The issue isn't retconning the earring to work only one hour.

The issue is that we're told this and then suddenly HIS POWER WAS SO HIGH HE BURNED THROUGH ALL HIS TIME.

Don't fucking give us a time limit only to change it.

Tell us that the earrings only work for a limited time for non Kaioshin and that they have to beat Zamasu before they do.

Doing this changes the entire context of the scene.

That's when it finally happens. Because that moment, when he opens himself to everyone, is when everyone can finally reach him. He decides to stop trying carrying the world's weight alone.
Then, in typical Shounen fashion, he shouts his beliefs while delivering the final blow, with the emotional background music. It doesn't get better than that, man. Who cares if he didn't shout genkidama or if no one raised their hands? It was his belief in everyone as a whole instead of himself as a warrior that made it possible. That's the point this episode conveys. I wonder if Goku and Vegeta will learn anything from it and apply it in a future arc. Perhaps the example set by Trunks will be what allows both of them to eventually transcend their limitations and surpass Beerus and the other gods. Who knows? I'm sure it'll be a fun ride nevertheless, as it has been so far.

The thing is, this isn't something we are used to in Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball has mostly been about Goku wanting to improve himself through martial arts and opposing genocide conquerors along the way. It was Vegeta in the original the character that added a little bit of depth and development, mostly getting over himself and appreciating that you can also gather strength from the others.
In Super they dialed back Goku and Vegeta a little bit so they'd have space to grow once more, but so far it's through Trunks that they showed the most character development so far. And with a depth level unusual in this series, although it's pretty common in some other Shounen series.
What can I say. I fucking love Super, despite all its flaws. I liked that contrast between Trunks and Zamasu. I liked Goku refusing to be Beerus' plaything in the tournaments. Despite the first chapters being a shitty rehash of the movies (the first one was very good, the second one was filler) I think it's gone better afterwards. I hope it gets even better yet.

Saiyans might be extremely thick for mundane tasks, but they are all extremely adapt at fighting. It's what makes them special. You don't need to perform the god ritual to become a SSG. Vegeta became one without doing it, because he was exposed to that ki.
The same happened with Trunks. He was exposed to god ki from Black, Goku, Vegeta and Zamasu. When he raged a few chapters ago he developed god ki himself; his hair is still yellow, but his ki is that of a god nevertheless.
I'm sure even Piccolo, Krillin and the others would be able to sense god ki and even develop it with enough training from Whis. But ultimately it would be a waste of time.
