So, what needs to happen IRL in order for Sora No Woto to become real?
Besides nukes exploding, walking tanks need to developed and the age to get in the military needs to be lowered

I think Sora no Woto's world goes kind of like this:
There's three phases: first, the distant future where the spider tanks and all that crap is developed. In this age people actually understand the technology employed, so the bulk of the weaponry is built.
At some point in this distant future, humanity develops some kind of gigantic bird creature that can shoot lasers of some kind through their mouth. They're probably developed to do good, but they end up going rogue and destroy the whole world (kind of like the giants in Nausicaa, which Sora no Woto's environment and OST both draw heavily from), starting the desertification process. I don't think nukes played a role in the SnW role, there's no references to radioactive areas or anything like that in the series, and it's obvious that the world is really similar to Nausicaa's.
The second phase happens between the world going in flames and the relative peace of the series. Here, the world is being consumed by the desert and humanity desperately tries to defend itself. Obviously there's not enough livable space for everybody, so they end up fighting for territory. Some of the birds of doom are still alive (or are being revived) so humanity also gets fucked by those. The fire maidens somehow appear in this phase. This period lasts a few generations, so by the time it's over nobody who knows the specifics of the future technology from the first phase survives.
The third phase is when the series takes place in.
So basically, for SnW to happen IRL we would need a huge advancement in technology, perhaps another world war passing by and another period such as the cold war. Only something would have to go very, very wrong.
This would lead to a decline in population, which would lower the age to get into the military. The nuke hypothesis is also discouraged by this; if there was any radioactivity danger then the birth and infant mortality rate wouldn't be as high as to let children into the military.
>>
>>149654090
>I don't think nukes played a role in the SnW role
*SnW world
I forgot to add this: the gigantic birds might be inspired by a sci-fi short story called Watchbird by Robert Sheckley.
Also, about the OST: the second half of the first track you hear in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is very similar to many of the songs from the SnW OST.

>>
>>
>>149654959
It's kind of a clusterfuck, they probably didn't think it through that much.
Canonically speaking, I think you shouldn't really think of the empires in the anime to have many real connections to real countries or old empires, nobody can read history books anymore so they're just remnants of memories by those who came before, who started modelling the empires after the ancient ones.
The point is that people from various places find themselves living all together and integrate their traditions together, forming a sort of post-globalist society where every place has their own culture made of bits and pieces from cultures coming from all over the world.
>>
>>149654959
man why does fucking everyone want to be Rome.

like there's Ancient Rome, The Roman Republic, The Roman Empire/Byzantine Empire, and then the HRE just off the top of my head.

And I guess Moscow is "The Third Rome", after the Fall of Constantinople.

Episode 13 always destroys me. The exact scene is the one where Kanata, Kureha and Noel are writing their wishes on those placards while that instrumental version of Servante de Feu is playing. That feeling I get watching that scene is practically indescribable. Young friends being reluctantly forthcoming about their deepest feelings that they've never really discussed with each other, while thinking about the future, laughing, encouraging each other.

I told this a long time ago, but I'm gonna repeat myself.

I live in Girona, there is a old quarter and it's the place I love the most of what I've seen in my life. I went there every year before living in Girona.

I love walking by the old streets and it's gardens and up the wall while listening Sora No Woto OST.

So that late afternoon, it was pretty dark, I passed under an arc and when I came out, I listened a trumpet, horribly played, during like 3 seconds. It never sounded again.

Only 3 seconds where an entire world passed by my mind, I thought of Kanata and I looked everywhere, I didn't even have time to cry.

Here is Mangana tower from when the construction on the grounds was taking place, I'm partially sure I mentioned to the anons I met that the area was completely different compared to this year we met.

Now it has a more traditional Japanese feeling to it which is what I got when I visited in 2016. I don't know if you know what I'm talking about but I felt like the newer design of the ground below the tower has a Japanese influence, I felt it a lot.

Also how did anons enjoy la bodeguilla de basilio? MPR said you all had a good time and it is one of my favourite places to go too in Cuenca and I love looking at the old photographs on the wall seeing the town's history

The worlds of both shows have a similar atmosphere of gentle mystery to them, and speculation about the setting is a selling point for each. Also both feature an all-female cast in unconventional slice-of-life scenarios, both go fairly in-depth with developing their characters, and both shows build to an emotional climax that highlights the characters growth. I think overall they're very similar, at least when you look at them broadly.

I'm probably the only person on /a/ that didn't really enjoy Aria. I'd pretty go as far as to say I can nowadays only enjoy SoL anime, but Aria never had the same influence as SnW or Haibane I'm just waiting for some retard to point out Haibane doesn't classify as SoL because some autistic subjective definition.

She was manipulated anon. For all she knew she was doing the right thing. And even if she did facilitate a bunch of Romans deaths, she was instrumental in saving many more lives than she ever took.
>>
>>149678273
It's not autistic though, it's true. Haibane had plenty of SoL elements but on the whole, it's far closer to being a drama/mystery.
>>
>>149678482
Plenty of SoL series have drama elements. If the amount Haibane has is enough to tip the scale, I wouldn't really consider SnW a SoL either.
>>
>>149658358
Not even one, the closest we get is massive leveled cities that are ultimately massive condemned and deserted ruins in the middle of the desert that is No-Man's-Land

That's not something unique to nuclear weapons
>>
>>149678575
SnW only stops being a SoL in the last two episodes though. In Haibane, the point of the SoL parts is to set up the drama.
>>
>>149678891
I don't think the setup is that different though. Even the way characters are developed to the point of drama end could very well be parallel. I'd say the ending of Haibane feels more on-point because the landing to it was smoother as there was a sudden spike of grim in the mid-point too.

You could say parts of SnW are more drama than SoL. Aside from the finale, episodes 7, 9, and 10 I remember as being pretty dramatic. Neither show is a "pure" slice of life, but both have major elements of it. While one might have more or less than the other, it's sort of a stupid point to argue because I think both could be summed up as "Drama/SoL"

I watched Haibane Renmei as some SnW anon recommended it to me. I did not like it at all. If anything I felt like it was the opposite of SnW. I can see the similarities (them being an unconventional SoL like that one anon mentioned), but SnW was all about finding happiness in a cruel world, while HR was finding sad truths in an otherwise happy/utopian setting.

I am currently watching Aria and I'm enjoying it a lot. I've started reading Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou as well.

The wotos got to dark at times to have such a ridiculous episode. Even the piss episode was still consistent to the world.
But I would think that PTSDfu would be apposed to dressing up as gangsters and "shooting" people.

Sora no Woto has probably the best special episodes of any anime I watched, they complement the show so well in my opinion. Normally these specials contribute almost nothing to the plot, theme or to the anime as a whole, but in the case of SnW I can't really imagine seeing it without ep 7.5(or it was 8.5?)and 13.

7.5 was fun, but I don't know if it added much to the show. Aside from explaining where the booze came from in another episode I guess.
>>
>>149708538
Haibane Renmei and Shinsekai Yori remind me the most of this.

Haibane is a masterpiece about cute girls who died/killed themselves doing cute things.

SSY has the same theme of "so far post-apocalypse that no remembers it." TRIGGER WARNING: in one episode a girl kisses a girl and a boy kisses a boy and 5 million /a/utistic faggots flipped their shit
>>
>>149709023
The gay episode was really badly done, as for example compared to the original novel the lack of exposition made it seems almost comedic.

While SSY is one of my favorite series I wouldn't say it gives any SnW vibes at all.
>>
I wish the anime explored the theme of music being a timeless and universal language more, in the beginning it was looking like it would be the central theme of the show, but they kind of left aside in the middle of it and then brought back at the end.
>>
>>149709144
>>149709023
I think SnW and SSY are similar in the sense that both are series with very unique style and setting, but that's it. They're pretty different in terms of atmosphere, theme or really anything.

Both are masterpieces though, especially SSY.
>>
>>149709144
>>149709235
I'm saying SSY and SnW are similar in the fact that they take place so far in the future that the modern age has been forgotten, and there's this air of mystery to it and a lot of things are left to the imagination.
>>
>>149709235
>masterpiece
Everything about Squealer (did nothing wrong) was, but the rest was kind of a let down for me.
>>
>>149709310
I don't think SSY leaves anything up to imagination though. The way the stories are presented are totally different, SSY doing heavy infodumps and giving exposition to every aspect of the story.

I'm not heavily disagreeing with you as I agree the future setting and sense of mystery are both core parts of the experience, but SSY never had the same kind of speculah as everything was laid bare, especially if you read also the novel. Even the events that lead to the new world are described in almost shocking detail.

>Twf you will never see PK user take a direct hit from nuke and survive animated
>>
>>149709377
Really? The best part about the show was the world building for me. I see many people claiming that it only got good in the last arc(the war one), but strongly disagree. Every episode in the first and second arc is filled with mystery, tension and context to the plot and the world, the last arc is just a conclusion to all the build up from before.
>>

Seems like a good opportunity to ask. I finished SSY a few months ago.

What was the spooky woman that burst out of the bug-eyed guy when he died?
Why was Shun alive inside Saki's brain?
>>
>>149709652
>What was the spooky woman that burst out of the bug-eyed guy when he died?
I don't know what you are exactly talking about, but I'm assuming it's on the first episodes when the bug was burned? It's a defense mechanism the machine had developed: sense of empathy activates the death feedback in humans, and when being burned the machine projects an image of a woman holding a child which is intended to cause the attacker to die. It actually worked quite effectively, as seen in anime.
>Why was Shun alive inside Saki's brain?
There are interpretations about this and I think it's pretty much the only thing not explicitly stated. Either it's just Saki imagining things or then Shun somehow still affects her, which is not that far fetched as his powers were really something else.

>>149708538

>>
>>149709764
>on the first episodes when the bug was burned?
No. When the rat people invaded the village and started killing people. There was a guy with bulged eyes who tried to show off with his magic and got killed. Then a spooky ghost burst out of him.

Not him, but I heard some things were changed from the novel. Like for example, that various scenes between satoru and saki got cut or that the anime had much more shun shoehorn than the book, can you confirm this?
>>
>>149709806
I don't even remember the scene so I can't exactly answer. I'm guessing it had something to do with magic bullshit, seeing cantus sometimes seems to take a form of a woman as seen in the first arc.

I think he's reffering to that guy who liked to show it off but ended up getting killed, it was just before the OP guy(forgot his name)compressing a explosion into his hand to release as a laser beam.
>>
>>149709860
Okay. It was similar to the infodump slug, but it didn't seem to have anything to do with death feedback or defense, since the guy was already killed.

I probably should have been more descriptive.
When the village was being attacked, all the survivors took shelter inside a magic barrier, and then the bug-eyed guy started dancing with fans, before getting stabbed by the rat people in disguise.
>>
>>149709898
That's so sad to read, I really wish SnW got one more season, or at least some specials.
>>
>>149709856
I don't think that much is actually changed though as the SSY anime is pretty straightforward adaption with just some world-building details cut, to the point I never really paid attention to this kind of differences: naturally the novel includes more dialog between Saki and Satoru and the scenes were much more sexual and explicit in the novel but I can't really confirm any shoehorning as I don't think anything was added to the anime that wasn't present in novel. I should probably rewatch the series just to spot differences.

Honestly. Historically such battles tended to be so hideously one-sided (like that landing atempt in the Canary Islands where they were roughly un-landed by the port's fishmonger women, "no need to bother the garrison") as their sea batles were for the English side. To such grade that both countries had lmost symetrical sayings: "Englishmen on land, and at sea, the Virgin Mary" vs "Spaniards I want at sea, and on land, St. George help us".
If you wanna do that joke, search for some pic of the Portuguese army.
The Portugal vs Spain battles tended to be even more amusing tan the example above.

nope, there is a regular line betwen Cuenca and another city that also services Alarcon, just that you need to phone them in advance for the bus to actually stop at Alarcon (it's a 200 people little village)

Wew, going to this SnW trip sounds like it's gonna be pretty expensive.

How much was spent overall?
>>
>>149723215
Depends where you're coming from, travel is the most expensive part. A couple of weeks after some anons stayed for a week at a hotel, another anon visited the town for a couple of days by sleeping under the stars. He presumably spent far less.
>>
>>149723215
Just go poorfag and don't eat at restaurants and you only need to worry about flights if necessary and accommodation.

I went with the group and I think I ended up spending about 550€ for everything.
The travel was about 140€, hotel for two weeks cost around 200€, 50€ for various travel expenses (bus from Madrid to Cuenca, autobus in Cuenca), about 15 to 30€ a day for eating (restaurants are really cheap, and we always got tapas so we split the cost) and 25€ for the van to Alarcón.
Funny thing is, when I got home I had just enough money in my wallet to buy the train ticket home, if I had bought even a burger at the airport I would've been stuck somewhere on the way.

There was the anon who wrote the Relique Abandonnée blog a few years ago, he took a lot of comparison pics.
The "biggest" was the one with people from the IRC this year, we were eight in total.
There was another anon who just so happened to be passing by Cuenca the first two days we were there, we managed to meet up with him too. He said he's been going every year for two or three years now.
Then there's the anon >>149723377 mentioned, I think he went there a couple weeks after us.
I know two other people who also visited Cuenca this year for a few days each because of Sora no Woto, not sure if they post on /a/ though.

It's such an out of the way and unique location for a show that really struck a cord with a lot of people. It isn't just "somewhere in Japan" but a place the creators went to and put a lot of effort into making it feel alive. It's as much a character as the rest of the cast.

I live in Canada, and the price has been steadily increasing over the last few years. They were once extremely affordable surplus rifles, but they've gone up a few hundred to around 700 CAD for a Russian Captured German Mauser like what I've got (essentially the same as what the Woto's carried; no front sight hood, short cleaning rod etc).
In America, they could probably be half as much at ~400 USD or even less. Keep an eye out for holiday deals, and you could always go for another Mauser from a different country (the Yugoslavian Mausers are popular and cheap) but they will have differences in design.

Not in particular. I'm not scared of anything actually happening, and I'm no prepper either. It's more of a "why not" for me, since it's interesting to me both from a "guns are cool" aspect and a "muh freedoms" aspect. I was raised being told that guns are the root of all evil, but growing up has a way of making you think for yourself.

As much as I like the show my biggest gripe with it was that it felt like the setting should have had a different show in it. Sure K-On benefits from being set in a post-apocalyptic military, but surely there was a better match for that setting. Maybe I'm just not much of a SoL guy but the episodes that stick in my mind are the ones with less emphasis on SoL, the one where they fake a hit on a bootlegger(?), the PTSD one, the spider tank battles, and the piss one just because it was so pointless.

Taken from the IMFDB (internet movie firearm database)

>Kino's weapon of choice, "The Cannon" is a custom Colt 1851 Navy London Model revolver. It is described as firing .44 caliber bullets (as opposed to the 1851's normal .36 caliber bullets) and uses "liquid gunpowder". Kino is also seen detaching the loading lever from the front of the barrel and using at as a foregrip when using a specialized, high-power round.

>Kino's secondary weapon is a custom Colt Woodsman Match Target (specifically a 2nd series model, as indicated by the magazine release behind the trigger guard) referred to as "The Ranger". It features a threaded barrel for the addition of a sound suppressor, and a laser sight has been built into the weighted compensator. Kino keeps it in an IPSC holster behind her back.

TL;DR: don't.
Strictly forbidden and thighly controled in all the country.
And before you start complaining about dem government controlling stuff, know that it USED to be allowed free camping everywhere, until too many foreign tourists fucking forgot Spain is a dry summer country (meaning the vegetation is VERY sensitive to forest fires) and caused several too many fuckhuge fires that took several lifes.
Basically, if you try to plant a tent anywhere outside of a regulated camping area, you'll have the polite and atentive (that's a sarcasm, BTW) members of the Seprona (forest-keeping branch of the Guardia Civil - Spanish Gendarmerie) telling you where you can plant the tent in less than an hour (hint: it's a body part). And the Guardia Civil is a military police force; they just plain don't fuck around.

there are, both things. The Anon who "slept rough" just was lucky that you are actually allowed to bivoacq overnight as long as you don't plant a tent and move on the next morning (an exception that was made actually to allow homeless people not to be prosecuted for being homeless, instead of to allow mountaineers and campers to camp; we just use the loophole). If he had done, he would have been told to move along, no excuses.

Laws are mostly for the gypsies who like to set up shitty little cardboard shacks and claim they are property but if you do camp in Spain like that you'd be dealing with some dodgy looking characters, I would not recommend, no idea what the Spanish guard's attitude is towards sleeping on the streets if you're a non-citizen since I've heard they tried bringing it back, seemed dangerous though.

It would help you, most people in Spain are about as uninterested as Burgers in learning foreign languages. That said, they also are very used to "guiris" (=foreigners that don't speak Spanish) and don't look down on them. They'll made their best to guide you to the tourist office info or to help you in an emergency, and bars/restaurants/hotels/large stores personnel usually speak enough English for you to be able to order and pay.

We've had Nazis burn homeless people to death in the past though.

I forgot to tell you Anons something.
Whatever you do, if you decide to camp or rough it in Spain,
DO
NOT
LIGHT
FIRE!
That's the one thing that gets the Seprona and the regular cops truly berserker.
If you do, there will be no "maybes", no "looking the other way", no "well, it's a tourist and not a gypsy, he's harming nobody". You WILL be stopped, fined, and maybe arrested.
Have fun and be safe.

Or other hobois might rape you. Anon was asking about the law part of the risks. The not-law part we all know.

only if you are so idiot as to light a fire in a place full of large "WARNING: DO NOT LIGHT FIRES FUCKING ANYWHERE. RISK OF FUCKHUGE FOREST FIRE" signs telling you not to light a fire because it is very likely rto spark a fuckhuge forest fire.
I told you that's what turns the into berserks, not that they are berserk all the time

The PSP game is gay as fuck. I feel like it even overwrites some character traits for the sake of fanservice.

A couple years ago, one of those tourist-initiated fires killed 11 persons (from the firefighters) and burned to the ground almost a whole village. That was the point the laws changed from "fire only where allowed" to "if you want to light fire, BURN YOUR FUCKING UNDERPANTS FOR ALL WE CARE!". Overreacting? Maybe. Or maybe not. There had been two or three such huge fires every single summer since the '60s - that was the straw that broke teh camel's back.
