Will I really get better at listening if I just keep watching stuff even though I'm not really understanding much at all? Should I be getting more vocab or reading more before this? I would say I am pretty proficient at reading and have about 5k words in anki but have a really hard time understanding any normal spoken Japanese or TV shows. Anime for the most part is fine though.

Should I just keep listening to heaps of stuff? I don't want to feel like I'm wasting my time if doing all this listening won't give results.
>>
>>149704055

If i were to write kanji it would be easier having done this radical deck first
the stroke orders kinda have a nice pattern that feels good
after you get the general order then writing more of them doesnt really feel like more effort or time
>>
It'll take at least 2,000 hours to approach the level of google translate.

Do you honestly think that google will be sitting idle during those 2,000 hours? No. By the time you reach the current google translate level, it'll have increased its accuracy even more, requiring an extra 1,000 hours on your part and so on.

You're never going to catch up. You might as well enjoy your free time instead of slaving away to learn a language which will soon be replaced by a phone app.

I never got the mindset, to be honest, despite it being expressed a fair bit on /a/ over the years.
Do you want to learn Japanese or do you want to read X in a language you already know?
The idea of reading the things I love reading in Japanese, in English, sounds fucking disgusting. A language is more than the sum of it's parts and while you may be able to "translate" a certain level of meaning, you'll never be able to translate the cultural context which gives the language a sense of value to and from the native speakers/users.
Imagine trying to "translate" pic related, especially the final panel on the bottom left, without taking away from a character trait which makes 京子 so amusing?
Such high level AI translation might be fine for general international business but fuck that idea for creative writing. It would be boiling all drawing and painting styles into a singular form.

>>149704446
>how do I get my anki learning drive back?
Got a timer of some sort? Open up Anki and set the timer up to 10 minutes. Force yourself to spend the entire time minutes without any other distractions entirely on Anki. Do that a couple of times over the next hour or so and before you know it you'll likely be more than on your way to have being both caught up and starting to get used to it again.

How can you stand to use biros? I find japanese writing has way too much lifting off from the paper for them to work properly, by the time the ink starts flowing your stroke is almost finished. Even if the ink manages to come out you have to press very hard as well, which makes those kanji with lots of little dots and dashes extra painful.
>>
>>149711461
圃 isn't んぼ
田圃 is たんぼ

You can't necessarily break them up like that.

Look at 煙草. You can't just split that up into たば and こ (or た and ばこ).
>>
>>149711461
That doesn't start with ん

>>
>>149711560
Can't go wrong with Bic, rarely have any problems with ink flow.
It's better than using felt tipped pens, the moment that shit touches the paper, there is already an ink blot on the spot.

Ideally one would use fudepen, but ballpoint is the cheap solution.

But hey, what is the difference between drawing kanji and drawing the roman alphabet? There is a lot of lifting if you don't write using cursive, I've been doing that all my life.
>>
>>149711620
The 圃 is just ホ and the 田 is たん, writing it as 田んぼ is just a weird variation, I guess because 田 is usually read as just た
>>
>>149711663
>I guess because 田 is usually read as just た
Yeah, I guess this coupled with the fact that 圃 is hardly ever used would explain it. Thanks.
>>
>>149711649
You should at least to be able to do a basic kind of cursive. Didn't they teach you anything like that at school?
The main problem is that biros expect your pen to be in contact with the paper for much longer as they are with roman letters and most other alphabets, whereas kanji expect you to lay down a rapid fire of little dots and squiggles that can easily suck all the ink off the ball without rolling it along. If you write big enough though I guess it wouldn't be a problem. In fact, if you're writing into that giant inky mass anyway then how would you even know if the ink wasn't flowing? You might as well be writing with a cocktail stick.

Hi guys,

I'm very concerned about the current state of the DJT IRC channel. Over the last few months, the channel has become very desolate, with only about 50 inactive lurkers remaining. At its peak, the used to have over 200 users in there engaging in regular conversion and fun Japanese banter. I can't even remember when I last saw anyone talking in there.

Please, I appeal to you. Let's save our haven on the internet. Let's bring back the glory days of old. Let's make the channel great again. The future of the channel really lies in your hands. In everyone's hands.

There are a bunch of benefits of using KD over RTK

-Lists vocab that use the kanji and shows how the kanji influences the meaning
-Shows what particles are used with what vocab and what situations they're used in
-Details how similar kanji and vocab have different nuances
-Has tags to indicate how some kanji and vocab have different usage rules
-Has more consistent radicals than RTK has
-Has more accurate english keywords
-Has less obscure kanji than RTK has
-Uses more modern language
-Includes readings and indicates how common they are (although sometimes he's completely wrong)
-Incorporates the readings into his mnemonics alongside the meaning and radicals
-Has arguably better mnemonics in general, even if you want to make the argument "he used a rude word!!"

So basically according to you, simply because KD or KKLC have more or less everything already built in they're strictly better than RTK; in other words, they take up one Firefox tab instead of 3 or so. That's backward thinking and if you can't understand why you should abstain from trying to teach others.

BEWARE OF MINING FROM GAMES.

Because of the limitations of 8-bit gaming fonts, they simplified a lot of kanji, reducing their stroke count. These forms appear only in RPGs and whatnot.

It wasn't until I had already mined around 600 kanji that I noticed the difference and had to start over.

People seem to love Genki a lot. Even though I don't.

If you are having problems retaining, then just take it easy and make sure you build a grammar deck where you steadily introduce the key points you learned.

Basic grammar is more important than hugely spreading your vocabulary right now, so just take it easy and make sure you understand shit.

Alternatively you can just not give a shit about anything and just go read till you eventually understand. Which is a shit approach for someone who doesn't have basic grammar in my opinion.
>>
I know that I'm most certainly overthinking it, but is it okay that after a month and a half of japanese I can't comprehend anything past 4 word sentences? It is either way too fast or maybe it's because of an insufficient vocabulary. It is important to mention that by a month and a half I mean it fully, like I know over 200 kanji and somewhere over 500 words...i've never counted the words. Anyway, it may be just that I expect too much out of my own capabilities, but is this like a too slow progress I'm making? I can understand shit like 新世界の神だ!when Light says it death note for example, but that's kinda my limit. Am I dumb? Or am I just too anxious to see results in a language that requires patience to be fully understood? Btw, I have a basic understanding of grammar too...
>>

>Basic grammar is more important than hugely spreading your vocabulary right now, so just take it easy and make sure you understand shit.

Give us a few examples.

Also, build your own deck boyo. Add stuff as you see them, and don't just add the major points, add the specific stuff too. Don't expect Genki to magically teach you everything either, get in the habit of creating your cards and put your memorization skills to work. Make that shit sink in.

I think it's better said that i'm trying to learn to do both at the same time, even if I know I won't get anywhere like that. About reading...is anki that important? I mean right now I have a steady influx of new words daily from all over the place that actually can/may help me eventually. When I tried to use anki the first word that came was ministry of foreign affairs ffs...and that really put me off. I have like a ton of books home summing over 1600 pages and I am constantly working from them. Should I really invest time into anki too? If yes than I will gladly do it as long as I know it helps me.
>>

In Swedish, "those" is "dem där", which could be literally translated as "them there"

I'm not Swedish btw

I'm following Tae Kim's grammar guide and am currently learning about relative clauses. He says I cannot use だ to directly modify a noun with another noun, saying he will explain how to do the equivalent of this in the next section. However, I don't see it.

Basically, how can I make this sentence here in the non-past regular state of being?

学生じゃない人は、学校に行かない。

So instead of "Person who is not a student does not go to school." it says "Person who is a student does not go to school."

>>
>>149738482
>>149738506
いってらっ:)
>>
>>149738565
Or just 学生 if you want Japanese that isn't so contrived, but that doesn't really help illustrate the point Tae Kim is trying to illustrate here.
>>
>>149738482
大丈夫かい?(´• ω •`) (太い声)
>>
>>149738565
don't confuse DJT posters
the rentaikei of だ is な and its usage is limited to when it is followed by の or when だ is part of a ナ形容詞
what you're using with である is the ren'youkei plus supplementary verb ある
>>
>>149738719
by the way ナ形容詞 is also called 形容動詞 i bet youre reeling from this knowledge drop
>>
>>149738719
Yes, you're right.
But である is indeed in the rentaikei in this situation and I don't see any problems with thinking of it as the rentaikei of だ.

I actually think of ~な as the rentaikei of a 形容動詞, with ~だ being the 終止形 and ~に being the 連用形 and so on.

>>
>>149739503
There are lots of different words in Japanese that you could translate to chairman in English, so it would depend on which one you're using.

Co- could be 共同.

So maybe 共同委員長 but again it depends on what kind of chairman.
