You know while I am a huge fan of Oshii, Masamune Fucking Shirow created GITS. Oshii's endorsement means little to me. Now if they make a western adaption of Jin Roh or Patlabor and he endorses it, that will be something

Overstated, but I agree in principle.

Oshii's rendition of GiTS is where the characters and story are at their least interesting. He does an incredible job of illustrating the themes in play, and the art / animation / atmosphere are obviously incredible, but that's it. The only actual entertainment value is really abstract. In both the manga and SAC the characters had dimensionality, they didn't just exist as totemic foils for the theme. GiTS '95 was admirable, but not super entertaining. It's mostly renowned for being "impressive," not for actually being "good."

Anyway, what puts Oshii in hack territory is the way that he does this with everything. He sucked all the life out of GiTS and Patlabor 2, really just because he's trying to turn everything he works on into Kerberos. That's why the best thing he was ever involved in was Jin-Roh.
