So he accidentally wrote a male and female main character with a bunch of plot relevant panels together, then had them pair off with a jobber and a neutral girl who has powers that undo reality and so uses them to stare off into the distance saying "kurosaki-kun" in HER CHARACTER ARC.

Because that's what happens when your story gets away from you and instead of capitalizing on what youve written you veer high and right towards your narrative intent.

The wedding novel could literally just swipe one of the many RenRuki+Bya+Soul Society long fanfics out there, add some old jokes (11th division is unruly, Zaraki wants to fight Ichigo, Rangiku/Shunsui gets drunk, Hisagi is pitiful) and drop some names to let readers know they're alive and leave it at that. The only difference is this one's got the Shueisha label.

Hisagi novel is where it's at, with possible answers to questions non-shipfags want answered.

There are moments where Kubo obviously hinted that Orihime will be endgame, but then after that Rukia and Ichigo have another ambiguous moment that could be taken as hint of endgame as well. It's like when a shoujo mangaka wants to hide who she designates as endgame by giving flags to both contenders.

Ichigo and Rukia stopped interacting after FB arc, but Ichigo->Orihime was still delivered in ambiguous hints, rather than being escalated to finally push him over the line of "nakama" to Orihime.

So it's a given that people can't really call what pairings would be canon prior to chapter 686. It's like a progress bar that slowly goes from 0 to 29% then instantly jumps to 100%.

Because Kubo is suicidal and is a terrible writer. Plot and interactions between Ichigo before he turned full generic shounen MC and Rukia before she gradually became sidelined were the best thing he ever did, a miracle even, however he blew it.

A lot of things that could have happened didn't happen, all for the same reason: Kubo had a solid setting, good characters and designs, and a bit of a stylistic flair. What he couldn't do was write a consistent storyline, and he could only write good character interactions some of the time. He went for broad overarching plots with a lot of individual fights and moving parts instead of focusing on a smaller number of characters, which ended up bogged down with super-dramatic (but slow-paced) paneling depicting fights between well-designed (but generally irrelevant) characters. And because the attempt to keep so many characters involved fell flat most of the characters got short-changed in some way.
