Up to pic related. The previous chapter, damn. The history of the country started off a bit like The Ant and the Grasshopper, then became all too human. Predictable outcome but still enjoyable.

reposting shitty question:

I grabbed the 日本語 broadcast subs for LOGH from Kitsunekko
>http://kitsunekko.net/dirlist.php?dir=subtitles%2Fjapanese%2FLegend_Of_The_Galactic_Heroes%2F
but for strange reasons having something to do with the way JP channels broadcast their CC tracks all of the subtitle tracks are grouped into single SRT files with multiple tracks in them.

How can I actually use these with the one LOGH release that's actually out there? IDK how players other than MPV work, but it'll load the one file from the very beginning every time I load a new episode.

Would you have to actually go through and edit the SRT files manually into separate files or is there some better way? I have a lot of free time but I still absolutely don't want to do that. Nor do I want to hold down the subtitle-delay key for several minutes every time I get to a new episode though.

Problem: Machine translation is hard.
Solution: Throw neural network magic at it until it starts working.
Problem: Neural networks with too much complexity are *extremely* slow to simulate, and simple translations (equals literal translations) lose or change information by nature.
Solution: You need a human translator, at least until we get machine intelligence.

This just says you don't gain much from grinding anki.
If you could just recognize those (common) kanji and their onyomi, in any practical context you'd have no trouble reading those words and figuring out what they mean.

Reading and loose meaning is something you should be able to feel out through kanji when you're looking at what are obviously kango.
Sure it's beneficial, since it keeps words floating around in your headspace, but it's dull and not an efficient way to learn anything. Look words up in a dictionary while you're reading and you'll be better off. Not only do you get reading practice, but ideally the word is also reinforced through context.
Anki is designed to refresh your memory at set intervals, not to teach you how to read Japanese.

I haven't really been paying attention to the conversation, but how exactly would you read without using a dictionary?
>>
>>149663130
If looking up words in a dictionary takes a significant amount of time for you maybe you should study something else.
Type in the onyomi and press space until you have what you're looking for. If you've exhausted your knowledge and that isn't an option, then use OCR (or a text hooker if you're a new age gamer) and give the kanji a quick review to help yourself remember next time.
Anki can come in once you decide to start mining the words you look up, which could be a good idea if you have a short memory and find yourself looking up the same word frequently (or just run into some choice relic word you want to stow under your hat).
If you find yourself pressing "again" on the same word in core a lot, just delete it. Core is not helpful.

What do you think is more efficient?

core + kanji deck + writing practice (writing down the kanji from the kanji deck) + reading
or
core + reading + writing practice (writing down the vocabulary from core)

What do?
Note: I'm fucking terrible at reading and need a hour for a yotsubato chapter.

I know you think it is a waste of time, it probably is, but I enjoy it and I think it helps a little with recognition of some kanji, like I only noticed some radicals after writing a few kanji => better recognition.

>>

あい がん 【哀願】
切に願い頼むこと。相手の同情心に訴えて頼むこと。
「助命を-する」
こん がん 【懇願・悃▼願】
誠意をこめて頼むこと。
「協力を-する」

哀願
supplication; appeal; entreaty; petition
彼は妻に別れないでくれと哀願した。
He entreated his wife not to leave him.哀願
懇願
entreaty; supplication; petition
彼らは我々に援助を懇願した。
They appealed to us for help.

The English descriptions here are really no less useful than the Japanese ones. If you know what supplication means then it you can see how these two similar terms can differ in context, as demonstrated by definitions both from weblio and jisho. You're blowing it way out of proportion.

Those definitions you posted still show more nuance than the English definitions do, and the Japanese definitions on Goo have even more of an actuate distinction between the two

You don't need DOJG to figure out what the expressions in DOJG mean. They're all built out of smaller parts.
If you understand ず and とも then you don't need to flip to the end of the book to look up ずとも when you encounter it in the wild.
And knowing these patterns is less than half the game, really. When you read a sentence you need to do more than understand what each individual auxiliary verb and particle is doing. You need to identify the clauses, make sense of the subject and predicate of each clause, and figure out what fits where. That's what application is.

I have respect for Steve but... anyone else thinks that he's kind of a hack?

I don't believe he's ever reached such a great level in Japanese or even any language that is not either English or French since it's his two native languages. I mean, it's still great well compared to most people and in that he can probably converse more or less naturally in many languages of course. My point is that after having studied Japanese for a few years now I've realized how much depth it has and how much one needs to read and accumulate vocabulary and understanding of the language to reach a level where one could consider themselves "advanced" - and this I believe is something Steve has never reached in Japanese. He certainly was "fluent social-wise", but not native-tier. I bet you'd put him in front of an advanced VN, LN or jnovel he'd end up struggling a lot and wouldn't be able to read much of it "fluently".

He does seem to love language but never really go deep, he just stops once he's learned enough to go around and then goes on learning another. In that regard, he's like those people """learning a language in 30 days""", of course a more respectable one. Thoughts?
>>
Reading polite japanese is like a completely different language. I can't understand at all. This sucks.

ビッチ is Japanese for slut. It absolutely does not mean bitter hateful woman. It does mean promiscuous woman.

Also "sluts can die" would be ビッチは死ね, but since it says 死ぬ, and there's no other topic, the topic should be the same as the first clause of the sentence: "sluts (would make me) die."

You are right. That being said I don't get ビッチは死ぬ. I would understand if it was 死ね or 死んだ or 死んでる, but not 死ぬ.

I didn't think that's what the sentence meant. Didn't mean to stick the (俺が) there before 欲しい. I interpreted it with 俺 as the subject for 死ぬ and 欲しい modifying 彼女.

Without context it's a shot in the dark though. Looked like a 2ch post or something to me, so I'm quicker to assume "I want a girlfriend but..." is the sentiment there.

死ぬ could be a typo and he meant 死ね instead, then all the mysteries would be solved.

Just curious, do you guys bother to save the intransitive/transitive as two different cards?

Like a card for 助ける and another one for 助かる.

>got so pissed at not being able to remember the meanings of the words I had left today that I just hit "Good" on all them so I'll see them tomorrow
I feel like my head is about to split, trying to remember the meanings of that set of new words was killing me slowly. Too bad now I'm fucked trying to learn them, I already gave up the first day seeing them.
>>

You're late by like over a year
>>
>>149698868

I've done that before. I used to sit there for a half hour to an hour or more sitting there cycling through bundles cards that I can't remember at all feeling like I want to smash my head against the wall. I've realized when that happens it's best to just hit good and try again tomorrow. Using the time you would have spent pointlessly failing cards over and over reading is much better I think.

I actually do something similar. I set 0 new cards a day then do 20 after all my reviews are done. Doing new cards during reviews slows me down a ton because I have to actually stop and think about new cards for a bit which breaks up my flow. Review cards are a completely different mindset for me revolving around speed. Mixing the two doesn't work well.

hint: it's loading font data into memory
>>
>>149699639
You can set it so new cards are at the end. Once you finish your reviews, you should only have cards you failed and new cards, both of which should be using the learning mindset.
>>
>>149699732
I bet you also think that あなたを好き is wrong
>>
>>149699693
Anki is just software that refreshes your memory. Don't romanticize it, it doesn't actually teach you Japanese.
>>

Uh, yes it does. Everything you need to know about Japanese can be learnt through Anki.
>>
>>149699818
Isn't it? Maybe 好む... but I haven't seen that written like that either.
>>
>>149700110
There's a verb 好く

Anyway, using を with なる and 好き・だ is on par with saying "irregardless" and I'll shoot the next indignant fucker who comes in with big boy chuuni posts mysteriously implying he's the savior of modern japanese grammar
>>
>>149700205
There's nothing wrong with irregardless you fucking prescriptivist!
>>
>>149700274
Using を with なる is fine and even more correct in some cases in casual Japanese. Don't be mislead by comparisons to English.

>>
>>149699753
How can you do that? I just kinda glanced through the options on anki and didn't see anything about that.

The term is called common sense.
If you have to tell new words apart from old words, you are already exercising your brain and recognizing patterns.
Besides, reviewing some old cards in-between new cards leave a bigger interval between new cards iterations, so they have a few minutes of "sinking" before you throw them to the next day.

Guys, I've got like 10% done of the 6k core and I'm beginning to slack more and more on my reps.

What do I do anons? I want to be fluent in Japanese, but it's so frustrating sometimes with these confusingly similar words!
