I say he's exaggerating and reccommend you read the manga. The problem is that Ippo's fights are shit until the latest one, but everyone else's are great and more than make up for it. Some of the best fights in the whole series happen afterwards, just need to skim through the bad Ippo ones. Itagaki's fights I found fun, and there's a payoff to his character turning more cocky and unlikeable.
