There is nothing sympathetic about her. I could really care less about her. If she was replaced with a faceless stand-in called "Final Boss", it would have the same impact as Rinne's backstory does.

I can't even get invested in a show that is seriously trying to tell me "Oh! Feel bad for this poor girl! Fuuka is too good for Rinne. Fuuka, a poor girl who grew up on the streets trying to fight against biker gangs and psychopaths just to scrape enough money by to eat is by FAR the more compelling and reasonable character to be 'saved' this season than poor-little-rich-girl-didn't-get-her-way.

As far as I'm concerned, the season is over. Fuuka got adopted by Harunyan and that's the best ending anyone could ask for. Everything now is just fluffy filler.

They tried to make another Fate, but they messed up royally with the character motivations, the setup, the plot, the action, and even the circumstances in which they meet. She's NOTHING like Fate. She doesn't even deserve to sit on a pedestal that is low enough to look up at Fate and her problems in Season 1 Nanoha.

Fate had every reason to try and make her mother happy, because that was all she knew. Rinne is being a little bitch for no better reason than an extremely flimsy setup of which paints her as either extremely unlikable or a psychopath.

Rinne believes that you need to be strong in order to protect something so even though she does want to cling to Fuuka again like back in the old day, she doesn't believe that Fuuka would be able to protect her or do anything about her problem because she is weaker than her now. Once Fuuka proves her strength to Rinne and makes some gay promise about not leaving her side anymore, etc. Rinne will turn right back to the little crybaby yet happy girl in the past, in front of Fuuka at least. Her communication disorder and the inability to control her strength properly would probably need some more time to fix, though.
