Learning Japanese is a lot like stretching your own anus - there is some apparent, but artificial growth due the natural elasticity, but if you really wanna achieve nihongoatse, you have to permanently enlarge it, so it is bigger even in "shrunk mode". When you reach that point, you are ready to stretch again.

Consider the following:

>>149598047
Not whoever asked the question, but thank you, was going to post this too. They used the Chinese calendar which is a lunar calendar in the sense that it cares more about having a new month when the moon is back to the same phase than the months equating to a solar year. This is why Chinese new year is on a different date every year in the standard "western" gregorian calendar.

The Gregorian calendar is like a middle ground, which makes those wiki links a bit misleading. It is based on the moon phases but adjusted to actually perfectly fit a solar year. (it still doesn't, hint: leap days) If we didn't do this the seasons would move around...

For the record, Japan uses the gregorian calendar exclusively and has for hundreds of years, also:

You mean Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Plain old "vertigo" is 暈倒病 or even more casually 目眩/立ちくらみ.
Rather misleading there, anon, posting a highly technical medical description and conflating it with the commonly abbreviated term in English.

Still, I think that gregorian calendar is based on the solar year. The synodic month in fact is ~29 days and the leap days are made to kinda fit seasons

Jesus Christ how do radicals work and should I even bother with them?
I expected small kanji components that build a kanji and that it makes sense.
Of course just like everything in Japanese nothing makes sense.

You have 目 as radical and there is also one that's supposed to be legs okay, fine.
You would think 見 is made from 目 + the legs and that is obviously the case but fuck everything it's also it's own radical.
Why? There are many more like that.

Even worse I learn one radical and then I notice it has variants that don't look anything like the original radical.

In other cases you learn a radical but you only ever see it's variants used.

I mean what the actual fuck?
I thought learning radicals would make it piss easy to learn new kanji cause I instantly see it's parts, but in the end it just confuses me even more.
I mean fuck I don't need to become a radicals master to see 談 is made from 言 and 火 hell I obviously knew that before knowing they are radicals by learning the kanji.

I'm confused as fuck as to why people recommend learning radicals.

It's almost like some combinations of radicals are used so commonly that they're treated like one radical or something.

Complaining about 見 is as retarded as saying why isn't t just considered an l with a line through it?

Variant radicals account for a tiny percentage and they're all super obvious shit like water, fire, and meat, the only thing that might give you any trouble is the last one.
>>
>>149599294
>Jesus Christ how do radicals work and should I even bother with them?
Honestly, probably not. You'd be better off learning them through a kanji course like >>149599313 says.
>>
>>149599294
Most Chinese characters are semanto-phonetic. The primary radical is a semantic indicator that hints at the character's meaning, and the rest of the character suggests the pronunciation, which should be similar to other similar-looking characters.

The effect is somewhat diminished in Japanese due to changes in pronunciation and the fact that it only applies to the on'yomi reading, but it's still there to some extent.

regarding this bit,

日本人がアメリカ人によく聞かれて困る質問の一つに、”How are you?" は日本語で何と言うか、というのがある

I'm guessing the meaning is something along the lines of
"One of the troubling questions that Japanese are asked often by Americans is how to say "How are you" in japanese. "

Is the 何と言うか the same なんというか that's used when you're not sure how to phrase something, like:
A: みきちゃんは、あんたの彼女でしょう?
B: う~ん、彼女というか、友達というか、なんというか・・・

or is it translated as literally "what to say?"

also how would you translate というのがある ?

these phrases aren't on the jisho sentence database so having a hard time with them

It's a negative to study any Japanese, as you're more likely to pick up on all the criticisms your fellow staff and "students" will have of you. As English teachers are glorified babysitters, only employed so the school can say it has a native teacher to prospective students and their parents, it's a negative to employ weebs who actually know some Japanese, as they may want to create actual lesson plans instead of playing meaningless games with the children, while a Japanese native teaches "English" from a textbook.

A few, yes. But pronunciation is their retard of choice.

It's a VERY compact language and the following "je ne sais pas qu'est que ç'est" contains 9 words in 7 apparent syllables, but will mot likely be pronounced with only 4.

Besides that, their vowels are more regular than English, but still a PITA in the ass.

I can already communicate in French through text and even speak clearly, everyone understands me. But my listening comprehension is lower than it is in Japanese, a language in which I'm still unable to communicate whatsoever.

I speak English, Quebec French and Vietnamese (though only English at an academic level, if that makes sense?). English helps for loan words. For Vietnamese, it sometimes coincide with Chinese words which sometimes coincide with Japanese words. So easier to remember a bit of vocabulary, but not much. Knowing multiple languages also helps with understanding since I can see what the word translates to in multiple languages and get a better idea of what it is rather than its definition.

Almost didn't both reading through the thread after seeing the OP.
Decided to ditch the Typhoon ereader ap from Android and use Jade Reader instead. Doesn't handle ebooks or have as nice styling features and Ankidroid integration but isn't giving any errors and is a lot smaller, install wise.
About to start reading. I'll post where I'm up and any comments in a few hours, either at the end of this thread of in the next if this thread dies during that time.
Used Notepad++ to remove the furigana because Jade Reader doesn't strip, which is really annoying when trying to read. This is the html file of the first volume I'm using in Jade Reader.
https://a.uguu.se/iKArfIeqSKDC_%E3%82%AD%E3%83%8E%E3%81%AE%E6%97%85%E3%80%80theBeautifulWorld%E7%AC%AC1%E5%B7%BB.txt
Had to rename it as a text file to upload to uguu. If you want to use it for whatever reason, just rename it to html and it will open in whatever ereader app or browser or whatever just fine.
This is Jade Reader, in case you have no fucking clue what I'm on about:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zyz.mobile&hl=en

As an aside, started reading ご注文はうさぎでか? last night before sleeping and came across a part which I immediately recognised as a question posted some time ago on DJT. Textbooks are all shit apart from DOJG and it was written by Nips, so I wager if it was written by ESLs then maybe, just maybe at least some ESLs will be able to understand it.

As far as Core is concerned, you're better off starting mining immediately (suspending more obscure vocab or rescheduling it to appear after more vital words), but it will be more painful.

Useful software has nothing to do with your language.

Don't worry, my dear, there is nothing wrong with giving up! Not everyone needs to be fit for the job, not everyone has to fulfill unreasonable life-goals in order to prove their value.

Don't you ever let others think little of you. You are special and you are going to find a reason to shine, eventually, just like everyone else. Not every flower blooms in spring, and not every dream is meant to be pursued. Sometimes the romance of it all lies in leaving it behind as a bittersweet "what if", suspended in the air, faintly glittering as a youth thirst you once had.

Everything is going to be fine, darling, you don't need to feel guilty. You don't need to feel anything you don't feel like.

I'm more confused by
>tell to do like this
>>
>cramming core: already know words when you find them while reading
>mine: have to depend on the word showing up a second time so you can finally ready it
I guess it's obvious which one is best.
>>
>>149621730
He obviously knows what it means, but I agree that this one would rather mean
>tell like this
if it followed the pattern and that despite what he writes this one isn't intuitive.
>>
>>149621774
Just schedule the more frequent ones first.

>mine: have to depend on the word showing up a second time so you can finally ready it
You will see almost everything you would learn from Core a lot, so it's not really a problem. The few things that you will see only from time to time are not worth it when just beginning either way.
>>
>>149621633
would this be translated to "swims like becoming a fish?" I don't get よう after a verb.
>>
>>149622030
"In order to"
>>
>>149622024
>Just schedule the more frequent ones first.
Isn't that what the optimized 2k/6k does?
>>
>>149622112
Why not learn the words you actually see when reading? It ups your retention, it's part of language author uses so chances of seeing it again are pretty big (even bigger if you only review common words) and it lets you omit the few words in Core that are useful, but not so much as to be learned in the first few months.
>>
>>149622178
Because core has sound and pictures. Well mostly sound, which helps with pronunciation. Fuck the pictures I guess.
>>
>>149622250
Rikaisama real time import gets you audio (and it's NOT some shitty TTS, but recordings of real people)
>>
>>149622331
Just curious, what type do you use for new cards? Japanese?
>>
>>149622398
>what type do you use for new cards
What do you mean? Whether it's recognition or production card? Then obviously recognition, but it depends whether you want to be able to communicate with other people or just understand manga/anime/LNs/VNs.
>>
just finished memorizing the hiragana alphabet. what should i do before katakana? sharpen my mind to know hiragana 100% without stumbling, learn a few words?
>>
>>149622537
Are you still going to study today?

Grab a few japanese romaji lyrics and write them as hiragana.

When you're somewhat comfortable with your speed, you can start katakana - it will probably be 5 times faster.

Nah I mean this. The type of card. I know it's mostly personal preference though.
>>
>>149622598
That actually sounds fun, will do that, thanks!
>>
>>149622616
What would the name tell you? I just made a new type, called it Rikaisama and made fields for every info Rkaisama lets you import. I don't really use them all on my cards, but I'm just too anal to leave something out.
>>
>>149622537
How long did it take you? I'm currently doing one kana a day; slow I know but I want to make sure I can write them correctly without them looking sloppy.
>>
Quick question: I'm using the anki Kanji Radical deck, and I've noticed a lot of words have a second pronunciation or way to pronounce it that ends in

>へん
>づくり
or
>かんむり

What do these endings signify? What do they mean?
>>
>>149622679
cont there should be a guide for it linked somewhere on the DJT page.
>>
>>149622775
Look it up, even Rikaisama knows about two of them also google is your friend.
>>
>>149622754
>one kana a day
Wow dude by the time you finish kana an amphetineet could have finished Core6k
>>
>>149622948
Also, you don't need the names of radicals unless you are studying the language academically.
>>
>>149622948
I probably should've tried that first.

Sorry for mucking up the thread
>>
>>149622754
I started on Monday and learned the vowels up to the S consenants and then took Tuesday and Wednesday off and finished it all today knowing it all.
>>
>>149622952
True. I'm not a NEET so I have limited time to study Japanese.

Also what's an amphetineet?
>>149622999
Nice numbers. I'll see what I can do. How did you perfect stroke order? Can you write all of the hiragana and compare it to the stroke order you see online?
>>
>>149623087
>I'm not a NEET so I have limited time to study Japanese.
So what at that pace you might as well just not even bother. You will literally NEVER be able to read manga at that pace.
>>
>>149623127
So then what do you suggest?
>>
is there a difference between 去年 and 昨年?
>>
>>149623087
I don't know to be honest. I watched Tae Kim's video and then when it was done playing I went on his Hiragana chart and practiced each character as shown what the stroke order was with what Namasensei recommended doing. I would then just write あいうえお and kept doing it then moved onto the consenants when I felt ready and the next group and the next while still starting from the vowels. Handwritings a bit messy but has improved since Monday. Sorry if I rambled on, I just did what I was told to do
>>
>>149623192
do like, the same thing, but faster
also don't be autistic about writing, its only purpose is receive flattery from nihonjin (which you can do by doing pretty much anything)
>>
>>149622952

>amphetineet

nice one, anon.
>>
>>149623200
One of them makes you sound slightly more pretentious.
>>
>>149623361
which one?
>>
>check CoR for kino no tabi
>only has scans

Are you kidding me? So every time someone mentioned reading it here they were reading a goddamn physical scan?

>>149623397
second is more formal, I think
>>
>>149623515
no there's a text version of it
>>
>>149623200
I've wondered if there is a difference between 昨夜 and 夕べ
>>
>>149623588
where tho
>>
>>149623087
>stroke order
I mean, as long as you know the usual orders of the strokes, you can guess how to write most of them. Anyway, 1 kana a day is really slow. Do them by rows/day. When you feel stable enough with one row, start the next. It's okay to forget 1-2. Start with vowels, then do k+vowels, s+vowels, etc. And I would suggest that even if you aren't familiar with them 100%, start learning grammar and kanji. It pops up so often, that you'll gradually familiarized yourself.
>>
>>149623614
in CoR senpai, why won't you people check the assorted novel packs?

the text on the shirt is great but it feels like you didn't put any effort into the other 2 text at all

maybe the image is just incompatible in the first place
>>
>>149624515
I didn't really want to spend time mapping text to the flag in a way it would still be readable
