Pic related. Being the author's self insert sucks. I like his character trope but the past few chapters have pushed him into borderline Gary Stu territory. Not so much with his personality but with the events that have transpired. Asspulls abundance. I still have hope that Isayama will stop sucking so much cock long enough to write Armin as a balanced character who doesn't have a radius of retardism that affects all characters nearby.

Also, if he could go one chapter without saying "UMI DA" that'd be real great. I've gained an alcohol addiction thanks to taking a swig every time he says it.

Armin is not a Gary Stu by any means. He has plenty of flaws that have had serious consequences. He's easily frightened, breaks down under pressure, has somewhat of a martyr complex that removes any sort of logic in him when it comes up (he wants to be useful so badly he'll burn himself alive in hopes that it was useful), though he's of decent strength he has shit stamina and can't into 3DMG, and Armin lacks confidence in himself. Not as much as he used to, but that doubt is still well planted within him.

To be a Gary Stu, you can't have any of that. There is something called a reverse-Gary Stu which is where a character has zero redeeming qualities, which he doesn't fit into either. He's smart ("smart"), selfless, idealistic, kindhearted, gentle, usually rational, brave as fuck, can make hard decisions if he must (i.e. shooting that woman in the face) and isn't afraid to show his emotions.

If you want an in-universe example of a reverse Gary Stu, look at Eren. He's not quite there as he isn't an asshole but goddamn he makes it hard to like him when he's so fucking mentally ill.

Yes I do think it was an asspull for him to survive having his skin melted off and then falling 250ft back-first onto a house, BUT what's done is done and we can't change that.

As for his aura of retardation, remember that a character is only as smart as the author. He states the obvious and other characters applaud him for that. I hate that about Isayama's writing, but I don't blame it on Armin. Also, the one time he did say something unique and smart and not obvious, it was treated as a joke.

Finally, he's mentioned MUH OCEAN like no more than 5 times in the entire series, give him a break. Only 3 times I can actually recall. Eren mentioning it to Levi doesn't count.
