If not for the memory, I think you can buy any kindle that is unregistered (so from a brick and mortar shop, not Amazon) and can choose what region/language you want to set it up as.

Anon fagposting about his test aside, I'd recommend anyone who is serious about taking the 日本語能力試験 to do it during a planned holiday to Japan instead of making travelling to Japan to shit in a shitty hot little room with tiny desks for a handful of hours the overall memorable thing, because that's a good way to kill any impression of a nation.

Some countries only hold them once a year at certain venues, and if you're planning to go to Japan, it would make sense to take advantage of taking the test while you are over there. Two birds, one stone, and all that.

Does your vocabulary comprise around 1700 words?
>>
>>149629062
It was fortunately or unfortunately written by someone more involved with academia than not, meaning it fell into the same sort of trappings that a lot of these sort of things fall into: written from an audience under the assumption that they are educated and relatively well read.
To put it bluntly: people don't read books any more like they did in the past.

I'm a very well read native English speaker and I didn't know the first two. Someone that reads early 20th century adventure novels would probably know them.

Even being a little rare 'acquiesce' is pretty easy, with it having a latin root and all. Pretty much the same as 'acquire'.

That or look for ebook versions from Amazon or whatever because they're usually cheap as fuck, if they have digital versions, considering what you get (depending on the book it might be fucking months worth of reading) and places like Rakuten and Amazon has easy to strip DRM.

Not really the case, most translators are fine with changing titles completely in cases where doing so would render the book more relatable to readers and thus sell more. I'm not sure if this was the case here though.

By the time you reach the advanced kanji, you should be able to search for them yourself via radicals or stroke order, no?

Yes, it sort of defeats the purpose of a pre-made deck, and will take longer, BUT at least in going through the trouble you will remember them better. So it's worth the effort unless you have literally zero time. In which case, what the hell are you doing studying Japanese in the first place?

Anyone can make it if they put the effort in. You're not born with willpower anymore than weight lifters somehow pop out of their mothers already jacked up and with massive muscles on their tiny little bodies. But I've tried teaching myself about a dozen times and it never works. I even paid for a tutor at one point but I'm broke as hell and end up wanting to die anyways.

If I can work out 6 days a week for three years without missing a single session, I should be able to learn a language. I don't know why it's so hard for me. I've been trying for like six years.

Re-assess your goals, if they're incredibly vague then you'll never feel like you've accomplished anything. What does "fluent" mean to you, what steps will you take to reach it, how will you assess your progress?

Working out consistently proves that you can stick to a schedule and achieve results. You know this as a fact, so there's no reason to not be confident about your abilities.

Physical exercise is a hell of a lot more tangible than self study; you feel the soreness after a workout and know that results will come eventually. Whereas studying a grammar point here and there, and a smattering of vocab / kanji won't really make you instantly feel "I've improved" a lot of the time, it's a hell of a lot more fuzzy and long term project.

Set small goals and reward yourself when you reach them, instead of beating yourself up over "I haven't even reached X yet".

After some time, crack open a random text of a totally foreign language to you (russian? korean?) and see how trying to read that feels. Then go back and try to read something random in Japanese. I guarantee you that your eyes will be opened after that.

Maybe don't spend several fucking hours a day on it? Not everyone has autism or access to amphetamines, you can slowly increase over time. Start with the basics, then when you get comfy start reading basic shit. If you're burning out after a few weeks, you're never going to get there, you can have the best pace in the world but if you fall over at the first checkpoint you're never going to win a marathon.

Try the pomodoro technique, and stop pressuring yourself to go super fast.

Speed and efficiency are good, but not if they're making you stop. Even the slowest of slow snail paces is better than no progress at all.

The end of the day, language learning is about consistency, not speed.

You sound like you're trying to fix the problem, just haven't hit on the right solution for yourself yet? Take care of yourself and maybe try a different med with advice from a doc? (I have no idea how dangerous that is)

Either way, my first advice still stands. Do your reps! Even if everything else in your life is uncertain, you WILL learn Japanese if you keep on that path. Just stop trying to bulldoze through, slow to a stroll if you need.

道の真ん中を、一台のモトラド(注・二輪車。空を飛ばないものだけを指す)が走っていた。

The straightfoward literal meaning is correct. モトラド is a made up word hence the notice, 指す is what the words points to, in other words its definition. 空を飛ばないものだけ -> only things that don't fly.
So モトラド is a two-wheeled ground vehicle.

リライト.

The situation is pretty weird but me and 吉野 showed up at school on a holiday by accident and started walking around and ended up getting lost in the school. The hallways became long and no matter how far we walked back and forth we would get no where for hours. Looking out a window we would see only white. We got into a fight and started scrambling around and broke through the door to the club room to the "regular" world again. Looking out the window realizing it became night time even though it was just supposedly day time in the other world is where "さっきまでの窓は真っ白で何も見えなかったけど、夕日を拝んではいない。" comes in. I'm putting way too much time into this sentence that could just be spent reading more.

You know, I used to love anime and manga but there was so much variety before, nowdays it's all so stale it's almost like we went full 徳川時代 with basically all the media being about sex and bitches. I mean look at the catalog, it's nothing but flat figurines to masturbate to, it's nauseating. I say this as someone who faps on hentai quite often. Forgot to respond before going to sleep.
About to start reading again. My memory of the anime adaptation of キノの旅 must be really poor because I can't remember any of the second and third "国" in the light novel ever being mentioned in the anime.
For some reason Jade Reader isn't saving my bookmarks properly. They work fine when created while reading by the moment the app is shut down and started up again later, the history and any previously made bookmarks are none existant, which is annoying and defeats the purpose of being able to create bookmarks.
About 22% through the first volume. Hell of a lot faster reading through a text version with popup dictionary support compared to scans. Added some 200 words to mining deck which if it were reading from scans I probably would have added half that over the same material simply due to how easy it is to add vocab to a word like. Probably going to have to ease up on that and more than likely adding words I know well enough not not have to review them.

Where are you up to in your reading? For context キノ has just left the dilapidated royal manor with the tombstones in the rear yard and heading to the next country after explaining why she stays for three days at a place.

The deck for pic related?
Has 3787 kanji?
Couldn't you just fill in the blanks in those cards which don't have that information, yourself? For example the card for 剪 is missing information for the Onyomi, Nanori, English, Examples and stroke count/radical information, which you can use jisho for that:
http://jisho.org/search/%E5%89%AA%20%23kanji
Add the information to the card as you come across it the first time upon reviewing and problem solved, surely.

I had to edit the formatting of mine as it didn't space entries with tabbed spacing, instead when I opened the txt file it was plain spacing, meaning I had to go through and insert a tabbed space at each interval which didn't contain a common dividing character that could be converted to a tabbed space.
Overall maybe an extra ten minutes of work before ending up in an Anki deck, so it's not so bad.

If you are using Anki to study one aspect of Japanese, you aren't allowed to study any other aspects of Japanese and you are not allowed to read/listen/watch any other Japanese during this. You can only every do one thing at a time because spending a handful of minutes a day on one thing means the remaining free time out of the 24 hours are no longer available for anything else.

Apparently.

Pretty much this. There is a very famous "Japanese course" in my language (think Namasensei) that is ABSOLUTE shit, but it's been around on YouTube since Naruto was cool, and that's the go-to recommendation.

Those classes are probably the reason I never learned Japanese back then, even RTK would have been way better.

I grabbed the 日本語 broadcast subs for LOGH from Kitsunekko
>http://kitsunekko.net/dirlist.php?dir=subtitles%2Fjapanese%2FLegend_Of_The_Galactic_Heroes%2F
but for strange reasons having something to do with the way JP channels broadcast their CC tracks all of the subtitle tracks are grouped into single SRT files with multiple tracks in them.

How can I actually use these with the one LOGH release that's actually out there? IDK how players other than MPV work, but it'll load the one file from the very beginning every time I load a new episode.

Would you have to actually go through and edit the SRT files manually into separate files or is there some better way? I have a lot of free time but I still absolutely don't want to do that. Nor do I want to hold down the subtitle-delay key for several minutes every time I get to a new episode though.

What are anons opinion on Stephen Krashen's Input Hypothesis:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Input_hypothesis

Does the theory close to the reality?
>>
>>149657322
I could still learn to write without too much effort, and if I had learned to write back when I started I'd have forgotten how to by now. Also, the chance of that happening is zero.
>>
>>149657493
Yes. The input hypothesis is the only mechanism through which people can actually "acquire" language. Note that input can come from within, but only in very limited quantities, and only in the contest of an existing language framework. This is part of how language evolution happens.

Aside from "acquisition", you can "learn" aspects of a language without input, and this is useful in the context of classes, editing, and preparing yourself to get "over the hurdle" of understanding interesting content in the language you're learning. I had to "learn" the kana and around a few thousand japanese words, in addition to a bit of grammar, before I was able to crack open manga and understand what was going on. However, I also had a *lot* of "acquisition" from exposure to anime and the japanese internet in the meantime, meaning that I was never only "learning".

A simpler way to see things is that you first learn things, and second, acquire them. Input is *required* for the acquisition step, and without acquisition, you cannot be fluent, neither in speech nor consumption.

>>
>>149657493
I'm pretty sure most people are fond of it. I am at least. Steve Kaufmann preaches the shit out of it and it makes way more sense than how language is usually "taught."

The only catch is "comprehensible" input. With most languages that are similar to english, most content is vaguely comprehensible with just a few words and not much studying so you can go at it from almost the get-go but because Japanese is so dissimilar from English there is really no comprehensible input that you can understand without some level of memorizing vocab/kanjis and such. How much you actually need to study to go full-on with it is what requires some level of personal discretion and that's where I think a lot of people are going to meme about going through all of RTK before even looking at baby books come in.

This is basically why I keep spamming that Japanese needs its own version of
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/2003820603

You still would need a vocab deck so that you can actually read and not just listen but it's still comprehensible input at a regular pace from day one.
>>
>>149657545
Maybe if you're a NEET who doesn't plan to do anything involving Japanese besides fapping to nukige. If you intend to study or work in Japan, you have to be able to write, period.
>>
>>149657680
Looks pretty legit. Have you gone through this? I stopped using Anki after Core6k and the DOJG deck.

Now that I think about it, the DOJG deck is a little similar to this. Not suitable for straight-up beginners though.
>>
>>149657680
Basically i+1 doesn't work as a coursebuilding method because you're always going to have things go in a catastrophically bad order for someone. You can only have overarching discrete levels of comprehension, like graded readers, where each entry introduces a *set* of new grammar and words, but not point by point.

The best way for someone to get comprehensible input in japanese is to use bilingual texts. Which we have, kind of. And past the early beginner stages, they're worse than forcing your way through untranslated text, because they actually get in the way due due to how different japanese and english are.
>>
>>149657680
>https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/2003820603

isn't this basically Krashen's n+1 theory?

>>
>>149657789
Core Optimized is. I think it's general good practice for any legit deck-maker to follow by it and a lot of the recommended ones do.
>>149657814
I was thinking of the hardcore ones that go through the "advanced" books. The beginner one would definitely get you some really good practice but I forget if the material itself is difficult. If you're getting through it without headache then that's pretty great.
>>
>>149657789
Yes
>>149657778
Well, it helps that chinese grammar is easier, but the entire point of the deck I linked is that it is sorted to introduce vocab slowly. The sorting is not perfect, and some cards are much longer than what you are able to easily handle at that time. But usually you can memorize the sentence while enough to sort out the sounds after playing it repeatedly, and then even for longer sentences I find I can usually comprehend it by the time the interval gets a bit larger. If you cant? Then so what, just suspend those cards. So it works perfectly fine vocab wise. The problem, again, is that it's harder to sort for grammar. But even then as long as all sentence have translations, you can just kind of accept it until you get a chance to actually read up on it.

>>149657765
The full audio is important. I do it with only the audio on the front. The thing about sentence decks is that if you are testing yourself on understanding the sentence, they make you prone to just memorizing the translations. If you are testing yourself on picking apart the audio, then the worst case is that you memorize the Japanese/Chinese sentence, which is not so bad at all.
>>
>>149657888
>Core Optimized is.
Instead of introducing things in the order they're easiest to comprehend, it introduces them in a constructive order. Which is different, and wrong. He thought he was doing i+1 though, which makes it worse. Don't get me wrong, constructive order has its place, and KKLC is a great example of it, but nukemarine also didn't know enough about japanese to know what a constructive order is for kanji included in vocab terms.

A real i+1 vocab deck would be in the order of acquisition that someone using no memorization methods would get while consuming the japanese language. Stuff like 無効, 放す, and 自ら would be at the very top.
>>
>>149657975
>Stuff like 無効, 放す, and 自ら would be at the very top.

>>
>>149657891
I always liked the discreteness of Core when I was doing it alongside material that I actually liked (Idol variety shows). Just the kanji on the front and all of the information and audio on the back. I think if you're doing a deck for a really sustained period of time it's important not to put too much energy into it if that cuts into your energy you'd otherwise put into reading/listening.

Really depends on where you're at though. That deck definitely would be really great for when Anki's the only practice you really want to do (and there's nothing wrong with that)

And really the order for the first 3k words or so does not really matter so much because you need ALL of them to have any chance of watching an animay

>>149658009
That deck WOULD be your comprehensible listeing. You can of course do reading with audio on the side too. But until you are near fluent it is very difficult to find comprehensible audio input that you are testing yourself on without looking at subs.

It's fine, but I think there are too many exercises, particularly if your first goal is reading. After the first book I just did read the grammar notes and example sentences, listened to the example dialog and then only did the listening and reading comprehension exercises in the 問題 section.

In the end it doesn't really matter what beginner textbook you use, just remember to start reading native material on the side like NHK Easy and Yotsubato once you get through maybe half of the first book.
