Nichiyoubi if you're into 80s police comedy shows, not to mention the main character and her love interest have good chemistry together. Only problem is that is was only six episodes.

Grabbed everything in pic related for about $30. The Slayers sets are factory sealed.

The El Hazard styff is missing one tape each, but I figure filling in the gaps can't be too hard.

Recently I have watched Perrine Monogatari and... it was OK. The first half dragged, but the second half is rewarding. One of the major problems is the production. You can notice how the animation isn´t good. This usually wouldn´t affect non-action stories, but in a drama at least work on the facial expressions. It is frustrating that Perrine only has two expressions: pokerface and slightly surprised.
>>
>>149744149
Now that's some shit taste. Obviously one shouldn't expect a masterpiece but it's a nice 80's action flick. One of my favorite movies ever.

>>149744043
I didn't like the movie very much, mostly because of the different VA for Cobra. Golgo movie is great.

>>149744165
Rose of Versailles is the greatest anime ever.

>>149748288

Damn right it is, Oscar cemented my love of handsome women.

So when it comes to cuteness and sexiness why does retro anime manage to make it look more authentic than modern day series? There's something about it which has a genuine touch.

I am watching The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Ranma 1/2, Dominion Tank Police, and You're Under Arrest mainly.

Gall Force, Project A-ko, Megazone, The Slayers OVAs/Movies

>>
>>149748413

Just wanted to say Rose of Versailles is no where near as good as people say. 3/4 of it is no better than a shitty day time soap opera. It has some great moments sure like Rosalie confronting her mother, Her sister jumping off the roof, and Oscar/Fersen's first time together.

Most of it is just repetitious melodrama for 14 year old girls though.

>RoV is melodramatic
I've never understood this meme.

The manga can be overly dramatic at points, but the drama in the show is executed really well. It never beats you over the head with the point, and the level of drama always makes sense in the context of the situation.

RoV is romantic in the classical sense, but I wouldn't say melodramatic.

I've been watching the original Dragon Ball series. It's not perfect but I think it's fun, which is a pleasant surprise, I saw DBZ way back and I never really cared for it. Goku is a lot more likable as a kid for some reason too. Maybe it's his innocence?

>turn it into DBZ
Isn't that just a Toei thing?
The contents of the original DB anime and DBZ are both just the whole "Dragon Ball" manga.

Unless you meant the way the series became, it seems to have had a tone shift at that point. Dragon Ball doesn't seem to take itself as seriously as I remember Z taking itself.
>>
>>149768167

DB was more about the world, and funny goofy characters, the kind of creativity toriyama is best at, watch Dr. Slump. Also the Martial Arts Tournaments were incredible good, i always loved how wacky the fighters could be, and really liked what even fucking Yamsha did to win his battles.

DBZ is about fucking power levels, the world exploring and the look out for the dragon balls became a joke, The martial arts tournaments died.

Which older anime series do you think have benefitted well from receiving a BD releae? Rose of Versailes looks awesome and from what I've seen so far since I'm waiting for EG to release the last episode, Ideon looks magnificent. Really blows the old /m/subs release out of the water.
>>
>>149775887

Most anything on 35mm that hasn't been DVNR'd or mixed with digital elements. It's great what we've been getting out of the 16mm TV shows as well.

Outlaw Star has one of the best remasters to date. It's not like the previous DVD masters were so terrible, but it's just an impeccable BluRay. Lodoss' BD release was probably THE most dramatic as far as having the old composite master to the new HD digital. I don't think we're gonna see something that dynamic again aside from maybe Odin, They Were 11, Plastic Little, or Lemnear. The current masters for all of those are 90s era.

>>149743333

Been watching some older anime again lately since current anime absolutely refuses to have premises and characters that don't just suck outright. Fang of The Sun Dougram is fascinating for a show that aired in 1981 with how it's young male protagonist isn't just an annoying shit. Idealist yes, annoying, not at all really. It also takes like 7 episodes for the title robot to even show up and even then Casshim doesn't get to pilot it right away, it has to be recaptured first. Just really interesting stuff if a little rough on animation but I'll take it gladly over yet another generic light novel otaku's doing otaku things show or yuri show or whatever the fuck is going on with current TV anime that doesn't look interesting at all.
>>
>>149777045

I think you'd like Blue Comet SPT Layzner, first half feels a little repetitive but second half is amazing. Not to mention you've got Oberstein as the main villain.
>>
>>149744043

I watched one of them a couple years ago and I swear the only scene I remember from it anymore is the trippy rug room scene in the one Amazon chicks place. Dezaki was something else though, shame his legacy and style is now in the hands of someone as uninspired and lazy as Akiyuki Shinbo though really it barely resembles it anymore these days anyway either
>>
>>149752023

Wasn't the J9 franchise supposed to be getting a new entry or has that been cancelled in favor of adapting more LN trash?
>>
>>149756345

Anime got disgustingly fucking lazy with letting fanservice and generic tropey character personalities become the guiding premise of most shows with the pretense of plot and things actually happening to the cast that mean something a distant priority. I really fucking miss actual storytelling in anime, there really is no fucking point to having 30 new series every season if absolutely nothing fresh or interesting is ever going to happen in 99% of them and they're all just going to have the same voice casts, theme songs and slipshod nonsensical writing.
>>
>>149777045
Dougram is the best
>>
>>149777201

Plus the overabundance of choice can just making you want even want to bother with checking out new shows.
>>
>>149777201

Speaking as a fan of anime for about 20 years but who has barely watched anything in the last 3 or so I used to find anime a reasonably diverse and unique medium albeit with some pitfalls where you could find premises and what not that really couldn't be done anywhere else but with animation. Nowadays most anime just seems to have a live action component that far outstrips it in technical merits and fundamentals anyway and I just find most of it annoying more than anything and at worst outright intolerable.

It really starts with just how bad the cast of your average anime has become and I think it has a lot to do with how things just seem to get made to plug a specific voice actor and sell some of their music for the production committee. They really just aren't approaching any of this stuff as actually involving making entertaining shows with characters worth giving a shit about in the first place and then worrying about the merchandise anymore at all making the shows just feel like pure hollow pretense. Even then I still don't understand why the average cast of a given show has to be all but intolerable to watch for any extended length of time almost as a rule in 2016
>>
>>149777081

I have been watching it but left off on the cliffhanger end of the first arc about a year ago. Got distracted by some IRL stuff and haven't really been watching all that much anime lately period for obvious reasons
>>
>>149759876
>it's very obviously a kid's show
whoa no way
>>
>>149777255

Lots of "choice" doesn't really mean much when most of what I seem to have to pick from in a given season is LN stuff with annoying characters and stupid or done to death every season premises and/or yuri/yaoi material which just doesn't interest me. If anime ever plans on getting moderately serious with running actual shows for more than just fringe otaku groups again then yeah it'll be worth paying a little more attention but I haven't seen any sign of that happening in years and if anything the things that suck about anime lately are starting to bleed more and more into other sectors of the Japanese entertainment industry and make them less fun too. Japan just really seems to have a one-dimensional outlook now when it comes to virtually all of it's entertainment sectors that is all but the exact opposite of how it used to approach things in decades prior. It's like the country has just lost any sort of creative drive or ambition beyond the purely commercial.
>>
How is the black jack movie?
>>
Honestly the problem with current anime can be summed up as Toho are the only ones taking it even remotely seriously as anything other than a commercial medium in their production approach anymore. Surprisingly they've actually been fairly well rewarded for it this year but I'm sure the rest of the industry is blind to their successes and the reasons why.
>>
>>149750121
>>149744272

>>
>>149777451

I think it is because anime is very limited to what you can do, creative enough yes, this is why manga is the better medium because you can do a lot more without relying on things like voice actors to sell.
