Episode was pretty good. Not amazing I think, but really good. First time I felt genuinely confused, but not too hard to figure out after a minute or two.

Kind of questionable to have an episode entirely focused around a side character I think but it also showed some interesting stuff about PI that is important. The gate that opened inside a PI that resembles Iro's paintings led to a different PI that seemed to more directly reflect the creator's memories and "mental landscape", and of course that confirmed that PIs can be created by individuals and that they don't have to be present for that. This brings up some interesting questions about whether the previous PIs are the same and whose they could possibly belong to, though we already had that on the table.

Pic related towards the end of the episode stuck out to me. It appears to be another gate, inside the world that already came from a gate. Where would it go? Why was it in a place they could not reach? The bridge, canyon, and color palette all presumably point towards some shit as well but I will need to think a bit more.

Something about this episode, and the show in general I guess, has a dream like feel to it. All the time skipping, the way certain elements are barely understood, the way certain characters never seem to give a thorough explanation, the way Cocona seems to just go along with a lot of things, maybe those things are just poor directing, but it also reminds me of dreaming.

I think this episode served to show that memories are sometimes, maybe always, the foundation of PI, but the PI does not necessarily reflect that foundation. Like a dream, the form a PI takes can be arbitrary (desert world with spiky moon and maybe painting world), loosely related to the 'real' world (snowy world and vacuum world), or influenced by a fragment (spooky school world). It's debatable whether or not a PI world can exist without the presence of a fragment, or if a PI world could hold more than one fragment. The spooky school world fell apart when the fragment was taken but we don't know whether or not the fragment was simply manipulating the PI's appearance. When Yayaka left the desert world with the fragment, there was no sign that the world would fall apart or otherwise disappear. However, that fragment only took the form of an inhabitant and did not have as strong an influence on the appearance of the world that the episode 5 fragment did.

That being said, we know memories are not infallible. Gaps in memory or flat out incorrect recollections of events are extremely common. What happened this episode was the girls and boy entered a PI that had Iro's memories as its foundation. After the fragment (maybe the fragments are mental road blocks that prevent a troubled mind from healing?) was retrieved, a gate to those memories was revealed. Cocona and Papika played out those memories and by telling granny Iro's name, gave Iro's mind some closure or maybe even legitimately changed her memories.

This potential ability to manipulate memories may very well be the method the Asclepius bitches wish to use to conquer the world. That is, if the world they inhabit is even real to begin with.

If a person makes a painting and the emotions and memories of that person go into the painting and it later spawns a PI I would say the person created the PI in the same way that they created the painting.

The whole previous point that the PI containing her memories could be incidental to the fact she created the object rather than her literally creating a PI isn't one that can be easily dismissed though. It is quite a subtle distinction, for example imagine if all objects/things have a PI linked to them then the fact that she created the object doesn't mean she created the PI itself if you see what I mean? I think it was just a way to fit both Cocona and Papika into the illusion as Iro. It also helps show the difference between Iro when she's usually at her parents' house and Iro when she's usually at her grandmother's house. The Iro usually at her parents' house shows this more by making the Papika representing her forlorn and so different from how a normal Papika would act/feel.

The color changes just represents her mood at the time, she's orange when she's with her grandmother, and she's blue when she's at her parents' house, when she was waiting outside grandma's house at night, and when she found out grandma didn't remember her. We already know that PI influences the people inside it based on who it's based on, but now that we know there's multiple levels to an illusion it seems like its influence grows the deeper you go into it. They couldn't even remember who they were when they were on the second level, and both thought they were Iroha.

What chooses who the illusion is based off of, and what decides how much influence it has over you? Even the KKK team which is more resistant to PI still changed into the school uniform in episode five.

There were two pretty big hints before it at least. The purse being right behind her with her unable to find it, and the forgetting she had already given a birthday gift thing.

I also thought she was dead at first though. In hindsight, she probably literally forgot to tell anyone she was going to the hospital and then left or was taken there, which made her appear dead. In a way that is kind of terrifying in its own way, since that could seriously happen with someone like that and you wouldn't know where they went or what happened to them. They could stumble off somewhere and die or get injured due to being incapable of taking care of themselves, and you would never know what happened and wait helplessly for news of their fate that may never come, possibly blaming yourself for not being there to prevent it.

This is a legitimate fear for people around others with Alzheimers, I would assume.

I don't think the mechanism by which PI operates will ever be explained clearly. We get hints here and there but the important thing is its existence and how the characters react to and learn from it, not its 'programming'. This is very much a show about the characters and the strange situations they find themselves in. The rules of the show's universe and overarching plot are really just a way to craft and organize the events.

Makes me think. Can they enter illusions of people on the other side of the globe without leaving home? Have we even seen any cities other than the one they live in?

It would certainly be kind of weird if the KKK/Flip Flap was only gathering stones from this one region while other places are populated. That could imply the area is special for some reason.

This could perhaps support the idea that the "real world" we are shown is not actually the real world.

I'm really impressed by how well-directed this show is. Somehow they managed to make us interested enough in this green-haired background girl that today's episode was actually interesting and felt like a valuable lesson in an important character. Notwithstanding the fact that she has had practically no impact on the story so far and has only shown up in a few scenes.

So we just got enough of a taste of her to think "who IS this person?" and we've been wondering that for weeks, and now all of a sudden we get a whole episode telling us in rigorous detail not only who the person is, but what her childhood was like, what her motivation for painting is, and so on. And yet we're still wanting to know more and more.

How did this show make me so interested in a background character?

A good comparison is, anyone remember that Psycho-Pass episode about that lesbian Enforcer that was only ever shown in a few scenes, and then out of nowhere we got a backstory episode for her and it just felt like a huge "who cares?" Yet somehow I didn't feel that at all from this episode.

They match their personalities. The bubbly and unrefined girl gets sparkly bubbles that can adapt to any situation, and are as unbreakeable as her cheery disposition. The serious and intelligent problem-solver gets whatever the appropriate tool is for the situation (usually a weapon).

Basically yes, Baa-san was reprieve from her parents fighting, so likely she mentally segregated the two from one another, both Papika and Cocona coming together at the end to tell Baa-san their name was them letting Iroha reconciling her two experiences.

This scene in particular had a neat detail.
Cocona(Iro) had just learned that granny forgot who she was, transitioning from orange(happiness) to blue(sadness). She rushes home to switch with Papika(Iro), because she has taught herself that by doing so, she will become orange(happy) again.

However, Papika is already blue so the switch can't happen. The sadness that she thought only existed at home has now bled into the happiness that existed with granny. So the girls fall deep into despair but ultimately find that happiness again when they confront granny.
